Chapter 2

Author: Shrimp Basque
Steve turned to the male students around him and spoke. “Keep an eye on him. Don’t let him cause any trouble!”

They shoved me so hard I slammed into the wall. A dull pain shot through my chest.

But inside, I was burning with anxiety.

These people really had no idea what was going on!

“I’m not lying to you. The cable has been swapped, and it really will snap!” I roared, trying to break through their human wall.

Steve’s gaze turned cold as he leaned close to my ear.

“Emery Sommer, don’t waste your energy. Your little cheap daughter is the one who insisted on stealing the spotlight. She brought this upon herself.

“Just stand here and watch. Watch how she falls from the sky.”

My gaze ran ice-cold.

Not only did he know there was a problem with the wire, he had actually orchestrated it himself!

Even though the person on stage was not my daughter, Anya, that was still a human life!

I snapped. “The person on stage isn’t my daughter. It’s someone else!”

Yet, he remained convinced that the person hanging in midair at that very moment was Anya!

“Who are you trying to fool? Everyone knows your daughter has been rehearsing all day and all night for this performance.

“If she’s not on stage right now, then who else could it be?”

“It’s…”

I did not know who was on stage right now, but that did not matter!

There were three minutes left. The climax was about to begin.

I had to figure something out.

Steve laughed sarcastically. “Can’t think of anything to say, can you?”

“Do you really think I’d believe you?”

Suddenly, an idea struck me. I shouted, “I’m Vera Sander’s husband. You have to stop the show!”

She was one of the school’s sponsors and a special guest at the anniversary celebration.

As long as she spoke up, the performance would definitely be stopped!

In my previous timeline, she had sacrificed me and my daughter to save herself, right at that moment, we had not completely fallen out yet.

I figured that if she knew in advance that an accident was going to happen, she would probably stop the performance.

A strange smile flashed across Steve’s face.

I immediately pulled out my phone and dialed Vera’s number.

A few students tried to grab my phone, but Steve stopped them.

I was puzzled, but by then the call had already connected.

I hurriedly shouted into the receiver. “Hello? Honey, stop the anniversary celebration right now!”

Vera’s hushed voice came through the phone, with the same symphony playing in the background.

“Hubby? What’s wrong? I’m watching the performance with the minister, Mr. Zimmer. Keep your voice down.”

“Honey, someone’s tampered with the cables. The people up there are going to fall to their deaths!

“Go find the principal right away! Tell them to stop this!”

Frantic, the veins on my forehead throbbed as I pinned my last hope on this woman.

However, Vera merely sighed softly. Her tone had a tinge of reproach and indifference.

“Emery, have you been too tired lately? Are you starting to imagine things?

“The safety cables were just inspected before the show. The school even hired a professional team too. There won’t be any problems.”

“No, that’s not true! There really is a problem! Steve, he…”

“All right, all right,” Vera interrupted me.

“Anya finally made it on stage. This is her moment to shine.

“Come on, even if you’re her father, stop being so suspicious all the time.

“I’m in the middle of discussing an important project with Mr. Zimmer right now. Stop causing a scene.

“Either sit back and enjoy the show, or go home, okay?”

By the time I finished giving my statement at the police station, the sky was already pitch dark.I dragged my exhausted body back home.Standing in front of Anya’s door, I took a deep breath before reaching for my keys. The door opened.Anya was curled up in the corner of her bed, her eyes red and swollen from crying. When she saw me come in, she jerked her head away and refused to look at me.“How much longer are you going to keep me locked up?“My dreams are ruined… completely ruined…“Dad, I hate you.”Hearing that word “hate,” my heart gave a sharp twinge. But I did not explain myself. I just turned on the TV and tuned to the local news channel. The news was airing a live report from the scene of the anniversary celebration accident. The footage of Vera, Steve, and Tina being taken away, along with Mr. Zimmer’s furious accusations, was replayed over and over.Anya froze. She stared intently at the screen, watching the close-up of the snapped wire and Charlotte being

“Mr. Sommer… he didn’t know… I… “Anya couldn’t make it, and I was afraid the show would be canceled, so I secretly put on her clothes to stand in for her…“No one knew it was me. They… they were trying to harm Anya…”I let out a long sigh. My back was already soaked with cold sweat. So that was how it was.Thank goodness, thank goodness I had laid down a cushion.Otherwise, this kind-hearted girl would have died today, and I would have carried that guilt for the rest of my life. After hearing his daughter’s words, Mr. Zimmer’s eyes welled up with tears. He gently patted his daughter’s hand. Then, he suddenly stood up and kicked Vera hard in the calf.“You beast!”Vera was knocked to her knees by the kick. She clutched her leg and screamed in agony.“Mr. Zimmer… please spare my life! I really didn’t know it was Charlotte!“If it had been Anya, would you have dared to kill her?!”Mr. Zimmer roared, “That’s your own flesh and blood! Even a tiger wouldn’t eat its own cubs. Yo

That single word, “Charlotte,” left Vera and Steve frozen in place.Vera’s mouth fell open. Her mind went completely blank.Charlotte?Mr. Zimmer’s only daughter, Charlotte Zimmer? She mechanically turned her head to look at me.I stood where I was, returning her gaze with a cold stare.“Vera, weren’t you crying so hard just a moment ago? Why aren’t you crying anymore?”On the stretcher, the school nurse removed the mask from the girl’s face. The face that was revealed was delicate and pale, but it was definitely not my daughter, Anya.It was Mr. Zimmer’s pride and joy, Charlotte Zimmer.Vera felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her whole body went limp, and she collapsed to the ground.Steve was so terrified his legs gave way, and he dropped straight to his knees.Tina covered her mouth, the malice in her eyes giving way to utter terror. How could it be Charlotte?Mr. Zimmer’s fierce eyes filled with tears as he scanned the room. His gaze was so fierce it seemed

The shove was so forceful that Vera staggered back several steps.“You lunatic! How dare you push me?”Vera clutched her chest, unable to believe what had happened.I ignored her and turned to shout at the school nurse. “Hurry up and help her! There’s an air cushion down there!”“Air cushion?”Vera and Steve spoke at the same time. Their voices filled with terror. The school nurses immediately rushed over to check on her.Due to the massive impact, a section of the stage floor had caved in. It was perfectly flat before.I rushed over and ripped away the decorative carpet covering it.Beneath it lay a thick layer of professional protective padding! After I went back in time, aside from locking Anya inside the house, I had also paid the stage crew to install an air cushion underneath.I was afraid that, just in case I could not stop the performance, someone else might use their power to exert pressure. The tragedy of my previous life must not be repeated.“She’s breathing! “Ah! Someone fell!”“Call an ambulance quickly! Someone’s been killed!”The two boys holding me were so shocked that they went stiff. Their grip loosened.I shoved them aside forcefully and stumbled toward the stage.Steve and Tina stood where they were, exchanging a glance as a smirk of triumph flashed in their eyes.Tina even muttered under her breath, “Finally dead, that eyesore.”I did not have time to pay attention to that vicious father-daughter duo and charged straight onto the stage. In the center of the stage, the figure that had fallen lay curled up on the ground, motionless.A circle of teachers and students had already gathered around, but no one dared to approach.“Everyone, step back! Don’t touch her!” I roared as I pushed through the crowd.Just as I was about to rush over to check on her injuries, a heart-wrenching voice instantly echoed throughout the venue via the microphone.“What a tragedy! What a terrible tragedy!”Vera rushed forward.Without so much

“Tina…” I gritted my teeth. My mouth filled with the taste of metallic blood.“What you’re doing is illegal! This is murder!”“Murder?” Tina grinned.“Sir, you can put anything you want in your mouth, but you can’t just say whatever comes to mind. This was just an unfortunate accident.“Mom’s got everything arranged. As long as Anya is dead and the compensation is paid, who’s going to investigate a broken steel wire?”The word “Mom” rolled off her tongue so effortlessly. My heart felt like it was being shredded in a meat grinder.“You call her ‘Mom’… Have you two been reunited for a long time?”“Of course.” Tina raised her eyebrows smugly.“Ever since I was born, Mom has doted on me the most.“She said that idiot Anya is just like you, dull and boring. I’m the only one she’s proud of.“You know what? I told her I wanted to see Anya fly high in the sky, only to crash and burn.“Mom agreed without a second thought and even praised me for being creative.”“Beasts… your whole
