Sophie's POV

I found her near the long table of refreshments, a safe distance from her mother's gaze.

Elena was alone, a glass of lemonade in one hand and her certificate tucked beneath her arm. For a moment, I stood in the shadow of a pillar and just watched her.

She looked so *calm*.

That was what I couldn't bear. She wasn't trying to be invisible. She wasn't hovering by the wall waiting for someone to speak to her. She stood with her shoulders relaxed and her chin level, nodding politely as

Elena's POV"Hmm?""You went somewhere.""Sorry.""Don't be." Daniel's hand didn't move. His voice was low. "Whoever's watching, they can't make you dance badly. Only you can do that."I looked at him.He hadn't turned his head. He hadn't glanced at the pillar. But he knew."How…""I'm quite observant," he said. "It's a professional hazard."I laughed, helplessly, and the waltz swept us on.When the final chord faded, applause rippled across the room. Daniel stepped back and released my hand with a small, courteous bow."Thank you.""I didn't step on you.""Not once. I'm almost offended." He offered his arm. "Come. Let me find you something to drink that isn't champagne you've been holding for twenty minutes.""How did you know?""You haven't touched it."I took his arm, and we crossed the floor towards the long refreshment tables near the far wall, where servers were arranging trays of small elegant pastries. The air smelled of roses and warm sugar. My cheeks ached from smiling. My f

Elena's POV"You don't have to answer this," Daniel said, after a moment. "But may I ask something?""That depends.""Is the gentleman in the black mask by the pillar a friend?"I didn't have to turn. I could feel exactly where Adrian was standing, the way you feel a draught from an open window."Which gentleman?""The one who has been trying very hard not to look at us for the past ten minutes."I let out a breath that was almost a laugh."My stepbrother.""Ah.""He's… protective.""I see.""He doesn't mean it unkindly.""I'm sure." Daniel's voice was careful and entirely courteous, but I noticed his eyes didn't move towards Adrian. They stayed on my face. "He's allowed to be. I'd prefer it if he were a little less obvious about it."I looked down at my glass. Now that the words were out, I wished I could see his expression beneath the mask. Was there a flicker of something? The same narrowing I'd glimpsed on the lawn? Or was it only my own imagination, shaped by the warning still tu

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Twenty-Nine — Behind the Masks

Elena's POVThere is a particular kind of tiredness that comes after a day of pretending. It doesn't live in the body, not at first. It settles somewhere behind the eyes, in the muscles of the face, in the small, aching place at the back of the throat where all the things you didn't say have gathered. By the time Victoria knocked on my door at seven o'clock that evening, I had been sitting on the edge of my bed for nearly an hour, staring at the certificate on my pillow, trying to remember what it had felt like to walk across that stage.I remembered it. I could still feel the weight of the folder in my hands. But somewhere between the lawn and Ashford's private dining room, between Sophie's pleasant little knives and Adrian's cold, quiet voice on the stone steps, the memory had become something I had to hold carefully, like a glass that might be dropped.*You have no idea what kind of man Daniel Brooks really is.*I had turned those words over so many times during the afternoon tha

Sophie's POVThe ladies' room was cool and quiet, tiled in pale marble, lit by soft golden sconces. Somewhere beyond the door, the music had started again, a string quartet playing something polite.I locked the cubicle door, stood very still for a moment, and then went to the mirror.A woman looked back at me.She was beautiful. I had always known that. High cheekbones, glossy hair, a mouth painted a careful rose. The dress was perfect. The jewellery was perfect. There wasn't a single thing out of place.Except her eyes.I gripped the edge of the sink and breathed.*Calm. Think.*I turned on the tap and let the water run over my wrists, the way my mother had taught me when I was twelve and had overheard a girl at school call me a social climber. *Cold water, Sophie. It calms the pulse. And no one ever knows.*I patted my face with a tissue. Fixed a strand of hair. Reapplied my lipstick with a hand that was almost steady. And in the silence, I let myself remember. The time I had cried

She stood with her shoulders relaxed and her chin level, nodding politely as a silver-haired man told her something long and tedious about his nephew's law degree. And when he finished, she smiled, and said something that made him laugh. The girl who had once spent entire dinners staring at her plate was holding a conversation with a partner at Richard's firm.*Daniel is no longer beside her,* I thought. *And yet something of him remains.*It was in her posture. In the careful way she held the pendant against her throat, as though it were a reminder of something.I cross

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Twenty-Six — The Woman Beside Him

Sophie's POVI had perfected my smile by the age of nine.It wasn't the wide, careless kind other girls wore. Mine was smaller and softer, tilted at exactly the right angle, the sort of smile that made adults say *what a lovely girl* and made boys forget what they had been about to say. I wore it now as I stood beside Adrian in the private dining room of the Ashford Hotel, a glass of champagne cooling in my hand, and I did not let it slip once. Not when Richard's voice carried across the room for the fifth time."Come, Elena, there are people you simply must meet!"Not when he steered her by the shoulder from one cluster of guests to the next, introducing her to partners and board members and old family friends as though she were a prize he had personally bred. *My daughter. Top of her year. Graduated today.* Not when each of them turned and smiled at her with that special, indulgent warmth people reserve for someone else's success. Not when Victoria, glowing, pearls trembling at he
