Fenris

I sat beside Jace at the fire, both of us wrapped in furs against the cold. The flames crackled and spat embers into the dark. I felt the heat on my cheeks and my back stayed cold, exposed to the night air. The smell of burning wood filled my nose, sharp and acrid.

Jace huddled deeper into his furs, his shoulders nearly drawn up to his ears. My men were scattered about the yard, their laughter and muffled voices carrying on the breeze.

At the entrance to the Alpha keep, Halvard stood tal

FenrisThe insult hit me in the gut. I felt it in my bones. I held still."Sera," I said. She tilted her head, not following. "What?""Her name. It's Sera."Something came into her face then, and I watched it arrive. She had been swinging in the dark all night and I had just put a lamp in her hand."Sera." She turned it over like she was tasting it. "She is a novelty to you now, Butcher. She will not last a winter up here."I said nothing."The women already laugh at her. Behind her hand, over the wash, every one of them." She came a step nearer. "She does not understand our ways and she never will. What will you do when she cannot hold that seat? You will tire of her. They always tire of the pretty foreign thing."I watched her and did not answer."Sera." She said it again, savouring it now that she had it. "Sera the soft. Sera the Southerner. Do you know what they will call her when she is not in the room? Because they already do."Her chin came up."She is weak and she is soft and

FenrisI walked. The night wind cut at my face and stung the skin of my hands. It came up off the narrow channel below and carried the cold of the water with it.The stone under my boots was slick with damp. To my right the longhouses stood along the edge of the cliff, turf roofs dark against the sky, a few threads of smoke curling from the vents. Behind me the yard still carried voices, a drunken laugh, someone shouting something and being answered.I missed my own fire. My own keep. I missed Sera.Through the bond I could feel her, far off at Ironmaw. She was well. Not distressed. It was enough to know it and it was not enough at all.I wanted to be home.I turned down a narrow way between two of the longhouses. The wind funnelled through it and whistled. Below the cliff the water moved against the rocks, a slow heavy sound with no rhythm to it.Then I heard a footfall on stone behind me, light and unhurried, and under the cold and the salt the smell of wine.I turned. The figure ca

My men were scattered about the yard, their laughter and muffled voices carrying on the breeze. At the entrance to the Alpha keep, Halvard stood talking with another man. Their words were too low to hear, lost beneath the crackle of the fire and the noise of my own men. They did not look like they were planning something. I watched them anyway. We had been back for hours. Corwin had given us nothing. No word, no name, no direction. And Halvard had not come to ask. Not once. A man sends you out to fetch a thing, he wants to know what you brought him. This one had let the whole evening go by and had not put the question to me, and here he sto

Lyra"So what's the biggest headache out there for him?" Odile asked, lying back and curling her toes against the pillow."The fences." Nadia laughed. "Poor Daddy. They're his bane.""Fences," Odile repeated."The pigs keep getting through them, you see. And he's convinced that if he just finds the right materials, the right technique, he'll build one they can't breach." She waved her glass in a small circle. "He's always having a go at it. It never works.""So why does he keep doing it?""He says it's good exercise." Nadia snorted. "I've heard that man go on about those fences more than I've ever heard him talk about scribing, and that is saying something.""I always imagined land could be lovely," Odile said. "To walk on it. Get my hands in the dirt. I bet it's wonderful, having a real place you come from."Nadia snorted. "You're missing out. The smell of pigshit will knock you flat.""I bet it would." Odile was laughing. "But just to see what that's like. To know what a field smell

Lyra"We'll go out there and see what needs doing," I said. "I can help with the harvest. Get things fixed up."Nadia grinned at me. "Daddy would love meeting you.""Would he?""He'd talk your ear off. You'd never get away from him." She reached over and squeezed my ankle. "The last few years have been hard on him. He'd take the help."Odile spoke up lazily from the bed. "I can see it. Princess Lyra, up to her knees in a field.""I'd be terrible at it," I said."You'd be terrible at it," Nadia agreed."I'll sort something out." I waved a hand at the ceiling. "We'll go when we can."The tang of the brandy sat on my tongue. The ceiling went hazy through my half-shut eyes and the rug tickled my cheek. Light glinted off something across the room, a glass, a buckle, I couldn't tell which.A rustle from the bed. Odile shifting her legs."So, Nadia," she said. "What do you actually grow out there? I've never seen a farm in my life."I pushed myself up on my elbows. "That's a lie."Odile tilt

Sera"Months," Mina said, taking up one of the pages again. "This ran for months. There'd have to have been others in on it.""At least.""Eight hundred men is nothing to him," Mina said, closing her fist slowly on the page. "He's holding something back. And is this whole damn thing over now, or"She was not looking at me when she said it. She was looking at Bram, and she did not finish the rest of it, and she did not say the name.I did not answer her straight away, because the answer was sitting in my lap and neither of us wanted it. Kael had never been the one with the men."No," I said.Bram shifted his weight from one foot to the other, drawing my gaze with the soft creak of leather. He cleared his throat once, twice."I haven't answered any of them," he said. "Not one."I looked up."I don't know his hand. I don't know what the two of them had agreed between themselves." He turned his palms over. "Anything I sent back would have been wrong. He'd have known inside a line.""You'v

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
