Sera

I pushed the heavy oak door open and marched into the room. Mina was right behind me, her boots clicking on the stone like a countdown. She didn't stop talking the second we crossed the threshold.

"What happened? Why did you leave? Was the turkey cold? I saw you stop eating. Did someone say something to you?" The questions came at me in a barrage, one after another, giving me no room to breathe.

I didn't answer. I didn't even look at her. I walked straight to the bed and let my body go lim

Mina"It's complicated.""It's not, though." He said it gently. He always said the pushing things gently. "It's the simplest thing in the world. I'm not a man who hides. I don't like the hiding. You're not a thing I'm ashamed of, Mina, you're the opposite of that, and I'm tired of the only place I get to have you being a cold lodge two hours' walk from the people who matter to you."The people who matter to you. He'd put it right next to the thing I'd been bleeding about all night, the people who don't see me, the people who count me least, and now here he was, the one who saw me, the one who counted me, and he wanted to stand in the same room as the people who didn't, and let them see that someone did. When he said it like that I couldn't find the edge of the no. The no had been so clear an hour ago and now it was somewhere under all the warmth and I couldn't put my hand on it."You want to meet Fenris," I said."I want to meet your brother." A correction so soft it didn't feel like

MinaHe was quiet. His chin came down to rest on the top of my head, careful of the shoulder, his breath going slow in my hair. I let myself sink into it. The comfort was real even if the cause was made of nothing."They don't see you," he said. "That's their failure. Not yours.""I know.""You've spent your whole life in rooms where you do the most and you're counted the least." His hand moved on the shoulder, slow circles now, past the working part into something that was only tenderness. "You are young, and already carrying people who'd never once carried you.""You don't know that.""I knew it by your face." A small sound, almost a laugh, cut short before it got going, the same clip he always put on it. "Took me about a minute. A child shouldn't have a face that tired."My mouth tugged toward the wall, where he couldn't see it. My face had been clenched for hours and it hurt to let it go."She's not worth your shoulder," he said. Bringing it back around. "Whoever she is. A woman w

Mina"What's her name?"There it was. The first place the lie could break open. He wanted a name. Men want a name once they've decided to do something about a person. But the name was the one thing I couldn't give him. Say Sera and he'd have all of it: that the jealous scullery maid I'd built was the Luna of this pack, the Alpha's mate, my brother's wife. I'd spent every day since he got here keeping him away from those people. I wasn't taking the wall down over a sore shoulder."It doesn't matter.""It matters to me.""Jace." I turned my head. He was right there, closer than I'd thought, his jaw a few inches off mine, and his eyes weren't soft, they had that flat thing in them again, the take-a-look-at-you thing. "Leave it. I mean it. You go making noise about some kitchen woman and it gets back around and it's me who has to live in that keep with all of them, not you. You don't have to wake up in there. I do."He held my eyes for a second. The fingers kept moving the whole time, gen

MinaI came back with the door shut behind me before I'd worked out what my face was doing. The sack of foodstuff hit the floor by the entry harder than I meant. A turnip rolled out of the top of it and went under the bench and I let it go. My other hand had the bundle of clean clothes pressed up against my chest, against the side that didn't hurt, because the side that did hurt had been screaming at me the whole walk back and I'd been holding the bundle on the good side without deciding to.Jace was at the low table with a cup in front of him and a flat wooden box open beside it, some human thing he tinkered with when he was bored, small metal pieces laid out in a row. He raised his eyes when the door went. Then he held them on me a second longer than a man holds them on someone who's only been gone two hours."That was quick.""They didn't have the salted kind. I got the other." I kept my eyes off him while I said it.He didn't say anything to that. He set the cup down. He had a way

Sera"You've got enough of your own to be going on with."Her eyes dropped. To my middle, to the flat of my stomach under the wool, and held there a beat, and came back up to my face."You've got a bigger problem than me."And there it was. The reason I'd come. It came up the back of my throat all at once, and the look on her face, that flat, knowing drop of her eyes to my belly and back, landed on me as something close to a smirk, like she was enjoying the size of the hole I was standing in.I crossed the floor and grabbed her by the sleeve before I'd decided to move."Why would you do it?" Both hands fisted in her sleeve, and I don't fully remember taking hold of her. "I told you. I came in here and I told you. I put it in your hands, and you went straight to him with it. Why."She leaned back from me, frowning, off-balance with my grip pulling her."I don't understand. Sera, I don't know what you're talking about.""The girls saw you." My voice was climbing and I couldn't get under

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    293 Enough Of Your Own

SeraI'd been standing outside Mina's door long enough that my feet had gone cold through the slippers, and the room behind it was as dead and dark as it had been the night before.I'd knocked. Twice, soft, then once with the side of my fist, and nothing came back. The hearth-light didn't move under the door the way it would if a fire were lit. I'd put my palm flat to the wood and listened the way I'd taught myself to listen in this place, for a heartbeat, for breath, for the shift of a body on a mattress, and there was none of it. She wasn't in there. She hadn't been in there all night. I'd lain awake in my own bed turning it over until the turning wore a groove, and the groove only ever ran to one place, which was that Mina had gone down those stairs in a coat and taken my secret to my husband, and that was why Fenris had looked at me the way he'd looked at me and then walked out and not come back.I put my forehead against her door for a second. Then I pushed off it. There was no p

LyraShe ignored me. She dropped to her knees, her hands sliding down to the waistband of my trousers. She shoved her fingers inside the fabric, gripping my hips tight. With one sharp pull, she dragged the pants and my underwear down to my ankles. I stepped out of them, kicking my boots off in the

Lyra"Tell the girl to step into the room," he said."Leave her out of this," I said. My voice came out as a pathetic, raspy whisper. I cleared my throat, trying to find some spine. "She didn't do anything. It was my idea to come in here.""Tell her to step into the room," he said, his eyes going d

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
