Chapter 3

Author: Northern Puppy
"I'm ready," I said, meeting Raymond's eyes. "The old me died the day I found out about Adeline and Owen."

Raymond patted my shoulder. "Then I'll help you."

After leaving the cafe, I drove to an electronics store on the west side of town. The owner, Miles Farrow, had been a year behind me in college and owed me a favor.

"Got what you asked for."

He handed me a black velvet box. Inside was a rose-gold tie clip set with tiny diamonds.

"4K video, eight-hour battery life, and wireless transmission straight to your phone."

Miles lowered his voice.

"There's also this."

He handed me a pen.

"Press the side to start recording. It's almost impossible to notice. On the day of the gala, I'll be nearby to help receive the signal remotely."

"Thanks." I put everything away. "I'll send you the money."

"Quentin." His expression turned complicated. "Be careful."

I smiled. "Don't worry. I'm not the one who should be worried."

That night, Adeline came home at 2 a.m., reeking of alcohol. I helped her into bed, wiped her face, and took off her shoes.

Half-asleep, she grabbed my hand and muttered, "Honey… You're the best..."

"Get some sleep." I gently pulled my hand free and tucked the blanket around her.

As I turned away, I heard her mumble in her sleep.

"Owen... Stop..."

I switched off the light and closed the bedroom door behind me.

In the darkness, I pulled out my phone.

Owen had posted a new update on social media.

In the photo, he was wearing a Rolex and holding a glass of red wine. Behind him, the dazzling ceiling of the Starlight Ballroom at the Grand Monarch Hotel glowed overhead.

The caption read, [Some moments are worth waiting for. Three days to go.]

Using Adeline's old phone, I tapped Like.

A minute later, Owen sent a private message.

[Ms. Hemsley? Why'd you like that post? Didn't we agree not to make anything public yet?]

I mimicked her texting style.

[Couldn't help it. I miss you.]

He sent over a shy emoji immediately.

[I miss you, too. I got my suit fitted today. It looks amazing. Are you really going to announce it that day?]

[Of course. You deserve the best.]

-

Three days before the gala, I went to the Grand Monarch Hotel under the pretense of helping a friend scout wedding venues.

The ballroom was still being set up.

At the center of the stage sat two ornate gold-backed chairs decorated with intricate floral carvings.

A double seat of honor.

"This setup is incredible," my friend, Finn Ashby, said. "What company drops this much money on a party?"

"I wonder the same thing," I said quietly.

A man entered through the side door in black dress shoes, a charcoal-gray suit, and neatly trimmed hair. He stood with a tablet in his hand, calmly going over final details with the staff.

It was Owen.

He looked even younger in person than he did in the photos, tall and confident, with the kind of presence that naturally drew attention.

As for me, years of putting my family first had caught up with me. Somewhere along the way, I had gained weight and developed a belly.

So this was what Adeline meant when she said I couldn't compare to him.

"Turn the lights up another 30%," Owen said, his voice clear and confident. "Ms. Hemsley wants every camera shot to be crystal clear that night."

The staff member nodded immediately. "Of course, Mr. Wakefield."

Finn leaned closer and lowered his voice. "Who's that? Guy's got quite a presence."

I didn't answer.

Owen turned and let his gaze sweep across the room.

When it landed on us, he paused briefly before offering a polished professional smile.

"And you two are?"

"We're here looking at wedding venues," Finn said. "Are you setting up for a company event?"

"That's right. It's our company's tenth-anniversary celebration."

Owen walked over, his eyes lingering on my face for a fraction of a second longer than necessary.

"And you are?"

"Thompson."

"Mr. Thompson." He nodded. "This ballroom works beautifully for weddings, but we've reserved the entire space. If you'd like, I can recommend a few other ballrooms."

"No need, thank you." I smiled. "It's a beautiful setup. Your wife clearly put a lot of thought into it."

Owen's smile faltered.

My chest tightened slightly. "What did your mom say?""She said she wants to see me." Cole scrunched up his little face. "But I don't really want to. The last time she came, she smelled weird, and she was kind of mean."I ruffled his hair. "Then you don't have to see her. You can wait until you're ready.""Dad," Cole asked softly as he leaned against me, "did Mom do something really bad?"I was quiet for a moment before deciding to be honest. "Yes. She hurt me, and she hurt our family.""Then I don't want to love her anymore." Cole wrapped his arms around my neck. "I only love you, Dad."My eyes stung, but I didn't let the tears fall."Cole, you're allowed to love your mom, and you're allowed not to. That's your choice. The only thing I hope is that when you grow up, you never lose yourself because of someone else."Cole nodded, only half understanding. On the drive home, the sun was setting, bathing the city in golden light. While waiting at a red light, I happened to glanc

I laid everything out point by point, my voice calm and even, as if I were presenting a report that had nothing to do with me.With each detail, more color drained from Adeline's face.In the end, the ruling was nearly one-sided.The divorce was finalized. Cole was placed in my custody. The assets were divided 70-30, with the bigger chunk awarded to me. Adeline was ordered to pay substantial child support, along with compensation for emotional distress. As we stepped out of the courthouse, Adeline hurried after me."Quentin..." She stepped in front of me, blocking my path. There was desperation in her eyes I had never seen before. "I know I was wrong. Owen took my money and left. Can we start over?"I stopped and looked at her.I had loved that face for more than ten years. We had shared cheap meals that cost only a few bucks, squeezed into a damp basement apartment, and stayed up late celebrating our first customer like we had just won the lottery. And in the end, she had de

"Quentin..." Adeline tried to walk toward me, her voice tinged with desperation.I took a step back, avoiding the hand she reached out to me."Don't touch me." My voice wasn't loud, but it was cold enough. "Whatever part of me still cared about you died the day I found your texts with Owen."Employees had already started gathering their belongings and heading for the exits. The atmosphere was too awkward, too humiliating. What had begun as a festive company celebration had turned into a public affair scandal.Just then, the ballroom doors swung open, and several people in official uniforms walked in. The one in front displayed his credentials. "Ms. Hemsley, we're with IRS Criminal Investigation. We're looking into allegations of tax fraud and misuse of company funds. We need you to come with us."Adeline's legs gave out beneath her, and she nearly collapsed.Owen let out a shrill shout. "Who are you people? You can't just…!""Mr. Wakefield," another investigator interrupted,

My voice carried through the microphone, clear enough to reach every corner of the ballroom.A suffocating silence settled over the room. Hundreds of people sat frozen in place. It was so quiet that even breathing seemed to have stopped. Eyes darted back and forth between me, Adeline, and Owen; everyone was trying to understand what was happening.Owen was the first to react. The happiness on his face drained away, replaced by a sickly pallor. His lips trembled as he instinctively stepped back, only for Adeline to catch his wrist without thinking. Under the spotlight, the gesture was impossible to miss.Adeline finally found her voice."Quentin... What are you doing here?"Her words came out dry and shaky, thick with disbelief."Why wouldn't I be here?" I smiled and looked toward the employees below the stage. "I'm the majority owner. The company's been around for ten years, and I've never attended a single anniversary gala. This year, I decided I'd finally come see one for m

Adeline said into the microphone, "Tonight, I'd like to take this opportunity to say something to Owen."She turned toward Owen and took his hand. "Thank you. I wouldn't be where I am today without you."Owen's eyes reddened, and his voice caught with emotion. "Adeline..."Someone in the audience shouted, "Kiss her!"Soon, others joined in, chanting and cheering.Adeline laughed and shook her head, but a moment later, they shared a brief kiss in front of everyone. The ballroom erupted.Owen took the microphone. His voice was clear, though slightly unsteady."Actually... There's one more piece of good news we'd like to share with everyone tonight."He paused, wearing a smile so full of happiness that it was almost painful to look at."We're...getting married."The room fell silent for a single second. Then applause and cheers exploded through the ballroom, nearly shaking the ceiling. On the giant screen behind them, the camera zoomed in tighter and tighter. The affection

"Quentin? Is that really you?" Eli stared at me in surprise. "What happened to you?""You mean how I ended up looking like this?" I finished for him with a faint smile. "Today, I want you to help me look like myself again."Three hours later, the man staring back at me from the mirror felt almost unfamiliar. My hair was neatly cut. My beard was gone. The sharp lines of my face had returned, and there was a focus in my eyes I hadn't seen in years. The black velvet suit fit perfectly, tailored just enough to emphasize my frame without looking forced."You were always this handsome." Eli's eyes turned red. "These past few years... You've been through a lot.""I haven't suffered." I held my own gaze in the mirror. "I've just been asleep for too long. It's time to wake up."At 6 p.m., the Grand Monarch Hotel was already buzzing with activity.Outside the Starlight Ballroom, employees gathered in formalwear, chatting and taking selfies."I heard the grand prize is a trip to Utonia f

"Cole's activity classes got more expensive," I said while opening the household ledger. "There's not much left in our joint account. Is the company doing okay?""The company's fine." It was subtle, but I caught it."My boss, Ms. Hemsley, deserves the credit," Owen corrected gently. "I'm just helping make it happen.""Ms. Hemsley?" I asked casually. "Is she single? Renting out a ballroom this big and setting up a double seat of honor... I figured it was for her husband."The r
