Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
I begged Nicole not to treat this as a joke.

She always promised she wouldn't, only to start pushing things even further after some time had passed.

Now she'd even tagged me directly in the group chat.

[Kenneth, I've decided to bring Chris home and let him sleep in our master bedroom. You won't get mad, will you?]

The group chat immediately flooded with messages.

[Nicole, you're really taking this too far. He's definitely going to get angry!]

[Whoa, whoa, whoa! Start recording. I can't wait to see Kenneth lose it.]

Nicole was eagerly waiting for me to blow up.

She even started a bet, wagering that I'd lose my temper within twenty-four hours.

Everyone else joined in.

[I bet he won't even last a minute.]

[That's too soon. I say two hours.]

The group chat was filled with gleeful messages.

They were all treating my emotions like entertainment.

The person leading the whole game was the woman who had once promised at our wedding that she'd spend the rest of her life by my side.

"Kenneth, no matter what happens in the future, I'll always be by your side, take care of you, and never leave you."

Looking back now, it only felt ridiculous.

I immediately opened the group chat settings and chose to leave the group.

Nicole noticed right away and messaged me.

[Kenneth, are you angry?]

[No!]

[Don't lie. If you aren't angry, why are you threatening me with divorce? You're pretty good at pretending. I want to see how long you can keep it up.]

She didn't know that I wasn't threatening her.

I was serious about the divorce.

My parents were furious.

I spent a long time calming them down and told them I would divorce Nicole and cut ties with her. Only then did they finally feel at ease.

I didn't go back to the home I shared with Nicole that night.

I stayed out all night.

Nicole didn't message me. Instead, I got a call from my mother-in-law, Meredith Stormer.

"Kenneth, I'm really sorry about what happened yesterday. I've had the chef prepare a big meal at your place today. Bring your parents over. We should properly apologize to your family."

I didn't want to go back at first, but they were my in-laws, and refusing would've been rude. Besides, there were some things I needed to make clear.

I didn't plan on bringing my parents. Their health wasn't great, and this was my problem to deal with.

When I returned to that house, everything had changed.

Chris was the one who opened the door.

My shoes had been thrown away and replaced with a new pair of matching couple's shoes that belonged to Nicole and Chris.

The wedding photo that had been hung in the middle of the living room was gone too. In its place were sweet pictures of Nicole and Chris from when they were dating.

Even my personal mug on the table had disappeared. It was replaced by a brand-new pair of matching mugs.

Every trace of me in that house seemed to have been erased overnight.

It was as if all the happy memories I'd shared with her had been nothing but an illusion.

This had become Nicole and Chris' home.

When Meredith saw me, she pretended to complain. "Kenneth, Nicole's just too spoiled. She loves joking around. Don't take her too seriously."

Nicole's father, Felix Stormer, sat on the couch while watching the news. He seemed completely unconcerned. "Don't youngsters like playing games these days? You have to know how to take a joke and let it go. That's what makes a real man."

That was easy for him to say.

If Meredith were acting this way with another man, would he still be saying the same thing?

Since he was my father-in-law, I didn't argue with him.

Meredith smiled. "All right, enough about that. Everyone's here, so I'll get ready to serve dinner."

One dish after another was brought to the table. I took one look and realized every single dish was something I hated.

Meredith might be showing a polite attitude, but I knew she and Felix had always looked down on me. They believed my family wasn't good enough for Nicole.

Whenever we ate together, they deliberately ordered food I didn't like.

Back then, whenever Nicole noticed, she'd stand up to her parents and defend me.

Chris said my dad is sick. I need to go back. Wait for me. Once I return, I'll continue making it up to you."Nicole rushed home. But when she arrived, she saw Felix sitting at the table leisurely sipping a drink.Chris was in the kitchen helping Meredith clean the vegetables.Nicole flew into a rage. "Chris, what the hell is going on?"Chris stammered and couldn't answer. Felix coldly explained on his behalf. "Enough. Don't blame him. This was my idea. If I hadn't lied to you and brought you back, you would've kept following Kenneth around without caring about your company or your own family."Meredith also tried to reason with her. "Let me give you some advice. Just let Kenneth go. You can't force a relationshi

"You were the one who confidently said Kenneth would only get a little angry. You said there was no way he'd leave you, and no matter how angry you made him, all you had to do was apologize and play the victim, and he'd forgive you.""All of this was your idea, and now you're blaming us? We only encouraged you from the sidelines. You were the one who caused all the hurt.""You were the one who went on dates with Chris and deliberately sent him messages.""You and Chris were the ones who accused Kenneth of being the other man at the company. That was what drove him away.""Every single one of these things was your fault. Don't blame us!"Nicole buried her head under the blanket. She was overwhelmed by grief."Get out! All of you, get out!""Nicole–" Chris said cautiously."You too! Get out! All of you, get out! I don't want to see any of you. Not one of you!"Nicole lifted her head and began throwing everything within reach at them. Her friends cursed as they hurried out.Eve

I pushed Nicole out the door by force.I then slammed the door shut.Nicole leaned against the door. Tears streamed down her cheeks and into her mouth. They tasted bitter with hints of regret."Kenneth, don't you love me?"I didn't answer.I had loved her.We had been together. We'd gotten married. All of that had been proof that I loved her, but even the deepest love couldn't withstand endless tests or her never-ending lies.Thunder rumbled overhead.Dark clouds covered the sky, mirroring Nicole's mood.Nicole lingered outside my door for a long time. She stared at the torrential rain outside and suddenly seemed to make up her mind. She took the elevator downstairs. She then stood where she could be seen from my window. She refused to use an umbrella as the rain poured down on her.The downpour soaked her within seconds.Rain mixed with her tears streamed down her face until she could barely keep her eyes open. Her friends started shouting."Nicole, stop standing out

I was constantly dealing with Nicole's unreasonable behavior. She made me lose my temper repeatedly, and it gradually took a toll on my health. There was always a heavy knot of frustration in my chest. It wasn't until after I divorced her that the pressure finally lifted, and I felt much more at ease.Maybe marriage wasn't the problem. Maybe I had simply chosen the wrong person to marry.I shook my head while mentally preparing to banish that wretched woman from my mind. Then I heard her voice at the door."Mrs. Carlson, Mr. Carlson, is Kenneth home? I need to talk to him."A group of her friends stood behind her, but none of them said a word. The moment Mom saw Nicole, her expression darkened.Dad, who was sitting on the couch, waved his cane to make her leave. "Kenneth is already divorced from you. Don't come here anymore. We're not your in-laws!"Nicole stood awkwardly at the doorway.Despite seeing how Mom had no intention of letting her in, she still shamelessly squeez

"Divorce certificate?"The moment Nicole saw the divorce certificate inside the envelope, she stood there completely stunned. Her friends were equally dumbfounded. They couldn't believe what they were seeing."That has to be a fake divorce certificate, right?" one of them muttered under their breath.Nicole's face had already gone pale. "No. This can't be real. How could Kenneth possibly divorce me? We love each other so much. How could he ever bring himself to leave me? There's no way!"Seeing how Nicole looked completely lost, her friends suddenly felt uncomfortable and quickly reassured her."Maybe the divorce certificate is fake. Maybe this is just another one of his tricks to make you chase after him.""Exactly. We've been messing with him all this time. Maybe he's decided to turn the tables and mess with you instead.""Don't fall for it. Otherwise, you'll be the one at a disadvantage in your marriage."Her friends kept trying to convince her, but Nicole couldn't hear a w
