Chapter 2

作者: Alakazam
When Taylor called the second time, my family was filming the finale of a prank documentary.

Solana sat in the center of the frame with tears in her eyes. “I’ve known ever since I was a kid that Sofia doesn’t really like me. She’s just competing with me.

“When I got first place, she stayed up all night doing practice tests. When I liked a dress, she’d buy up every color. Even when it came to marriage, she had to marry my husband’s brother.”

She lowered her head, and her tears fell onto the back of her hand with perfect timing. “It’s not that I hate her. I just want something that’s mine, even just a little bit...”

Alden, who was off camera, frowned.

He knew about everything Solana mentioned. But he had no idea that the year Solana ranked first, I had written in my diary about how amazing Solana was and how I had to work hard too so I would not let her down.

When the dress Solana liked went out of production, I asked someone to buy every color for her. I was afraid that she would have nothing to change into if she ever stained it.

I only married Alden because the night before her wedding, she held me and cried, saying that she was scared of marrying into a family of strangers. That was why I turned down all the arranged marriages and married Alden.

I thought that as long as I stayed close to her, she would never need to be afraid. But she took it as me competing with her. My family thought I was stealing what was hers.

A ringtone cut the filming short. This time, my mother answered the call.

Taylor spoke the moment she picked up. “Is this Sofia Darnell’s family? She’s gone into acute respiratory failure. We called earlier to have a family member confirm her identity and go over her case with you.

“We’re arranging a transfer to a larger hospital that has the equipment she needs. As her family, you need to come in right away to help with the paperwork and the transfer.”

My mother covered the receiver and said softly, “It’s the hospital again.”

My father’s expression darkened. “Put it on speaker.”

Taylor’s voice rang through the living room. “Ms. Darnell’s condition could turn at any moment. She’s still in a coma, and transporting her is extremely high-risk. A family member needs to be here so we can go over everything.”

Solana clutched the hem of her clothes tightly. “Mom, maybe we should go check on her?”

Arthur immediately pulled her back. “Have you forgotten why we staged this whole thing? She only keeps taking your things because she knows you have a soft spot for her.”

Alden’s expression darkened as well. “Just yesterday she promised in front of the funeral hall that she’d learn to be her own person. Then she goes and jumps off a bridge just like you.

“You won’t be saving her if you go to that hospital. You would just be telling her that this trick works.”

After hearing this, my mother said coldly into the phone, “Please don’t play along with her little stunt. If she wants a transfer, she can sign for it herself.”

Taylor was stunned. “She’s in a coma. How is she supposed to sign for herself?”

“Then wait until she wakes up.”

“What if she doesn’t?”

My mother paused for a second, then answered as if out of spite, “Then maybe she shouldn’t wake up.”

With that, she hung up.

In the ER, my chest felt tight, like a band clamped around it, and I could not pull in enough air. The sounds around me were muffled and far away, but I could feel someone tapping my face.

“Ms. Sofia Darnell, wake up! Can you hear me?”

I strained to open my eyes, and the blinding white light made me tear up.

Another nurse in the ER, Jane Wallace, leaned down and asked loudly, “Is there anyone else we can call?”

“My sister...” I said weakly.

“Your sister?”

I shook my head sluggishly. “My sister is dead.”

Jane froze. Before she could answer, the monitor shrieked a sharp alarm.

In the hallway, Taylor tried calling my family again.

This time, Alden did not even glance at it before hanging up.

When the call came through again, he hung up again.

After five times in a row, he irritably turned off his phone. “I’ve had enough! How long is Sofia going to keep up this act?”

Solana stared at the darkened screen, feeling an inexplicable sense creep into her heart. “She’s not actually in trouble, is she?”

He handed her a cup and said, “Relax. She’s always been all bark and no bite. She won’t die just yet. She hasn’t beaten you yet.”

A year later, my family went bankrupt. After my father sold the villa and paid off the debts, all that was left was an old house. It was the place where Solana and I had lived as children. My mother refused to move out. She said that if I ever came home, I would definitely go there first to look for her.My father no longer called her crazy because he was waiting for me, too. Every night at 7 p.m., he would set out one extra set of utensils and make sure there was always strawberry cake on the table. He used to hate sweets, but he bought one every day. When the cake went bad, he would replace it with a fresh one. My mother would always mutter, “Sofia has a sensitive stomach. She can’t eat too much.”So my father would cut the cake into small pieces. “Then she’ll just eat a little.”The two of them talked as if I was really going to sit down and eat. But that chair stayed empty the whole time. After Arthur was sentenced, the Creese family quickly cut ties with him. Solana

My father was the first to crack. The Darnell Group was already strapped for cash. He had been counting on getting my shares back to shore up the board. Instead, the shares went into the charitable fund, and the fund teamed up with minority shareholders to demand his removal. On the day of the meeting, my father slammed the table and yelled, “I founded the Darnell Group! Who are you to kick me out?”A board member, Noah Kennedy, slid a stack of documents across the table. “Mr. Darnell, over the past few years, our three most profitable projects were all closed by Ms. Darnell. After she died, every single partner walked. “Nobody here is kicking you out. The truth is, you haven’t been able to run this company without her for a long time.”When my father was escorted out of the building by security, the entrance was packed with reporters. Someone chased after him and asked, “Mr. Darnell, do you regret hanging up on the hospital?”He shielded his face and did not dare say a wo

A lot of people still came to my funeral. My father had not invited them. They came on their own.The dessert shop employees stood in a row, as did the equestrian coaches. The Darnell Group staff members I had helped were there as well. They brought strawberry cake, equestrian trophies, and haute couture gowns. All of it had to do with Solana. There was even a group photo from the Creese family wedding. When Solana saw those things, she suddenly went berserk.“Take it away! She wasn’t copying me! I got it all wrong!”No one moved. The dessert shop manager, Pricilla Beck, looked at her with tears in her eyes. “Ms. Darnell ate new products until she got a stomachache. It wasn’t because she loved eating. She said you were picky, and she had to find the best-tasting one for you.”The equestrian coach, Stacy Cavallo, spoke up as well. “The time Ms. Darnell broke her leg, it was because your horse suddenly bolted. She rushed over and pushed you out of the way, and that was how sh

My funeral was set for three days later. My mother insisted on not using Solana’s previous funeral hall.“That one is fake. It’s bad luck.”When she said this, no one responded. Solana’s fake funeral had been a grand affair. Flowers covered the entire corridor. Everyone who mattered had shown up.When it came to me, however, my father wanted to keep things low-key.It was not because he did not love me. It was because he was embarrassed. His eldest daughter faked her death to force his younger daughter to change. But the youngest daughter actually followed and jumped into the river. If word got out, the Darnell family would become the laughingstock of the whole city. My father ordered a media blackout. He also demanded that the hospital list the cause of death as accidental drowning.Jonathan said to him coldly, “Mr. Darnell, this is a homicide investigation, not a PR statement for your company.”My father said through gritted teeth, “There’s no evidence this was a homic

The moment my family walked into the hospital morgue, my mother got sick. She braced herself against the wall and vomited. My father stayed where he was. He stared at the bed with an indifferent expression. His hands stayed by his side as they trembled. Alden moved the fastest. He pushed past Jonathan and rushed to my side in a few strides. “Sofia, cut the act. I’m here.”I lay motionless under the white sheet. He leaned down and reached out to touch my face. The instant his fingertips met my skin, he jerked his hand back. It was too cold, just like the dead. They would not warm up again just because he showed up.“It’s not her.” He turned and walked away. “Her face is waterlogged beyond recognition. What makes you say it’s her?”Jonathan blocked his path. “The necklace, the patient ID number, and the preliminary DNA results all match. Family confirmation is just a formality.”“Yeah, right!” He shoved a cart beside him, sending it flipping over. Metal instruments clattered acro

On the first day after my death, Alden had his lawyer prepare the divorce papers. He signed his name at the end and sent me a picture of it. [I’m giving you one last chance. Come back and apologize to Solana, and I won’t make it official.]The message did not go through. He assumed I had blocked him and smashed his phone in a rage.“She’s really getting out of hand these days!”My mother, meanwhile, converted my room into a walk-in closet. She bagged up all the strawberry ornaments I had collected. She planned to throw them out in front of me once I came home.“We need to break her out of this habit for good. From now on, she doesn’t get to touch anything Solana likes.”Solana tried on one of my white dresses and looked at my mother in the mirror. “This is what Sofia wore on her wedding anniversary.”My mother adjusted the hem for her. “It looks better on you.”Solana was silent for a moment and did not take it off. She only said softly, “If she sees this, is she going to go
