Eleni's Pov

I was confused. Dead? How? He had left to go job hunting that morning because the Makris brothers had fired him after he had retuned the money. I had urged him to find something that won’t involve working with criminals.

The cop told me dad had taken his own life by jumping off a bridge. His motorcycle had been found near the bridge with his suicide note on the seat.

I burst into tears. Nick heard the commotion and came into the living room. He too began crying when he heard the news. I couldn’t believe it. Why would dad do something so selfish? Mom may have been mad at him, but Nick and I loved him. Despite his gambling he was a good father. Days ago I had told him of my plans to open a bakery and make enough to make our lives easier, so why couldn’t he have waited?

I found out the answer days later. I came home after a long day of baking pastries for a wedding, to see mom and Nick trembling with fear in the living room. A stocky dark haired man, with mean grey eyes sat across them. Some men I guessed were bodyguards stood in a corner. The man looked at me as I came in and leered as his eyes rested on my hips. I knew immediately this was going to be bad.

“Leni this is Alexios Makris.” Mom said. I could hear the fear her voice. “Sit down he has something to tell us.”

Cold with fear I sat down beside her.

“Hello Leni, I am here to recover the money your dumb dead son of a bitch dad owed us.” He said.

I wasn’t happy to hear him insult my dad but I was too scared to show it.

“What? But he paid you back the $3000, didn’t he?” I asked confused.

“It wasn’t $3000! The bastard lied to us.” Mom fumed. “It was $100,000 he stole and lost gambling.”

I was glad I had taken her advice to sit down, if not I would have collapse from shock. $100,000! What the hell Dad!

"After he stole the money, he asked us to give him time to pay it back. We gave him two days. Then the next day he somehow managed to get $3000 which he used to gamble, and lost again. The next we heard the bastard had killed himself. We want our money back and we want it now! Or you guys are going to recive all the delicious torture we had planned to give the asshole.” He warned.

We all swallowed fearfully. We had heard how brutal the Makris brothers could be.

“You will get half of it on Saturday. Two months time you will get the rest.” I said quickly.

He looked suspicious. “Your loser dad said the same thing, why should I believe you?”

“Because I’m not my dad. On Saturday I will bring the money to your office.” I promised.

"You better, or else we will take our payment in kind!" He licked his lips and grinned evilly.

"You will get your money!" I said firmly.

Mom looked at me as if I was insane. As soon as they left she exploded.

“Are you crazy? How can you make such a reckless promise! Where are you going to get $50,000?”

“From the money I saved for my bakery.”

“If you have saved so much then we should use it to flee town.”

“No mom. Running away isn’t the answer. If we leave they will consider it an insult. They will do everything to find us and teach us a lesson. We will stay and pay them back, then we’ll be free.”

“Stop talking like an idiot!” She snapped. “If we go far away the will never find us.”

“The Makris are rich and powerful. They will, and it will be worse. My way is better.” I said gently.

Nick who was watching us, spoke up. “Leni is right Mom. We can’t make Dad’s mistake. We should stay.”

I saw my mom’s eyes darken then she shrugged.

“Fine. Let’s go and count it to make sure it’s correct I don’t want any nasty surprises.” She said.

We went to my room and I brought out the money for under my mattrass. We counted it together.

“$50,000 exactly. When I give it to them on Saturday it will buy us time.” I said.

“Sure. On Saturday evening when you get back from work, we will go and see the Makris brothers together.”

“Things may get a little difficult for us, but don’t worry Mom. Once we pay off the debt we will start afresh. We will be okay.”

She forced a smile and I had the uneasy feeling she was up to something, and she was.

On Saturday evening I came back disappointed. The anniversary party I was supposed to make cakes for had been cancelled so they hadn’t needed my services. But my disappointment turned to shock when I entered the living room and found it empty.

What had happened? Had the Makris brothers been here and kidnapped my family and our furniture? I looked at my watch. I wasn't late, I still had an hour before I went to see them so that couldn't be it. I called out for mom and Nick but everywhere was quiet. I rushed into Nick's room. It was empty, so was my mom’s. Then something hit me. Trembling, I went to my bedroom and raised the mattress, then gasped in horror.

My $50,000 was gone.

Eleni stared at the gun open mouthed. Once again a weapon was in her face. That seemed to be a common occurrence ever since she had met the Romano’s. “You are coming with me!” The man snapped. Panicking her eyes quickly scanned the room, looking for a weapon she could use to defend herself, but there wasn’t anything. “Now!” He snapped. “Please let me go. I will leave town and not come back.” She said frantically. “Move!” He barked shoving her towards the back door. The cold air hit her as she stepped outside, and she shivered from the cold and fear. She didn’t know where the man was taking her, but guessed wherever it was Mia would be waiting. She looked at the guard house, there was no sign of the guards. Where were they now she needed them? As they walked further away from the house she looked round hoping to find a weapon. Her eyes caught a large log of wood on the ground. “Who are you working for?” She asked trying to distract him. “Be quiet and move!” She stumbl

Leonardo’s heart nearly stopped. The footsteps were getting closer. Was it a maid? Guard? Or had Niccolo come home unexpectedly? Whoever it was they couldn’t find him here. But the information he needed was almost up, of he shut it down he won't lose everything. He made a decision. He shut the laptop and looked round for a place to hide. Behind the bookcase at the end of the room was perfect. He slid behind it just as the door opened. He heard the person come in, walk around then stop. From his position he couldn’t see who it was, and didn't dare peek. The sounds stopped. Everything was quiet for a long time, then the footsteps sounded again and he heard the door opened and close. He let out a sigh of relief as he came out his hiding place. He needed to hurry up and get the hell out of this place. He walked to the computer and stopped suddenly. It was open and the browsing history had been wiped out. Fuck! * Eleni’s again looked out of the cabin windows. No sign of any guard. Sh

Helena wasn’t surprised to see Julia at her house the next afternoon, but she was surprised by how angry she looked. “Helena what have you done?” Julia demanded.. “I was helping you solve our problem,.” Helena said calmly. “I had already solved it! The girl was leaving with the money I gave her. Then you had to ruin everything.” “I’m sorry. It was the fools I sent. They messed up.” “What was the point of having her kidnapped?” Julia demanded. “To make sure she was gone for good.” “Well she isn’t! And now Niccolo knows what you’ve done. He is angrier than ever with Mia. You have ruined everything.” “And I will fix it. We will try again.” “How? I don’t even know where she is.” “What do you mean? I thought you said she didn’t leave.” “She didn’t. Niccolo rescued her, now he is hiding her somewhere and I don’t know where.” “Then find her. Or make Nick forget her.” “I am trying.” “Try harder! Nick must get back with Mia, and soon!” “He would never have broken

  • My Protector   Hidden Feelings

Julia paced the living room anxiously, occasionally glancing at the wall clock. Alora and Jane had been gone for nearly two hours and she didn’t know if Jane had managed to escape or not. She had tried calling Alora to indirectly find out what was going on, but she wasn’t picking up. Jane must have escaped, she told herself. She has enough money and Alora is careless so it would be easy for her to slip away, especially since no guards are with them. But what if she hasn't? How would she explain it to Helena? Then she heard Alora's car pull into the driveway, and held her breadth as Alora rushed into the living room. “Aunt Julia you are here? Where is Nick?” She asked breathlessly. “At work of course. What is it?” “No he isn’t there. I’m just coming from his office. I need to know where he is!” “Calm down, what is it that’s so important?” “Jane is missing! I think she has been kidnapped! We have to find her.” Julia let out a quiet sigh of relief. So the stupid girl d

“Please let me go!I didn’t escape I’m with Alora!” I tried to explain. “Shut up!” One growled. I stopped struggling. I knew Nick must have told them to take me back to the mansion. The jerk couldn’t even wait for me to come back, he had to kidnap me. I thought furiously. Then one of men said, “Call miss Conti. Tell her we have the girl and are on our way.” Eleni froze. Mia! Mia was the one who had kidnapped her? This wasn’t good. She began to struggle desperately. “Stay still!” The man yelled holding her tightly. She began wishing she had listened to Nick and stayed at home, but how was she to know Mia would go this far. Then she heard a load bang that shook the whole car. It skidded off the road and crashed on to the sidewalk. She moaned softly. Now what? She thought as the door opened and she was pulled out. She saw another car had run into theirs and badly damaged it. Niccolo got out of the car and ran towards her, while his men pulled her kidnappers from the wrecke

Eleni's Pov Don’t bother getting up.” Julia snapped sitting beside me. “I didn’t know you were around.” I stammered nervously, guessing she was here for trouble. Julia looked at me coldly. “Everything was going well in this house until you came here. Niccolo and Mia were in love and ready to get married, now he hates her and it’s all your fault!" “I’m sorry I never meant to cause trouble. I just came here to get a job. I never wanted any of this, it was all Nick’s idea.” “That’s a lie!” “It’s true. I swear. I would have left long ago but he won’t let me.” “You expect me to believe Nick is keeping you here?” She asked scornfully. “He is. Honestly-“ “Prove it then.” I looked confused. “How?” I asked, wondering what drama I was about to be dragged into now. Julia pulled out an envelope from her pocket and threw it at me “This is a check for a million dollars. If you really want to leave then take it. Leave town and leave my family alone.” “The guard won’t let me-“
