I stood at the vanity and watched my hands move. They were steady. That was the part that didn't fit the rest of the morning. My fingers picked up the silver brush, worked it through the ends of my hair, and set it back down in the exact center of the silk runner without a single tremor. Outside the window, the sun was hitting the white stone of the courtyard, flat and bright and indifferent to the fact that I had not slept for more than an hour at a stretch in three weeks.

SeraBram's knock was barely more than a tap, delivered with the knuckles of his closed fist. I bade him enter, and he slipped in like a shadow. Without being asked, he shut the door behind him.He carried a stack of letters, trussed by a length of cord, his grip tight. The papers made him stand differently, shoulders square and his weight even under him. It was a posture I recognized from the guards marching the halls of Ironmaw. A man carrying a weight, and a secret."Luna," he said.Amara sat on a fur near the wall, working her fingers into the hairs of it and watching them spring back when she let go. She made a small sound at the back of her throat, at nothing."I want to see them myself," I said."I know." He held them a moment longer, and then he gave them to me, and let his empty hand drop to his side.I untied the cord and began to read. The pages were worn and dirty, the corners dog-eared, the ink gone brown at the edges. Mina leaned over my shoulder, her breath hot on the b

Sera"Fine," Mina said at last. "Take the damn thing.""Thank you."It landed flat between us and changed nothing."So when do you plan on getting that letter from," Mina said, and stopped."Bram," I finished for her.She fixed me with a hard stare, her mouth tight and her jaw clenched."When do you plan on getting it from him, so we can actually read the thing?"I sighed. "It's still morning. I'll send for him soon, and have him bring it over. We can look at it together."Mina nodded slowly, her eyes never leaving mine. After a long moment, she turned away, and said nothing more."I need to speak with Vane," I said, the idea solidifying as I voiced it. "Fenris is not here, and he is the only other chief I can reason with right now."Mina tilted her head, frowning. "You sure about that?"I shook my head, meeting her gaze. "No, but he owes me.""Owes you? That makes no sense." Mina's brow crinkled. "He's the one who saved you from that duel. He did you the favor, not the other way arou

LyraAs the door clicked shut behind us, Nadia strode right to my wardrobe and flung it open uninvited. She knew exactly where to find what she was looking for. I raised an eyebrow at her presumption, but didn't say a word. Let her dig out her own damn booze. She poured each glass until it was brimming with amber liquid, and while she did it she kept right on talking."Strangest damn breakfast I ever had," she said, "all of your father's guards lined up along the walls staring at everyone. You think they'd relax a little. Who's going to try anything in there?"She set the bottle down with a clink, picked up her own glass, and tossed it back in one swift motion. I watched this in mute disbelief. Before I could think what to say, she was rattling on again."And what in hell is going on with Odile's brothers? Gero and Rennick. Those are grown men, Lyra. Grown." She snorted. "I bet they're not that bad. Probably just shy around pretty princess types."Without waiting for a reply she was o

SeraMina's words hung in the air. I kept my face still, eyes locked on hers. It took all my will to hold that silence, to give nothing away. Every muscle in my body wanted to speak, to demand the truth from her. But I would not be the one to break.Mina watched me, searching for some hint in my expression of where I stood. But I'd learned to school my features a long time ago. I gave her nothing. She shifted, fidgeting with the edge of her tunic. I remained utterly motionless, a statue of a woman. The stillness built like a physical force, the tension stretching between us until it seemed to hum in the air. Finally, Mina could bear it no longer. "Are you going to tell Fenris?" she asked, her voice tight and urgent.I met Mina's desperate gaze and gave her back three tight words."Lie for you.""I do not want you to lie, I want you not to tell him the truth!" Her hands shook and her voice came fast and high. "You're my friend, you're a better friend than anyone in my whole life, you'r

SeraMina froze. I frowned. She sighed. "Jace."I stared at her, my mind grasping for purchase. "What do you mean, Jace?"Mina swallowed. "I can still reach him on that thing sometimes. Even out there. It's weak and it comes and goes, but it works enough.""How long have you had it?""He gave it to me," she blurted, the words out before she could stop them. "Years ago. We were kids."My brow knit. "When you were little?" I said slowly. "I thought you two met at the border market a year ago.""We did." She was already talking over herself, hands moving. "We did meet there, Sera, that part is true, I'm not lying about that, it was the market, it was the same market, I just meant that before that we, it isn't..."She ran out.I held her gaze. "But as a kid?"Mina opened her mouth. Closed it again. Her shoulders came down."Please don't tell my brother," she whispered. "I beg you."I stared at her. Jace had known Mina when she was a small child. And he had stood in front of Fenris and me

SeraI made my way to the kitchen, phone in hand, thinking through how to get rice without drawing attention to what I was actually doing.Upon entering the warm, bustling space, I scanned the area. A stout woman was working at a counter, chopping vegetables, while a lanky young man stirred a large pot over the stove. I approached the woman."Greetings, Luna," she said, setting down her knife. "What brings you to the kitchen?""I'm hosting a luncheon for Lord Vane and his family," I improvised. "I need a bowl of raw rice. Do you have enough?""Of course, my lady." She wiped her hands and fetched a bowl and a sack of rice from the pantry. Spooning some into the bowl, she asked, "Anything else I can assist you with?"I gave her a warm smile. "No, that's all. Thank you."She bowed her head. "Enjoy your luncheon, Luna."I took the bowl and headed back out, careful to keep my movements natural and unfettered. Once I was alone in the corridor, I slipped the phone down into the rice, burying

LyraShe ignored me. She dropped to her knees, her hands sliding down to the waistband of my trousers. She shoved her fingers inside the fabric, gripping my hips tight. With one sharp pull, she dragged the pants and my underwear down to my ankles. I stepped out of them, kicking my boots off in the

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
