Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
"Whatever you think of Kenneth, he's my husband. He's the man I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. If you treat him like this again, I won't come home," Nicole had said.

I was always the one who talked her out of arguing with her parents.

Those were all dishes I didn't eat anyway. I'd just eat a little less and grab something for supper afterward.

But today, the food was still the same food I hated, and the deliberate exclusion was still just as obvious. Yet Nicole didn't say a word.

Meanwhile, when it came to dishes Chris didn't like, Nicole only had to mention it once, and that dish never appeared on the table again.

Nicole even thoughtfully put food on Chris's plate. "This is your favorite. Mom made it especially for you."

Chris took a bite of the eggplant and smiled. "Thanks, Meredith. After all these years, I still miss your cooking the most."

Meredith beamed as she reminisced about the past when they were little.

Chris even addressed Nicole's parents on a first-name basis.

Nicole laughed so hard beside them that her stomach hurt. She would chime in from time to time.

They looked more like a family than I ever had with them. On the other hand, I looked like a stranger who had wandered in for a free meal.

Last year, Chris had come over for dinner too.

Back then, Nicole would still hold my hand and make sure I was part of the conversation.

But now, she only gave me a regretful look and murmured, "Chris really does understand me better than you do."

Felix was drunk by then. He slammed his hand on the table. Remorse was written all over his face.

"I never should've stopped you two from dating when you were younger. Because of me, you missed your chance. I regret keeping you two apart. Now you're in an unhappy marriage."

Nicole lowered her head and silently continued eating.

Everyone was ignoring me. At that moment, I couldn't stomach another bite.

"You two don't have to wait any longer. Once the divorce is complete, you two can finally be together," I said.

Meredith hurried after me when I got up to leave. "They're all just joking around. Don't take them seriously. It's rare for the whole family to get together. Don't ruin the mood."

Alcohol had loosened their tongues, but I knew they meant every word, and I meant what I'd said too.

"No. You are all part of a family, and I'm not in it."

I returned to my bedroom and started packing my things.

The clothes in my wardrobe were already gone.

Fortunately, I'd hidden my important documents deep inside the cabinet. Not a single one was missing.

Nicole blocked the doorway. She looked anxious. "Are you really going to divorce me?"

"Of course."

"I don't believe you. You're just angry. You're only saying this because you're upset."

I calmly replied, "I'm not angry."

Nicole's eyes went wide in fury. "Then leave! And don't ever come back!"

I walked out without looking back.

Just as she pointed out, I had no intention of returning.

When I arrived at my parents' house with my belongings, they asked what I planned to do.

As I packed my things, I told them, "I have an old classmate who runs a startup. He's asked me to go work with him. I'm planning to resign from Nicole's company."

In the past, my parents would've told me that married couples should work and live together, and that this was what a real family looked like.

But after what they'd witnessed from Nicole the last time, they never said things like that again.

Seeing that I'd finally decided to move on, they supported me completely.

"That's good, Kenneth. I support you. Once you've settled down, your dad and I will come live with you.

"Don't think too much about it. Wherever your family is, that's home."

I tried to hold it together, but my eyes still welled with tears.

"Okay. Once I've sorted things out, I'll bring you both over."

With my parents' approval, my heart didn't feel so empty anymore. I finally had the strength to move forward.

The next morning, I went to the office as usual.

I returned to my desk and was just about to submit my resignation when I noticed that something about the atmosphere in the office was odd.

Everyone was whispering and gossiping.

Their gazes kept drifting toward me.

Whenever I looked up, they immediately looked away.

Just from that alone, I knew they were probably talking behind my back.

Nicole didn't care whether we accepted any of the things she brought. She simply forced them into our hands. When I took my parents on vacation, she shamelessly insisted on coming along. But on the way there, she received a phone call and anxiously told me, "I'm sorry. Chris said my dad is sick. I need to go back. Wait for me. Once I return, I'll continue making it up to you."Nicole rushed home. But when she arrived, she saw Felix sitting at the table leisurely sipping a drink.Chris was in the kitchen helping Meredith clean the vegetables.Nicole flew into a rage. "Chris, what the hell is going on?"Chris stammered and couldn't answer. Felix coldly explained on his behalf. "Enough. Don't blame him. This was my idea. If I hadn't lied to you and brought you back, you would've kept following Kenneth around without caring about your company or your own family."Meredith also tried to reason with her. "Let me give you some advice. Just let Kenneth go. You can't force a relationshi

"You were the one who confidently said Kenneth would only get a little angry. You said there was no way he'd leave you, and no matter how angry you made him, all you had to do was apologize and play the victim, and he'd forgive you.""All of this was your idea, and now you're blaming us? We only encouraged you from the sidelines. You were the one who caused all the hurt.""You were the one who went on dates with Chris and deliberately sent him messages.""You and Chris were the ones who accused Kenneth of being the other man at the company. That was what drove him away.""Every single one of these things was your fault. Don't blame us!"Nicole buried her head under the blanket. She was overwhelmed by grief."Get out! All of you, get out!""Nicole–" Chris said cautiously."You too! Get out! All of you, get out! I don't want to see any of you. Not one of you!"Nicole lifted her head and began throwing everything within reach at them. Her friends cursed as they hurried out.Eve

I pushed Nicole out the door by force.I then slammed the door shut.Nicole leaned against the door. Tears streamed down her cheeks and into her mouth. They tasted bitter with hints of regret."Kenneth, don't you love me?"I didn't answer.I had loved her.We had been together. We'd gotten married. All of that had been proof that I loved her, but even the deepest love couldn't withstand endless tests or her never-ending lies.Thunder rumbled overhead.Dark clouds covered the sky, mirroring Nicole's mood.Nicole lingered outside my door for a long time. She stared at the torrential rain outside and suddenly seemed to make up her mind. She took the elevator downstairs. She then stood where she could be seen from my window. She refused to use an umbrella as the rain poured down on her.The downpour soaked her within seconds.Rain mixed with her tears streamed down her face until she could barely keep her eyes open. Her friends started shouting."Nicole, stop standing out

Maybe I had simply chosen the wrong person to marry.I shook my head while mentally preparing to banish that wretched woman from my mind. Then I heard her voice at the door."Mrs. Carlson, Mr. Carlson, is Kenneth home? I need to talk to him."A group of her friends stood behind her, but none of them said a word. The moment Mom saw Nicole, her expression darkened.Dad, who was sitting on the couch, waved his cane to make her leave. "Kenneth is already divorced from you. Don't come here anymore. We're not your in-laws!"Nicole stood awkwardly at the doorway.Despite seeing how Mom had no intention of letting her in, she still shamelessly squeez

"Divorce certificate?"The moment Nicole saw the divorce certificate inside the envelope, she stood there completely stunned. Her friends were equally dumbfounded. They couldn't believe what they were seeing."That has to be a fake divorce certificate, right?" one of them muttered under their breath.Nicole's face had already gone pale. "No. This can't be real. How could Kenneth possibly divorce me? We love each other so much. How could he ever bring himself to leave me? There's no way!"Seeing how Nicole looked completely lost, her friends suddenly felt uncomfortable and quickly reassured her."Maybe the divorce certificate is fake. Maybe this is just another one of his tricks to make you chase after him.""Exactly. We've been messing with him all this time. Maybe he's decided to turn the tables and mess with you instead.""Don't fall for it. Otherwise, you'll be the one at a disadvantage in your marriage."Her friends kept trying to convince her, but Nicole couldn't hear a w
