Chapter 1 — The Midnight Oath

~ Nora Vane POV ~

"Shift the security details on the northern gate by twenty minutes," I told the head guard, adjusting the tablet in my hands as we walked down the grand corridor of the Crestfall Pack house. "If Alpha Silas sees a five-minute gap during the moonfall transition, he’ll have your rank stripped before dawn."

The guard nodded quickly, scanning the updated schedule on his own screen. "Thank you, Nora. We’d be lost without you tonight."

"Just make sure the perimeter stays quiet," I said, offering a faint smile before turning toward the main hall.

Every surface of the pack house gleamed. She-wolves dressed in silk shifted chairs, arranged silver moon-orchids, and hung crimson banners for the Blood Moon ceremony. It was the most sacred event of the decade. Tonight, the Alpha’s heir, Caleb Hayes, would step into his true power, and the pack fully expected him to choose his Luna.

Everyone knew who that Luna was supposed to be.

"Nora!" a sharp, aristocratic voice called out across the marble foyer.

I stopped, taking a quiet breath before turning to face my adoptive mother, Evelyn Vane. Beside her stood Beatrice, my sister, looking flawless in an emerald velvet gown that highlighted her pale skin and dark hair.

"There you are," Evelyn said, her eyes narrowing as she swept toward me. "Why are the floral arrangements near the dais missing the crest ribbons? Beatrice specifically designed that layout, and you’re falling behind on execution."

I kept my voice calm and even. "The ribbons are being pressed, mother. They'll be on the dais in ten minutes."

"See that they are," Evelyn replied coldly. She reached out, adjusting the silver brooch on Beatrice’s collar with delicate, loving care. "Beatrice worked tirelessly on the logistics for tonight's gathering. It takes a true Alpha female to coordinate an event of this scale without breaking a sweat."

Several nearby pack elders murmured in agreement, glancing admiringly at Beatrice. Beatrice offered a modest, practiced smile, letting her mother take all the credit for the three hundred security passes, dietary rosters, and seating charts I had spent the last two weeks building from scratch.

"Mother, please," Beatrice said softly, her tone dripping with sweet humility. "Nora helped carry the boxes from the archives. We shouldn't discount her small contributions just because she lacks a wolf."

A few subtle giggles echoed from the she-wolves nearby.

I didn't blink, I didn't argue. I had spent eighteen years learning that defending myself against Evelyn and Beatrice only brought harsher punishments. Instead, I pressed my fingers against the thin fabric of my skirt, feeling the outline of the key tucked safely in my pocket.

Beneath the loose floorboard under my bed upstairs sat two hidden items: a university acceptance letter from a institution three states away, and a single-way flight ticket departing tomorrow at noon.

Let Beatrice have the credit. Let her have the pack, the politics, and the title. In less than twenty-four hours, I would finally be free.

"If you don't need anything else," I said quietly, "I'll check on the archive documents for the ceremony speeches."

"Go," Evelyn dismissed me with a light wave of her hand, not even looking up as she smoothed Beatrice's hair. "Try to stay out of the sight of the visiting Alphas. We don't need guests asking why a human is managing pack affairs."

I turned on my heel and walked away, keeping my chin lifted until I turned the corner into the quiet wing leading to the pack archives.

The lower archives were cool, silent, and lined with dusty shelves holding centuries of Crestfall history. I stepped inside, letting the oak door click shut behind me. The relief was immediate. I walked toward the central desk, setting my tablet down next to a pile of ledger folders.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the printed flight itinerary, and laid it on the desk just to look at it. Departure: 12:15 PM. It felt like a lifeline.

"You're late with the speech transcripts," a deep voice spoke from the shadows behind the bookcases.

I quickly slammed a file folder over the flight ticket as Caleb stepped into the warm glow of the desk lamp.

He looked striking in his formal Alpha jacket, the silver crest of Crestfall embroidered across his chest. At twenty-one, Caleb Hayes was built like a tempest—broad shoulders, sharp jawline, and storm-grey eyes that always seemed to look right through me. But right now, those eyes held a strange, restless exhaustion.

"Caleb," I breathed, taking a small step back. "What are you doing down here? Your father is looking for you upstairs. The ceremony starts in less than an hour."

"My father is currently explaining to six regional Alpha allies why my betrothal to Beatrice is the smartest political move of the century," Caleb said, his voice. He walked toward the desk, pulling off his black gloves. "I needed ten minutes without someone telling me who I'm supposed to spend the rest of my life with."

"Beatrice will make a capable Luna," I said carefully, keeping my expression neutral. "She knows the pack lineages, and her family has the council's support."

Caleb stopped at the end of the desk. His gaze dropped to my face, intense and unreadable. "Is that what you think? You think I should marry Beatrice?"

"It isn't my place to have an opinion on your mate, Caleb. I'm just the administrator." I said.

"Stop doing that," he snapped, a flash of frustration crossing his face. "Stop speaking to me like you're an employee. We grew up together, Nora."

"And then we grew up," I reminded him softly. "You became the future Alpha, and I remained the wolfless ward your family took in out of charity."

Caleb stared at me, his jaw clenching. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the folder I had hastily thrown over the desk. Before I could stop him, he lifted the paper.

The printed flight confirmation lay exposed on the table.

Caleb picked it up. His eyes scanned the document, his body going unnaturally still. The quiet in the room suddenly felt stretched thin.

"What is this?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave.

"It's nothing," I said, reaching out to take it back. "Give it to me, Caleb."

He lifted the paper out of my reach, his storm-grey eyes darkening as he stared at the dates. "Chicago? A flight to Chicago tomorrow afternoon? Nora, what is this?"

"It's my life," I answered, stepping back and holding his glare. "I got into the Chicago program, Caleb. I'm leaving tomorrow."

"You're leaving?" Caleb repeated, the words coming out incredulous, almost harsh. "Without telling anyone? Without telling me?"

"Why would I tell you?" I asked, my voice wavering slightly before I forced it back into steady control. "So you could talk me out of it? So Evelyn could tell me I'm ungrateful for wanting a life outside this territory? I don't belong here, Caleb. I don't have a wolf. I'm eighteen years old, and I spend my days organizing dinner parties for people who look at me like I'm dirt on their shoes."

Caleb took a swift step around the desk, closing the distance between us until he stood in front of me. The heat radiating off him was overwhelming.

"You belong here because I want you here," he said, his voice laced with a dark, possessive steel that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "You manage this entire pack, Nora. Silas knows it, Evelyn knows it, and I damn well know it. You think you can just pack a bag and disappear to some human city?"

"I want a normal life!" I insisted, pressing my back against the edge of the archive table. "I want to go somewhere where my lack of a wolf doesn't make me a second-class citizen. I want to build something of my own!"

"And what about us?" he demanded, leaning closer, his hand coming down on the desk beside my hip. "You just walk away from me?"

My breath hitched. "There is no us, Caleb. You are about to take the Alpha mark tonight. You are going to take Beatrice as your Luna. You have a pack to lead, and I have a life to live. Let me go."

Caleb stared down at me, his breathing heavy, his dark eyes locked onto my lips. For a terrifying, beautiful second, I thought he was going to lean down and kiss me. The tension between us felt like a wire stretched to its absolute breaking point.

"I won't let you leave," Caleb whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Try to step on that plane tomorrow, Nora. See how fast I bring you back."

Before I could answer, the sanctuary bells chimed across the estate, echoing down into the basement. Three vibrating strikes.

The ceremony was beginning.

Caleb held my gaze for one long, suffocating moment, then turned and walked out of the archives without another word, leaving the flight ticket crumpled in his fist.

The Moonstone Sanctuary was packed with hundreds of wolves. Torchfire flickered against the ancient stone walls, throwing jagged shadows over the crowded rows of pack members and visiting dignitaries.

I stood far off to the side, near the dark pillars at the back of the chamber, holding my clipboards close to my chest. My heart was still hammering against my ribs from my confrontation with Caleb.

Up on the raised dais, Alpha Silas stood dressed in ceremonial black robes, his graying wolf eyes scanning the crowd with cold authority. Beside him, Evelyn and her husband stood proudly, watching as Beatrice glided up the steps in her emerald dress, positioning herself right at the altar where the Luna mantle would be conferred.

Then Caleb walked out onto the dais.

A collective hush washed over the crowd. The moonlight streamed through the open glass dome above, hitting Caleb as midnight struck.

A low, resonant hum echoed through the floorboards. The Blood Moon reached its peak, glowing a deep, vivid crimson in the sky above.

I saw Caleb stiffen. His chest heaved as his Alpha wolf awakened under the blood-red light, his aura expanding so violently that several lower-ranking wolves in the front row dropped their heads in submission. Beatrice smiled brightly, stepping forward toward him, extending her hands to receive the mate bond declaration that would cement their union.

"Caleb," Alpha Silas commanded, his voice booming through the cavernous sanctuary. "Claim your Luna before the Moon Goddess and your people."

Caleb didn't look at Beatrice.

He froze, his head snapping sideways as if struck by thunder. His nostrils flared, his chest rising rapidly as a sudden, undeniable scent hit him.

I felt a strange, terrifying pulse shoot through my own veins—a sharp, golden warmth that flared in the center of my chest, so intense I nearly dropped my clipboard.

Caleb turned away from the altar.

"Caleb?" Beatrice's voice cracked through the silence, her polished smile faltering. "Caleb, what are you doing?"

"Caleb, stand down and complete the rite!" Alpha Silas ordered, his voice echoing with Alpha command.

Caleb ignored his father.

With unyielding focus, he stepped off the raised platform. The crowd parted instantly in stunned, terrified silence as he marched down the center aisle. He wasn't looking at the elders. He wasn't looking at the visiting Alphas.

His eyes were locked directly on me.

My breath caught in my throat. I tried to take a step back into the shadow of the pillar, but my legs felt frozen to the floor. The strange, golden heat in my chest burned hotter with every step he took toward me.

Caleb reached the back of the room, stopping directly in front of me.

In the dim torchlight, his eyes were no longer storm-grey. They were blazing with a brilliant, undeniable Alpha gold.

"Caleb..." I whispered, my voice trembling. "What are you doing? Go back."

Without saying a word, Caleb reached out and caught my right hand in his.

The moment his skin touched mine, an explosive wave of energy erupted between us. It wasn't a gentle warmth—it was a roaring, blinding fire that swept through my bloodstream, binding my pulse to his. The air left my lungs in a sharp gasp as the sacred mate bond snapped violently into place, roaring through the air with a power so immense that the glass windows in the dome above rattled.

Gasps of horror echoed from the crowd. Evelyn let out a choked shriek from the dais, and Beatrice stared down at us, her face pale with humiliation and rage.

Caleb didn't care. He laced his fingers through mine, pulling me against his side, his thumb pressing firmly into my wrist where our shared pulse thrashed.

He raised his head, looking back toward the dais where his father stood frozen in fury.

"The Moon Goddess has chosen," Caleb declared, his voice echoing through the silent sanctuary with undeniable authority. "Nora Vane is my mate."

"Silence!" Alpha Silas roared, his face darkening with rage as he slammed his fist against the ceremonial altar. "The ceremony is ended! Clear the sanctuary immediately!"

Chaos broke out across the chamber, but Caleb didn't loosen his grip on my hand for a single second.
