MIGUEL

I clutched the sheets to my chest, trembling.

My skin still stung from his touch but that wasn’t what bothered me. My heart raced, not from passion, but from shock.

Salvatore had unconsciously moved a few feet away, frozen, as if the gravity of what had just happened hadn’t fully hit him yet. Then it did.

“Miguel,” he whispered in horror. I watched the fire in his eyes die. He took a shaky step toward the bed and dropped to his knees, shaking. “I didn’t mean to—I swear to God, baby, I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

His face looked nothing like the one that had just hovered over mine moments ago. That face was twisted in anger and driven by something deeper than lust.

Now, he looked wrecked. His eyes were wide with guilt, his mouth quivering like he might throw up or cry—or both.

“Please,” he whispered again, leaning closer and pressing his lips gently to my shoulder. “I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”

I flinched before I could stop myself and he froze. His lips barely brushed me, bu

  • My Stepfather's Deadly Obsession   I'm not leaving her

SALVATOREWhat the fuck was he thinking? My shoes crashed against the pavement, my lungs screaming for air as I chased after Miguel. He had already vanished into the inferno and the front of the building was shuddering beneath waves of rising flame. “Miguel!” I shouted desperately, but it was like yelling into a hurricane. Nothing came back but the roar of fire and the sharp pop of breaking glass.I didn’t hesitate. I threw myself into the heat. The moment I crossed the threshold, it hit me like a punch to the chest. A wave of blistering air surged forward, thick with the stench of scorched wood and melting plastic. Smoke clawed down my throat and made my eyes sting but I kept going. “Miguel!” I raised an arm to cover my mouth. The walls crackled and the floor groaned beneath my shoes. The ceiling wept fire.“Miguel!” I bellowed again, my heart pounding so loud I could barely hear my voice. I shoved through a half-melted doorframe and stumbled up a narrow staircase that shrieked an

  • My Stepfather's Deadly Obsession   What have I done?

SALVATORE The phone’s shrill ring yanked me from sleep, slicing through the quiet like a blade. My heart jumped as I scrambled to find it on the nightstand, knocking over a glass of water in the process. Fuck! My fingers finally grasped the phone, and I answered without checking the caller ID.“Yeah?”“Sal, it’s Raphael.” The voice on the other end was urgent, hushed, but clear. It was the same guy from the café, the one who was helping me with information about my brother. The sleep disappeared immediately.“I dug up clearer footage, man,” he said. “Crystal clear. I can’t send it since we agreed our deal should be in-person only.”I’d requested that they find a clearer version, because clarity would bring more clarity. We could zoom in on the phone and check who Matteo had called. We could…My blood surged. I clenched the sheet in my fist, fighting the tide of emotion rising in my chest.“Hold onto it,” I said tightly, swinging my legs off the bed. “We’ll meet soon. Name the time.

  • My Stepfather's Deadly Obsession   What now?

MIGUEL“What’s wrong, baby?” Salvatore frowned, leaning casually against the bathroom doorframe. His hair was damp, clinging to his forehead, and his towel hung low on his hips. He suddenly grinned. “Wait, are you pulling my legs?”“This is not a joke, Sal,” I said barely above a whisper. My arms were crossed tightly across my chest like I could physically hold in everything I didn’t know how to say. The air in the room was warm from the shower, but I felt cold. My stomach was a knot, twisted tightly with everything Mama Sofia had said about the danger that would come if Salvatore left this house. His smile faltered. He stepped forward slowly, cautiously, like he was approaching a wild animal he wasn’t sure wouldn’t bite. “What do you mean it’s not a joke, baby?” he asked. “You were the one begging to leave this place. You said you were done with Mama’s cold stares and the marble halls and Pietro’s creepy smirks. What changed?”I looked down at the mosaic tiles beneath my feet, sudd

MIGUELI didn’t enjoy surprises. Hell, I hated them. And Salvatore was milking my uneasiness. There was a lightness to his steps, a smirk tugging at his lips that only deepened every time I tried to squeeze a hint of information out of him.“Come on, Sal,” I said, nudging him gently with my elbow. “What’s the big deal? You’ve had me guessing all morning.”“You’ll find out soon enough.” He squeezed my hand and glanced at me with a glint in his eye that only made my curiosity grow. “Just be patient, baby.”I rolled my eyes, though my heart felt lighter than it had in days. With each step further from the chancellor’s office where I expected the surprise to be, I got more confused. We entered the library through tall arched doors that creaked softly on their hinges. The cool air inside washed over me, carrying with it the scent of aged paper, leather bindings, and varnished oak. The space stretched wide and tall, the shelves climbing toward a domed ceiling painted with stars so faded th

  • My Stepfather's Deadly Obsession   Comfort

MIGUELI screamed, and it wasn’t some casual yelp. It tore from the centre of my chest, bouncing off the high ceilings and echoing through the halls of the too-fancy Sicilian mansion. I scrambled backwards across the bed, kicking at the sheets, my heart hammering in my chest like it was trying to escape. There, just by the glass doors that opened to the balcony, was a goddamn snake. Its green scales shimmered in the soft morning light, catching it like polished jade. The bastard slithered slowly with grace as if it had lived here its entire life.Everything about the room suddenly felt claustrophobic. My breath came in fast bursts as my eyes locked on the creature that had no business being inside any building, let alone one with throw pillows that cost more than I could afford.I could hear heavy footsteps pounding up the staircase, and within seconds, the bedroom door flew open. Salvatore burst in first, wielding his gun skillfully. His eyes swept the room like a trained soldier.
