Cain's POV

“Celeste will be joining us for dinner tonight. Just the family, nothing formal.”

I looked up from my plate. “Again?”

He took a sip of coffee. “What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing.” I picked up my fork again. “It’s just that we’ve had dinner together several times already.”

“And?”

I knew better than to argue. My father had made up his mind about Celeste and me, and no amount of complaining from me seemed to make a difference.

“Fine,” I muttered.

Across the table, Roxy kept eating as if

My father had made up his mind about Celeste and me, and no amount of complaining from me seemed to make a difference.“Fine,” I muttered.Across the table, Roxy kept eating as if we were discussing the weather. She didn’t look at me, but I noticed her fingers pause around her fork before she continued cutting her food.It was a small thing; anyone else would have missed it, but I didn’t. Since we’d started sneaking around, we’d become good at pretending nothing was happening between us. We could sit at the same table, talk to the same people, and pass each other in the hallway without giving anything away. That didn’t mean I liked it.And judging by the way Roxy suddenl

Cain's POV “You’re taking Celeste to dinner tonight.” My father said it over breakfast as he reached for his coffee, not even bothering to look at me. I put down my fork. “No, I’m not.” “Yes, you are.” “Have you ever considered asking me before making plans for my life?” He turned a page of his newspaper. “Would you have agreed if I’d asked?” “No.” “Then I saved us both some time.” My expression hardened. Sometimes I wondered if he just enjoyed getting on my nerves. “Why are you so bent on making this happen?” I asked. “Celeste and I barely know each other.” “That’s why you’re taking her to dinner.” He finally looked up. “How do you expect to get to know someone if you never spend time with them? You can’t fall in love with someone you only see at family dinners.” “I’m not trying to fall in love with her.” “You don’t know what might happen if you give it a chance.” “I know I don’t want to.” My father folded his newspaper. “You can dislike the arrangement all

Roxy's POV“You’re good for me, you know that?”I looked up from my coffee to see Daniel smiling at me as he stirred sugar into his cup.“That’s a strange thing to say about someone you’re only pretending to date.”“Am I pretending?” He glanced at me over his cup. “Because I could have sworn we had a good time at dinner last night.”“We did.”“And you seemed to enjoy yourself the last time we went out, too.”I sighed. “You’re not making this easier.”“I’m not trying to.” His smile faded a little. “Roxy, I know we only started doing this because our parents wanted us to. But somewhere along the way, I started looking forward to seeing you.”I set my cup down, trying to work out whether he was teasing me.He shrugged, almost embarrassed. “What? I’m not allowed to enjoy spending time with you now?”“Of course you are.” I ran a hand through my hair. “I just didn’t realize you meant it.”“Meant what?”“Like you actually mean it.”He set his spoon down and leaned back in his chair. “But I d

Cain's POVRoxy pressed her hand against my chest and gave me a warning look.I glanced at the door, then back at her. “What?”“Keep your voice down.”“I’m whispering.”“You’re not whispering.”I grinned. “Come here.”“I’m trying to have a serious conversation.”“So am I.”She tried to hold on to her annoyed expression, but I kissed her before she could say anything else. Her fingers caught my shirt, and she kissed me back until I pulled away just enough to look at her.“There,” I whispered. “Better?”She rolled her eyes, but the corners of her mouth refused to turn down.We were in the library, tucked away at the far end between two tall shelves. The lights in the hallway had been switched off hours ago, and everyone else was probably asleep. We should have been in our separate rooms, asleep like sensible people. Instead, we had found another excuse to be alone. It had been two weeks since we started sneaking around. After everyone went to bed, I found one excuse after another to get

Roxy's POV“Take it off.”I had barely closed the door when Cain’s voice came out of the darkness. I stopped with one heel still in my hand. I was exhausted from the gala, and Daniel’s cologne lingered faintly on my shoulder, where he’d leaned in to say goodnight.I rolled my eyes. “Hello to you, too. I take it you enjoyed the evening?”“I’ve spent four hours watching Daniel touch you.” He walked toward me. “You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not in the mood for small talk.”I set my bag on the nearest chair. “You were the one who advised that I go through with this arrangement,” I told him.“Take it off,” he said, stepping closer. “I want you out of that dress.”My pulse jumped. “Cain…”“Where did he touch you?” His hand settled on my waist. “Here?”I gave him a tired look. “Cain, he was being polite. We were in public.”“That wasn’t what I asked.”“Yes, there.” I covered his hand with mine. “Nowhere else.”“Good.” He leaned down, brushing his lips against my neck. “I hated having to s

Cain's POV“She looks happy, doesn't she?”Marcus stood beside me, nodding toward the dance floor.Roxy laughed at something Daniel said. His hand rested on her lower back as he leaned toward her while they spoke, and from where I stood, they looked comfortable together too comfortable.“Looks like it,” I said, taking a sip of my drink.Marcus glanced at me. “You don’t have to pretend with me.”“I’m not pretending.”“Right.” He looked back at the dance floor. “Then why do you look like you want to drag him away from her?”I shot him a warning look, and he raised his free hand in mock surrender. “Fine. I’ll leave it alone.”“Good.”“But for what it’s worth, I don’t think she’s as happy as she looks.”My eyes went straight back to Roxy.Marcus shrugged. “I’ve spent enough time around her to know when she’s putting on a show. She laughs at whatever someone says, then the moment they look away, she’s back to that serious expression.”Daniel turned to greet someone nearby, and Roxy’s smile
