Chapter 3

作者: Alakazam
I held on in the ICU for two days.

Keith tried every resuscitation procedure he could. But I had been deprived of oxygen for too long, and the lung infection kept getting worse. Every breath was agony.

When I was occasionally lucid, I would look toward the door.

Jane thought that I was waiting for Alden. She held my hand and comforted me softly, “We’ve called your family several times already. They may just not have made it here yet.”

I actually knew they had not failed to get here. They simply did not believe that I would really go through with dying.

When I was a child, I fell off a horse and broke my leg. I called Solana in tears. She was competing in an equestrian event at the time. She said, “Sofia, stop hogging the spotlight every time I have a big moment.”

Later, I passed out from the pain, while Solana won the championship.

The first thing I did after waking up was ask the nurse to save the competition video for me. I was afraid of missing her most dazzling moment.

But she did not know that. She only remembered that I had an accident on the day she won the championship.

Jane wiped my tears. “Just hang in there a little longer. You’re young. There’s no way your family would give up on you.”

I wanted to tell her that was not true and that they had already given up on me.

On the other side, my father had his secretary, Nikki Smith, freeze all my bank cards.

“The only way she can survive out there is if she has money. Freeze her cards, and she’ll come crawling back within three days.”

My mother had my room cleared out.

Solana stood at the doorway and watched the servants haul away the strawberry dresses in the closet, the riding gear, and the photos of us two. Everything was thrown into cardboard boxes.

Then she found a photo of when she was thirteen, and I was eight.

She had taken a bite of strawberry cake, and I had immediately dug out a spoonful, too.

She stared at it for a long time, then said in a serious tone, “She even had to watch me eat cake.”

My mother hugged her heartbrokenly. “It won’t happen again. When Sofia gets back, we’ll make her get rid of all this stuff. She has to learn that she’s not you.”

Solana tossed the photo back into the box. “Don’t let her set foot in my room again.”

Just then, the landline at home rang.

After the servant picked up, her expression changed. “Sir, it’s the hospital. They say, Ms. Darnell—”

My father snatched the phone away. “How much did Sofia pay you?”

Taylor suppressed her anger and said, “She still hasn’t woken up yet. How could she have bribed us? She has multiple organ failures in her heart, lungs, and kidneys.

“She’s in the final stages, and may not make it through the night. Please, at least come and see her one last time.”

My father fell silent for a moment.

Solana’s face went pale.

Alden, however, took the phone and spoke coldly, “Tell her she can drop the act and come home right away so she can apologize to Solana. If she’s not back by midnight, I’ll have my lawyer send over the divorce papers.”

Taylor’s voice trembled with anger. “She’s dying!”

He scoffed. “Then call me when she’s dead.”

After the call ended, the living room fell into an eerie silence.

Solana stood up and said, “I’m going to the hospital.”

My mother blocked her way. “You can’t! This is the most critical moment. If you go now, she’ll never change.”

Tears welled up in Solana’s eyes as she asked, “But what if something did happen?”

My father said in a cold and firm voice, “There is no ‘what if!’ She can’t even bear to lose to you in life, so how could she bear to die?”

At 11:47 p.m. that night, my heart stopped.

Keith resuscitated me for thirty minutes.

At 12:17 a.m., the curve on the monitor flatlined completely.

Jane removed my tubes and wiped the water from my face.

She noticed that my hand had been clutching a soggy, wrinkled piece of paper the whole time. It was Solana’s suicide note.

At the very bottom was a line of text blurred by the river water. I had circled it in red ink. [Solana is dead.]

Little did Jane know that this was the only part of the entire note that I wrote that was still readable.

I had actually written. [Solana is dead. So I have to die, too.]

A year later, my family went bankrupt. After my father sold the villa and paid off the debts, all that was left was an old house. It was the place where Solana and I had lived as children. My mother refused to move out. She said that if I ever came home, I would definitely go there first to look for her.My father no longer called her crazy because he was waiting for me, too. Every night at 7 p.m., he would set out one extra set of utensils and make sure there was always strawberry cake on the table. He used to hate sweets, but he bought one every day. When the cake went bad, he would replace it with a fresh one. My mother would always mutter, “Sofia has a sensitive stomach. She can’t eat too much.”So my father would cut the cake into small pieces. “Then she’ll just eat a little.”The two of them talked as if I was really going to sit down and eat. But that chair stayed empty the whole time. After Arthur was sentenced, the Creese family quickly cut ties with him. Solana

My father was the first to crack. The Darnell Group was already strapped for cash. He had been counting on getting my shares back to shore up the board. Instead, the shares went into the charitable fund, and the fund teamed up with minority shareholders to demand his removal. On the day of the meeting, my father slammed the table and yelled, “I founded the Darnell Group! Who are you to kick me out?”A board member, Noah Kennedy, slid a stack of documents across the table. “Mr. Darnell, over the past few years, our three most profitable projects were all closed by Ms. Darnell. After she died, every single partner walked. “Nobody here is kicking you out. The truth is, you haven’t been able to run this company without her for a long time.”When my father was escorted out of the building by security, the entrance was packed with reporters. Someone chased after him and asked, “Mr. Darnell, do you regret hanging up on the hospital?”He shielded his face and did not dare say a wo

A lot of people still came to my funeral. My father had not invited them. They came on their own.The dessert shop employees stood in a row, as did the equestrian coaches. The Darnell Group staff members I had helped were there as well. They brought strawberry cake, equestrian trophies, and haute couture gowns. All of it had to do with Solana. There was even a group photo from the Creese family wedding. When Solana saw those things, she suddenly went berserk.“Take it away! She wasn’t copying me! I got it all wrong!”No one moved. The dessert shop manager, Pricilla Beck, looked at her with tears in her eyes. “Ms. Darnell ate new products until she got a stomachache. It wasn’t because she loved eating. She said you were picky, and she had to find the best-tasting one for you.”The equestrian coach, Stacy Cavallo, spoke up as well. “The time Ms. Darnell broke her leg, it was because your horse suddenly bolted. She rushed over and pushed you out of the way, and that was how sh

My funeral was set for three days later. My mother insisted on not using Solana’s previous funeral hall.“That one is fake. It’s bad luck.”When she said this, no one responded. Solana’s fake funeral had been a grand affair. Flowers covered the entire corridor. Everyone who mattered had shown up.When it came to me, however, my father wanted to keep things low-key.It was not because he did not love me. It was because he was embarrassed. His eldest daughter faked her death to force his younger daughter to change. But the youngest daughter actually followed and jumped into the river. If word got out, the Darnell family would become the laughingstock of the whole city. My father ordered a media blackout. He also demanded that the hospital list the cause of death as accidental drowning.Jonathan said to him coldly, “Mr. Darnell, this is a homicide investigation, not a PR statement for your company.”My father said through gritted teeth, “There’s no evidence this was a homic

The moment my family walked into the hospital morgue, my mother got sick. She braced herself against the wall and vomited. My father stayed where he was. He stared at the bed with an indifferent expression. His hands stayed by his side as they trembled. Alden moved the fastest. He pushed past Jonathan and rushed to my side in a few strides. “Sofia, cut the act. I’m here.”I lay motionless under the white sheet. He leaned down and reached out to touch my face. The instant his fingertips met my skin, he jerked his hand back. It was too cold, just like the dead. They would not warm up again just because he showed up.“It’s not her.” He turned and walked away. “Her face is waterlogged beyond recognition. What makes you say it’s her?”Jonathan blocked his path. “The necklace, the patient ID number, and the preliminary DNA results all match. Family confirmation is just a formality.”“Yeah, right!” He shoved a cart beside him, sending it flipping over. Metal instruments clattered acro

On the first day after my death, Alden had his lawyer prepare the divorce papers. He signed his name at the end and sent me a picture of it. [I’m giving you one last chance. Come back and apologize to Solana, and I won’t make it official.]The message did not go through. He assumed I had blocked him and smashed his phone in a rage.“She’s really getting out of hand these days!”My mother, meanwhile, converted my room into a walk-in closet. She bagged up all the strawberry ornaments I had collected. She planned to throw them out in front of me once I came home.“We need to break her out of this habit for good. From now on, she doesn’t get to touch anything Solana likes.”Solana tried on one of my white dresses and looked at my mother in the mirror. “This is what Sofia wore on her wedding anniversary.”My mother adjusted the hem for her. “It looks better on you.”Solana was silent for a moment and did not take it off. She only said softly, “If she sees this, is she going to go
