“H-how? When? what?” “I got a better job that pays more and it will be good for us,; I had to take it” their dad said sitting down facing them both has they both stared at him. “What about Eva?” Aiden asked dropping the plate. His countenance dropped, slowing twisting into a saddened expression “She will have to learn how to live with your mom and she could come over during the holidays if she likes. Besides, we still have about a month here before we leave. You can still….. her dad said nonchalantly, happy about his new job. Ethan just sighed and asked “Are you going to tell Eva, you know, the exact reason why mom doesn’t love her?” “Yeah, are we going to leave her in complete control of a woman who doesn’t love her?” Aiden asked “I know your mom would change, she is not heartless and she just needs to learn to love Eva. J-just don’t tell her, at least not yet” her father said has he left to his room. Aiden and Ethan just stared at each other before proceeding to continue what they were doing before. Aiden and Ethan weren’t particularly close growing up. It was the love they both shared for their sister that bought them together… and now that she was no longer going to be with them like she before, things turned completely cold between them at home and very soon they won’t be in the same town. The sun rose once again shining brightly through each windows all over the city Eva woke up excited, knowing she had planned the day ahead of her; a walk to school with her brothers, her new class, to possibly make a new friend and then a nice lunch with Dad. Eva got up and hurried, going quickly to the bathroom to start her day, but before she could Luke knocked and told her She was needed downstairs by her mom. Eva came downstairs, responding to her mother’s call. “you called, mother.” “Yes, in fact I did. You’ll be changing schools.” She dropped the bombshell, not looking away from the nail job she was giving herself and leaving Eva in a state of shock. She was to now attend the same Academy as Luke and Lizzy. Eva stared for a moment before bursting into laughter. Her mom kept looking at her with no emotion. She asked, hiding her frustration and rage “What’s so funny? “Honestly, I’m not so sure anymore. I’m stuck between the fact that you thought I’d listen or that you still think I’m going to let you walk all over me” Eva said whilst trying to hold back her laugh. “well I’ll need someone to keep an eye on you. You seem to have… grown wings.” she said blowing the nail polish dry. “Now, you’re just being unbelievable; I have brothers at my school, mom” Eva stated, her patience reaching its limits. “Oh, they didn’t tell you? Hmm?” her mom said with a condescending smirk. Eva still stared at her with a hint of confusion and annoyance. “Your father got a new job in another state and they’d be leaving soon. Sorry, did I say soon? I think they were to leave tonight… I guess they didn’t tell you so you won’t be hurt” her mom added, her voice laced with contempt Eva was confused and shocked, not hearing a word her mother said afterwards . she asked herself if they would really leave without telling her? Even if they did, Aiden would tell her, right? Or could it be she is lying to get Eva to willingly change schools. but if she wanted to do that wouldn’t she have done that a long time ago? Eva didn’t know what to believe. She chose to wait for her brother hopefully she would prove her mom wrong. Eva stood at the door, waiting. She was supposed to have lunch with her dad, like always. She waited for hours and hours until Luke and Lizzy came home but she still refused to leave there. It was late. A few hours to midnight to be precise. Eva lay out a heavy and tired sigh as it dawned on her, finally believing that her brothers were truly gone. Her mom who was watching the whole time, picked her up from the ground to the table and dropped food in front of her. Her mother let out a soft sigh, her maternal instincts betraying her resolve to despise Eva. “I know you don’t like me and you know I don’t like you, but if you don’t eat you won’t have the energy to keep hating me. Don’t eat because I asked you too, at least eat so you can keep hating me” Eva mom said and left for her bedroom. Eva just sat there staring at her food and wondered “why does the world hate me being happy?”. She wondered why every time something she loved came her way, it always left… one way or another, when she needed it most. She listened to everything her mom said but she just couldn’t hate anyone or anything. This feeling she felt was familiar; that numbness in her heart, like she was further losing her emotions. She picked up her spoon and started eating. She had already lost her appetite but she wanted something to do other than think. When she finished, she took her plate to the kitchen, immediately washed it and went to her room. It was morning, the usual knock on the door signaling her it was time to get up. She reluctantly got up from bed, her feet dragging along the floor boards. She got ready and came down the stairs, Luke and Lizzy were surprised to see her in the state she was. Naturally, she would have left before then or they would leave before her but now she was eating breakfast with them “Are you feeling well new sissy? you don’t like sitting with us on the table?” Lizzy spoke in a curious voice As much as Eva wanted to remain quiet, this was Lizzy speaking; she couldn’t just ignore her. A slight smile slowly crept on her face and she spoke “Well I was thinking why don’t we start afresh, we’ll be attending the same school, isn’t that right” Eva said flashing an awkward smile at her before facing her food again. “The school bus has arrived” Eva’s mom said followed by a horn Luke picked up his bag and that of his sister and headed to the bus, Eva walked sluggishly into the bus. All the students were too busy chatting with each other to pay any attention to the fact that there was a new student amongst them. Eva just walked all the way to the back of the bus were a girl was sitting and just sat quietly. The girl glanced at her, Eva could feel eyes on her as she turned to the girl who now seemed to be sizing her up. “Is there a problem?” Eva asked The girl gasped, leaving a shocked expression on her face and suddenly, she shouted “Oh my God”That is brilliant” Eva said after thinking about it for a while.Jayne smiled “glad you think so”“But what are we going to change the files to?” Eva asked shooting a questioning looktowards Jayne.“if he thinks he can just play a woman because he feels he is smart, whydon’t we show him clever beats smart any day” Jayne said with a smirk on her face, showing Eva that she was going to turn the table on him.Eva stood up and hugged her, thanking her for helping and Jayne hugged her back and said“what her besties for?”They agreed to meet at the cafe close to the school before they parted waysEva got home to see her mom on the chair with a nurse checking her vitals , she greeted her mom and asked the nurse if she was going to get better soon, the nurse replied “yes”… But something felt off about her reply, she did fail to notice the shocked expression on her mom face when she asked about her healthEva just nodded to the nurse and left, she didn’t come down to eat dinner after she he
Eric smiled at her question “well, why don’t you figure out and tell me” Eric said before walking off.Eva just stood there trying to process everything she just heard, she shook her head and headed to class where she met Jayne sitting alone with a few books in front of her.Eva grabbed a chair and sat next to her, Jayne raised her head up and met Eva’s gaze but she just turned her head back to her books“Are you angry at me?” Eva asked“I thought you were smart” Jayne asked without lifting up her head“Ok, that was harsh, I am sorry I didn’t listen to you, those girls are jerks” Eva apologized with pleading eyes “I know right, they think the world revolves around them and the funny thing is who we all think is their lead is actually their slave” Eva added. Jayne turned to look at Eva said with a frustration. “why should I forgive you?” she askedEva just looked at her not knowing what to say “it is because I am your best friend?” Eva said after remembering their first encounter.Ja
Eva just watched the scene unfold knowing fully well that the syringe full of water wouldn’t affect her mom in any way, to her surprise Fredrick came to pick her up from the hospital and took her home. She got down from the car with a sigh, preparing for any drama that might present itself. She stepped into the house, the air felt a bit heavy as she laid eyes on Lizzy and Luke eating, there was a food already set up for her, the thought of what happened to her mom flashed before her eyes and she became suspicious, she felt sick and told him she can’t eat, she was a bit tired and would just go to sleep.Fredrick looked a bit upset but didn’t drag it. He nodded at her and she climbed up to her room.Today was a bit much. The weird thing happening to her got her thinking; it couldn’t have been a coincidence. Her mom collapsing, the new school she was still adapting to, That weird portal orwhatever that appeared today. “Maybe I’m finally losing it…” she thought as she laid in bed, starin
Eva walked back to her class before any other students then she opened her book, she then saw something written inside “Eva, don’t eat the last plate of food on the dinning at night”.Eva stared at the note, perplexed and taken aback. She wondered who could have written it or was someone playing a prank on her so soon? She tore the sheet of paper andthrew it away. “what a dumb prank” she thought to herself. She got home and everything continued as usual but her mom came home late whichmeant no dinner.Eva woke up late in the night. She got out of bed, feeling groggy and her mouth parched. She came down to grab some water. She came down the stairs, zoning in and out of sleep, just to see a plate of food in the middle of the dinning table. Her sleepiness vanished, her parched mouth drooled with saliva and her stomach rumbled. She was starving. She steppes forward. The world around her had vanished. She was like a sailor, smitten by the song and beauty of a siren. Her hand had almost gr
Eva looked at her with a mixture of scared and worried “what is wrong? are you alright?” Eva asked in worry.“You are so beautiful and I am Jayne and we have to be friends” Jayne said to Eva with ahuge smile and a stretched hand to shake her.Eva just looked at her with confusion “excuse me” she asked“I am Jayne your best friend and you are going to wipe the 4 squad of the leaders chart, I will show you around school when we get down but first what is my bestie’s name” Jayne said in one breath.Eva listened to this girl who just kept talking like she was in a speed contest and all she got from her was her name, her word to show her around school and her question. “I am Eva”…she said not wanting to start another contest. As the bus drove them to school, Jayne talked all the way till they arrived at the school gate.Everyone got Down from the bus and started familiarizing themselves with each other, Evacame down from the bus and was shocked to see the school building in front of her
