Chapter 1

My mother, the Queen Consort, was the only sweet and naive woman in the Palace harem whom anyone could bully. She could not even remember the correct sequence of the consorts who were supposed to pay their daily morning respects.

It was a blunder to allow a disgraced consort, who had been banished to isolation, to pay her respects before the Noble Consort. This caused dissatisfaction in the harem, which was supposed to be managed by the Queen Consort.

When the Royal Household handed the accounts to her, Mother backed away and claimed that she was not good with numbers.

My father, the King, doted on her tremendously, and he transferred the responsibility to the King's Cabinet to help her with the accounts.

Mother was so clumsy that she once lost her Queen Consort's Signet Ring in the Royal Garden. The ring lay under the sun for 3 days until a young groundskeeper found it. Mother rewarded him with several gold coins for retrieving it.

During stormy nights, she cowered in Father's arms, covered her ears, and cried. It worried Father so much that he summoned the Royal Physician late at night to make sure that Mother was fine.

When consorts rebuked Mother, she turned red in the face while she listened silently. The next day, she bestowed a box of pearls upon them as an olive branch, which was quite absurd.

During royal banquets, Father peeled the skin off grapes to feed her. She found them cold, so Father held them in his palm until they turned warm before feeding the grapes to her.

Whenever Mother told Father in a coquettish way that her legs hurt, he held her up the steps in front of everyone present without any shame. Father always reminded me in private, "Never let your mother get involved with any complicated issues. She will not be able to handle it."

Everyone in the Palace called her "Your Majesty" respectfully, yet behind her back, they criticized her for being an incompetent fool. Mother never threw her weight around, nor did she try to restrict me by imposing rules.

When I was younger, the first thing Mother did whenever I got into trouble was shield me behind her, and she berated the Palace staff who told on me.

After I came of age, Mother helped me pick a husband with tears in her eyes. She focused on good‑looking individuals. "My daughter has to look at a handsome face for the rest of her life."

The night before my wedding, she bawled her eyes out while she clutched my wedding gown, and she kept repeating, "If anyone ever bullies you, do not hold it in. Come home and tell me."

I thought Mother was being naive because I was the Princess, and no one would ever dare to bully me. Unfortunately, her advice turned out to be right.

On the night of my wedding, my husband, Baron Isaac Seymour, treated me with tenderness and consideration. He helped remove my earrings and tucked me in before he leaned close to my ear and whispered, "I will not ever let you down, Princess."

I was filled with joy, thinking that I had married the right man.

The next morning, I woke up to host the morning reception for Isaac's family as per tradition. My mother‑in‑law, Camilla Seymour, sat at the table but did not look at me. She slowly removed a gold bracelet from her wrist, yet she refused to drink from the cup of tea I served.

Time passed, and the tea turned cold, yet Camilla refused to let me sit. She continued forcing me to serve everyone at the table. My arms shook from holding the heavy teapot, and it was only then that she reached out to touch her cup.

She sneered. "I do not think I can accept a cup of tea from you, Princess. How are you supposed to serve your husband and your in‑laws when you are acting like a spoilt child on your first day of marriage?"

My father‑in‑law, Hugo Seymour, grunted unhappily. "A pampered girl brought up in the shielded walls of the Palace does not understand proper etiquette at all."

Isaac stared at me coldly and said nothing to help me. I continued standing and serving tea, wondering if the tenderness Isaac had shown me in bed the night before had been a hallucination.

Camilla waved at someone at the door to come to the table. "Roxana, bring Ignatius here to pay his respects to the Princess."

A gentle‑looking woman came forward while she held the hand of a 3‑year‑old boy. When the boy saw Isaac, he let go of her hand and ran to Isaac. He called out, "Father!"

All I could hear was ringing in my ears as I dropped the teapot. It crashed to the ground and splashed tea all over my dress. I looked up in disbelief. "What did he just call you?"

"You pretended to be naive for decades, and you even kept it from me?"Mother was silent for quite a while before she replied in a soft voice, "Before the late King passed, he held my hand and told me that Prince Edmund was wildly ambitious, and he could only leave the kingdom in my care."He said that if I attracted too much attention, I would not be able to live for long, which was why I pretended to be silly, foolish, and ignorant. I did not expect the act to continue for decades."There was a long silence in the room, and I thought Father would not say another word. However, he spoke again, sounding pained. "Are you not tired after all these years?"Mother did not reply, yet I knew she was crying. Father continued in a hoarse voice, "From now on, I will act alongside you."Mother smiled and choked back a sob. "You do not need to do that. It is time to return this kingdom to its rightful owner."My tears could not stop falling as I listened to their conversation outside the ro

She was stripped of all titles and relegated to a commoner. She had once been the highly regarded Noble Consort, and when she was dragged out of the Palace doors, she turned back to yell at Mother."You put on a pretty good act! I schemed half my life in the Palace, only to lose to a woman who pretended to be foolish!"Mother did not even look at her when she replied, "I am not the one you lost to. You lost to yourself."Vivienne was dragged off, never to be seen again.Isaac was sent into exile 3,000 miles away to the border. On the day he w

In order to live, Isaac revealed the mastermind behind everything.News came from jail that Isaac wanted to see Mother because he had something to say, and Mother went. I went with her.It was dark and humid in jail, and the moldy air was filled with the stench of blood.Isaac sat behind the bars, looking haggard and thin. He had once been a dashing man, yet now his cheeks had sunk in, and there were dark rings beneath his eyes. He no longer looked like the noble he once was. When he saw Mother, he fell to his knees with a loud plop on the cold ground and begged, "I am guilty, and I deserve death, but please have mercy on me. I am willing to reveal the mastermind behind everything!"Mother looked at him coldly. "Talk."Isaac swallowed hard and said in a trembling voice, "The person who instructed the Seymours to ask for the Princess' hand in marriage to produce an heir of the Royal bloodline was the late King's younger brother, Prince Edmund."I was in shock.Edmund was my uncl

That night, the Royal Guards surrounded the Seymour Residence.I stood outside and watched the door where I had been forced to slap myself for the past 6 months being kicked open. Crying, screaming, begging, and the sound of things being rummaged through came from inside. It was chaos. The servants who had bullied me haughtily because of the Seymours' silent consent were dragged out and forced to their knees. The Royal Guard Commander came forward to report their seizure of the Seymours and their assets loudly."Princess, we have found three boxes of ledgers proving corruption, 27 letters confirming that they sold official positions, and proof of Roxana docking the allowance of Your Highness when she was taking care of the household accounts, and taking the Princess' dowry for her own."I was surprised that there were accounting records of my cold meals and old clothes given to me in the past 6 months. Every cent that Roxana had docked from me had been returned to the Seymours' poc

The Seymours no longer showed any ounce of respect for Mother when they saw she had failed to put them in their place twice. Isaac's arrogance went to his head, and he became even more insolent than before."If the Queen Consort is still determined to make a mess of the situation, I would have no choice but to make a joint request with all the court officials to request that she be stripped of her title!"The request to strip Mother of her Queen Consort title caused a commotion.Roxana's hips swayed as she walked slowly toward Mother and smiled brightly. "Your Majesty, a pushover like you is only able to stand here, thinking that you have real power, because the King dotes on you."Look around here. Who in this hall has any respect for you? Who here has not called you an incompetent fool behind your back?"Camilla and Hugo yelled in agreement, causing more laughter in the hall.I could no longer take it. Tears streamed down my face as the anger and sorrow I had suppressed for 6 m

The Seymours grew even more insolent after escaping death. Isaac even went as far as to confidently advise Father about the Queen Consort. "Your Majesty, please forgive my bluntness, as I have something to say."Isaac turned the tables on Mother and claimed that she was trying to interfere with the imperial court. He accused her of being jealous in nature and lacking virtue as a Queen Consort for calling for an execution during a gala. He said she was a disgrace to the Royal Family."Your Majesty has always been just, and I would like to ask for justice on behalf of Roxana and me."Vivienne's supporters immediately took the cue to voice their dissatisfaction with Mother. They took turns declaring why Mother was not worthy of being the Queen Consort. It hurt tremendously to watch this from behind Mother, especially when I saw how thin and frail she was.I had wondered many times in the past 6 months if I would be able to escape the horrible abuse by the Seymours when they confined
