“Where are you hiding her?”

“Death to traitors, wife stealers, and kidnappers. Death to bond-breakers and trust-betrayers”
Pak! Pak! Pak!
“Hello. Girl.”
‘Dub-dub dub-dub’
That nightmare again.
Every time, it’s the same scene – a man getting beaten to death while a girl stood frozen by the door. It would abruptly end when a man kneels in front of the girl, alerting my mind that it’s time to wake up. With heart racing all the time.
‘Take your medicine’
‘Find a friend’
‘Be kind. At least to yourself’
Words of affirmation I stuck on the mirror to remind myself daily on how I should live my life instead of how I wanted it to be – guilt-ridden, miserable, alone.
Some would say nightmares are products of imagination but mine happened twenty years ago. When three masked men came to my neighbour, Mr. Johnson, and beat him to death, leaving my friend Bryce, orphaned. I knew Bryce hated me for not cooperating with the police, but like what my father said to prevent me from testifying, ‘you’re just five’.
‘Ding’
‘1 unread email’
Well, I’m not five anymore and I made it my life’s mission to bring justice to Mr. Johnson and Bryce no matter how long it takes. And I’ll do that by bringing down the organization responsible for his death: The Sticks.
My heart is still pounding when I read the contents of the email. It’s from my anonymous source ‘Ace’.
‘Some by blood, some by chains. What you seek is forged by both. One cruel rein for the father, and one rein for the cruel son. And though the son’s mind is clear, his heart is not. Where the father’s heart is clear, his hands and conscience are not.’
This was Ace’s reply when I posed him my theory about the organization’s hierarchy and the possibility that it has a father-and-son duo at the helm. My theory is finally proven. If I could expose them to the public, investigation would follow that would lead to their fall.
I excitedly invited my editor over to discuss my docu-series proposal but it took a lot of convincing for her to entertain my proposal.
“Trust me on this, Ara,” I reassured her.
“Okay,” she heaved a deep breath before continuing. “Tell me all the details and I’ll stick my neck out for you,” she demanded.
After giving her all the major activities of the Sticks in the last five years and how their operation have changed in the past year, she finally agreed that we should bring this to our bosses’ attention.
We agreed on our presentation strategy for the next day, but when I arrived at the office, everyone’s singing praises to congratulate her.
“What’s happening?” I asked my friend Veronica.
“Ara wanted to investigate the Sticks and the chief rewarded her with a $50,000 bonus. He even assigned bodyguards and moved her to a secured residence. I heard it’s an exclusive villa,” she added.
The rest of Veronica’s words did not register anymore. All I could hear was ‘Sticks, Bonus, Bodyguards, Villa’ repeatedly and before I knew it, I dashed to Ara’s office.
“Oh, you sly, old, fox.” I shouted at the top of my lungs. “This is my life’s work. My blood, sweat, and tears. How could you steal it from me?”
When my outburst was met with silence, that’s when I notice other presence inside the room.
“Well, guys, I told you someone obsessed will not take this lightly,” Ara said to the rest of the group including our chief editor and other upper management. One by one they left until only me and Ara remained.
“Collette, do you still remember the first lesson I taught you when you said you wanted to investigate The Sticks?” she calmly walked to her desk before taking a seat. “I told you not to trust anyone and to always cover your ass. Do you finally realize how vultures would wait patiently and swoop in as soon as the opportunity presents itself?” The condescension in her tone was unnerving.
“You cannot complete this documentary, Ara. I have all the documents. Documents you cannot obtain in your lifetime,” I reminded in gritted teeth.
“Who said I will run the docu-series? If I can enjoy all the benefits just by proposing an idea, why risk my life antagonizing these powerful people?”
“You won’t get away with this.” I slammed on her desk before walking towards the door.
“Stop!”
“Nicolette Meyers, with pen name Nico Sticks, for conducting an unauthorized investigation, endangering an anonymous resource person, and, for using the company’s name and resources for unofficial business. You are hereby, TERMINATED! You have the rest of the day to clear your desk and to settle your affairs with HR.”
‘Terminated’
‘Unauthorized’
But she clearly knew what I was doing.
The words were still ringing in my ears but based on her ice-cold demeanour, this is part of her plan. She not only took my work and my benefits; she wanted to take my livelihood too.
But if she thought she broke me, she didn’t know me at all.
I went back to my desk pretending nothing happened as I interacted with my colleagues. When they invited me for lunch at the expensive Grand Royale Hotel, I gladly accepted while thinking which of my appliances should I sell next to cover this month’s rent.
I tried to be enthusiastic during lunch, engaging at every topic, but when I felt someone was staring at me, my surrounding froze in silence. And all I could hear was two alternating heartbeats; one from me and the other from the masked man, donning a 17th century ball attire. My heart skipped a beat trying to match his rhythm as we held each other’s gaze, but as soon as my surroundings returned to normal, he was gone. Leaving me doubting my vision, or if I was really transported back in time.
After a long lunch, I arranged for a courier to bring my box to my apartment and the heavy fan mail to my storage unit before leaving the office for the last time.
I was mindlessly walking to my apartment thinking about Ara’s betrayal, the masked man, my rent, and my future, when I found a box on my doorstep and a severed hand beside it.
What the –
A s-severed hand?
“Ahhhhhh!!!”
Have ‘they’ found me?
“Good evening, Steffan,” Dem greeted.“You hungry? There’s food in the kitchen,” Steffan invited him in and I was left alone on the steps contemplating on how to go from here. Just the thought of my brother being the head of an organized group makes my stomach churn.I was about to walk back in when another car parked in front of the apartment.“Colette,” Johnny came out with a tired expression on his face. “I need to have a word with your brother,” his voice was stern and I knew he means business. Maybe Johnny is the right person to sort Dem out. Maybe bring him in the police station or something so he will know what’s waiting for him if he stayed on this path.I followed Johnny as he took long strides to reach the kitchen in no time.“Hey kid,” he gently called out to my surprise. Then he pulled Dem to his chest before inspecting every part of his body.“Did they hurt you? What did they do to you?” Johnny asked worriedly. There goes the sorting him out. “Let’s go out. Colette, it’s
I watched as the once mighty Nicholas Meyers slumped on his wheelchair feeling the weight of the world pressed on him. His threatening eyes is now filled with tears as remorse flooded him. I didn’t expect that meeting Dem would have that effect on him.“Elena, I’ll see you soon,” he said with pain in his voice. “I’ll see you soon, my love. I’m sure the afterlife wouldn’t be so bad because you’re in it,” the way he talks to Elena’s picture is sending a shiver down my spine. I feel the air suddenly became stuffy. It’s difficult to see your own father lose it like that.“Jim, please come in,” I called Jim to discuss the Meyers affairs after-Nicholas scenarios. As soon as Jim came in, I stood from my seat but vision turned blurry and my world started spinning. “Jim, I think my father has – ahhh – lost it,” I managed to blurt out before I felt my body falling down into the abyss.“Nicolette!” Jim shouted before I pass out then footsteps followed. When I regained consciousness, I heard Jim
“Taken? What do you mean taken?” panic surged through me thinking my baby bother is being tortured by whoever took him.“I don’t know the details. I was with Johnny when we heard from the national guard’s frequency that they found someone distributing black diamonds and the national guards were mobilized. When we reached the theme park we heard that some group beat them to it,” Steffan explained while we’re on the way to get Elena.I was trying to process what he’s saying but alarm bells started ringing. Why the Marbles? Have they linked the Marbles to me?“What makes you think it’s the Marbles who took him?” I asked but he paused for a while before responding to my enquiry.“It was Johnny who assumed based on the location and the reaction of the national guards,” he said. I guess there’s only one way to confirm. To go West.“I think I need to go West. If the Marbles have Dem, I can ask Jim for help to find him,” I told him my plans. I’m sure Dem would know what to do if my father’s m
“Once we’re back at the marina, I don’t want to see you interacting with her,” in a moment of extreme emotion, I pushed Steffan on his chest until his back is against the cabin door. “I swear, Steffan, you’re mine now. You have no idea what I’m capable of. She’s part of your past, leave her there. I didn’t crawl out of the darkest places of my mind just for you to shove me back in there,” I warned him in a controlled breath. I now have something I can call my own I won’t let anyone take it away from me. Not even a decorated hero. I was still fuming when Steffan suddenly pulled me to him, restricting my movements. “I know you’re angry right now and I will accept everything you will throw at me if that will help you calm down. My conscience is clear, she’s not my ex. That’s all that matters to me,” he said in a gentle but firm voice that I started doubting myself. He slowly let me go but he has this sombre expression. As if offende
My head hurts.I must have drunk so much last night but honestly, who can blame me? For a long time, I’ve convinced myself that I would most probably grow old and die alone. And I truly believed that. Until a stranger came into my life and made me realize that living with someone who cares for you is not such a bad idea. The same stranger who gave me security and comfort. And last night he invited me to spend the rest of our lives together. He gave me peace. He calmed my worries and stopped my chaotic mind even for just a while. And I have never felt more at home.“Sleep some more,” Steffan stirs in his sleep as he pulls me closer to his naked body. And the scenes of last night comes flashing back and it was the sexiest scene ever.I felt really sleepy while stargazing last night and my vision was in and out. I could hear Steffan whispering sweet nothings and his luscious voice stirred something inside me. With the courage from the wine, I pretended to be asleep and when he was about
The chauffeur blindfolded Colette and assisted us in our service car. I could tell she was nervous by the way she take in deep breaths and how cold her hands were. I decided to be a gentleman and offered her my coat but what I really wanted to do is to remove all the restrictions that covers our bodies.“Are you cold?” I asked in my lowest, huskiest voice possible.“It’s okay, just not used to being blindfolded,” she replied in her soft voice but I could see how she pressed her thighs together. I think it’s going to be a long night for both of us unless we both decided to give in. The sexual tension has been brewing since the first day we met and we’ve reached a point where we cannot ignore it.“Steffan, I’m scared,” she admitted softly.“Hold my hand. I won’t let anything bad happen to you,” I reassured her and I can feel her body leaning closer to mine. If I could just stick her body to mine all the time I would have done it ages ago just to ensure her safety. But sometimes, the saf
