Linda dropped her piece of licorice as her mouth dropped open. Her eyes were the widest Eve had ever seen. Her mouth closed and opened again, but no sound came out.

Finally, she cleared her throat and asked, “He stayed the night?”

Eve nodded, feeling her face must be glowing from the heat she felt.

“I’d ordered Chinese, and he happened to stop by as it was delivered, so I invited him in,” she told Linda. “We watched a movie and talked, then before you know it, it was time for him to leave, but neither of us wanted him to.”

Linda grinned at her and said, “So, you convinced him to stay.”

Eve nodded with a smile but couldn’t meet her friend’s eyes.

Leaning even closer, Linda asked in a low voice, grinning at her friend, “And how was it?”

Eve grinned back and wiggled her eyebrows.

“It was as good as you’d expect,” she said.

Linda sat back in her seat and fanned herself with the bag of licorice.

“Whoooo, girl,” she said, grinning. “You are one lucky woman.”

Eve giggled and n

“Arec? Are you in there? It’s me, Julia,” his sister called. Arec and Eve looked at each other before Arec walked to the door and opened it. Julia glanced at Eve over her brother’s shoulder, grinning at her before looking at Arec and holding out an envelope to him. He took the envelope with a questioning frown.“It’s from Mother,” Julia said, all trace of the smile gone from her face. “I brought it up as soon as I got it.”“Thanks,” Arec told her, turning away to open the envelope. He pulled out a sheet of paper and read it in silence, his frown deepening. Eve watched him, twisting the robe belt as she did.“What is it?” Eve asked after he lowered the letter, but didn’t speak.Arec looked toward the door and saw Julia waiting, one eyebrow raised. He nodded at her and said, “Gather everyone. We’ll meet in the study to discuss this.”After Julia left, Arec turned toward Eve and said, “Get dressed, and meet me in the study. Get Linda dressed and bring her. This concerns you both, too.

“Does this mean you’re splitting from your mother and making your own pack?” Sabrina asked, her eyes wide. Arec looked at Michael, who nodded and said, “Yes. That’s what I’m going to do. Start my own pack, and if the rest of my siblings who are fighting the werewolf pack wish to join me, they can.” Sabrina shook her head and said, “Your mother won’t like this one bit.” Arec shrugged and said, “My mother’s time has passed. It’s time for a new way of doing things.” He glanced over his shoulder toward Eve and Linda and added, “I also think it’s time for you and Craig to take the rest of your pack and leave the area.” Looking back at her, he added, “I don’t think you want to be between two Lycan clans as they fight for territory.” Sabrina swallowed hard and nodded. “Have Craig call off the pack, then leave this area,” Arec told her. “Otherwise, you’re going to have to deal with us, and right now, it doesn’t seem like you’re doing well in that department.” Sabrina glared at him be

Eve got to her feet, shaking her head. She saw Craig and Sabrina scrambling to untangle themselves while Arec hurried toward her. “Go after the doctor!” Eve yelled at him. “I’ll follow you.” Arec skidded to a halt, then nodded at her and turned to run into the trees, following the doctor. Eve staggered a few steps before regaining her footing and followed Arec into the trees, trying to catch the doctor’s scent. “Do you have his scent?” she asked Arec when she caught up to him. He shook his head and said, “I lost it soon after coming into the trees. I think he must have used something to block his smell from us.” Eve stopped and lifted her nose in the air, trying to pick up the doctor’s scent. Growling, she turned in a circle twice to pick it up, but was unsuccessful. “Anything?” Arec asked. She shook her head and asked, “You?” When he shook his head, she snarled and said, “Let’s get back to Craig and Sabrina, and I’ll tear the doctor’s location out of them. They must know

The doctor screamed as he felt Eve lunge toward his exposed neck. Sabrina skidded to a stop about five yards away from them when she saw Eve move to bite the doctor. Arec burst through the front door, followed by Craig. He stopped when he saw Eve’s mouth over the doctor’s neck. “Eve! No!” he called to her, using their telepathy. “Tell everyone to back off, or I will bite him,” she told Arec. Arec shifted back into his human form and held his hands up to Craig and Sabrina, saying, “Back off, or she’ll bite the doctor.” Craig and Sabrina halted, then looked at each other. With a nod, they turned back to Arec. “Ask them if he can turn her back,” Eve said, not moving from her position over the doctor. Arec looked at her, then back at Craig and Sabrina, asking, “Can he reverse the procedure?” Sabrina shifted back into her human form and asked, “Why would he want to do that?” Eve growled, causing the doctor to yelp in fear. Sighing, Sabrina said, “If she could back away from

Eve growled low in her throat as she saw Sabrina standing beside Craig in his werewolf form. Another man she didn’t recognize stood on the other side of Craig and looked at her with unease. She figured that must be the man who turned Linda. Arec shifted back into his human form and raised an eyebrow at Sabrina. “Consorting with the enemy yourself?” he asked. Sabrina frowned as she glanced at Craig, then glared at Eve and said, “This wouldn’t have happened if you’d allowed nature to take its course and let Craig have Eve as his mate. Then, you and I would be together. Werewolf with werewolf and Lycan with Lycan. No intermingling of the species.” Arec shook his head as he looked at her and said, “You know that’s not how this works. You know how fated mates work.” Sabrina snorted and said, “That only works in children’s stories.” Arec looked at Sabrina, standing beside Craig with her hand on his head, before looking at Craig, then back to Sabrina again. “Are you sure about that

Breaking through the trees surrounding the house, Arec noticed that all the lights were off, and the house was dark. He slowed and held up his arm for Eve to wait. “What is it?” she asked, looking at him before turning her gaze toward the darkened house again. “We need to be careful,” he told her. “Even though the house is dark, he may not be alone inside.”Eve nodded. “We need to be careful in our approach, in case he left an ambush of some sort for us,” Arec added. They crept closer to the house, and upon reaching the house, Arec spied that the front door was ajar. He stopped and pointed to it, alerting Eve, who nodded. After looking around and spotting no one in sight, they entered the house. “Do you think that other guy that Linda mentioned might have stayed behind tonight?” Eve asked as they searched the rooms on the ground floor. “Do you think he was the one who created whatever it was that changed Linda?” “I’m not sure,” Arec said. “I’m not even sure he is another wer
