Chapter 4

Penulis: Northern Puppy
It was subtle, but I caught it.

"My boss, Ms. Hemsley, deserves the credit," Owen corrected gently. "I'm just helping make it happen."

"Ms. Hemsley?" I asked casually. "Is she single? Renting out a ballroom this big and setting up a double seat of honor... I figured it was for her husband."

The room fell quiet for a few seconds.

Owen looked at me, his expression shifting with curiosity, caution, and a trace of smug satisfaction he couldn't quite conceal.

"I don't really know much about Ms. Hemsley's personal life." He turned away and addressed the staff. "I'm going to double-check the menu. I'll leave you gentlemen to it."

Then he walked off, the crisp click of his dress shoes echoing across the ballroom.

Finn bumped my shoulder. "Quentin, what was that about? Those were some strange questions."

"Just making conversation." I pulled my gaze away. "Come on. Let's look at the other ballrooms."

We headed for the elevator.

Just before the doors closed, I glanced back one last time.

Owen was standing in the center of the stage, looking down at his tablet.

The lights from the starry ceiling spilled across him, wrapping him in a soft, almost unreal glow. Then, he lifted his head and looked toward the elevator.

Our eyes met one final time through the narrowing gap between the doors.

He smiled.

The expression carried the quiet confidence of someone who believed he had already won. There was even a hint of pity in it.

The elevator started down.

"You know him?" Finn asked.

"No." I watched the floor numbers light up one by one. "But we'll be getting acquainted soon enough."

That evening, Adeline came home unusually early, looking irritated.

"Everything okay?" I asked, ladling soup into a bowl for her.

"It's nothing." She rubbed her temples. "Just a minor issue at the company. It'll be handled soon."

"That's good." I slid the bowl toward her. "By the way, I went to the Grand Monarch Hotel today."

She paused. "What were you doing there?"

"A friend wanted to check out wedding venues." My tone stayed casual. "I saw people setting up the Starlight Ballroom. That's for your anniversary gala, right?"

"Yeah," she said hesitantly.

"The double seat of honor is a nice touch." I looked at her. "Was that your idea?"

Adeline set down her spoon. "That was the event planner's idea. Don't start reading into things."

"I'm not reading into anything." I smiled. "I just thought if we ever renewed our vows, we could borrow something like that."

The tension in her expression eased, and she reached for my hand.

"Once the company goes public, we'll have the biggest wedding imaginable."

Another promise.

I squeezed her hand in return. Her palm felt warm, but her fingertips were cold.

"Oh, right. I was cleaning the study yesterday and noticed some photos on your old laptop."

I kept my tone light.

"They looked like company outings or team-building events. There was one guy who seemed familiar. Wasn't he the one who dropped off documents here once?"

Adeline's grip tightened slightly.

"Which guy?"

"The tall one with the slightly wavy hair. He looked pretty capable." I blinked innocently. "I think his name was Owen?"

Silence settled over the table.

After a long pause, she let go of my hand, and her voice returned to its usual calm.

"That's Owen from Administration. He's very capable. Why are you asking about him all of a sudden?"

"I just thought he was a good-looking guy." I stood and started gathering the dishes, keeping my back to her. "It's reassuring to know you have employees like that helping you."

She didn't say another word.

I carried the dishes into the kitchen and turned on the faucet. The rush of water drowned out the sound of my heartbeat.

That night, Adeline slept soundly.

I got out of bed, opened the hidden compartment, and took out the tie-clip camera. Then I attached it to the inside of the black coat I planned to wear the next day.

-

The day of the gala arrived.

At 7 a.m., I dropped Cole off at my parents' house.

I stood there for a long time, watching him run into my dad's arms.

Then I turned around, got into my car, and headed for a private styling studio.

The owner was Eli Spence, an old classmate of mine.

My chest tightened slightly. "What did your mom say?""She said she wants to see me." Cole scrunched up his little face. "But I don't really want to. The last time she came, she smelled weird, and she was kind of mean."I ruffled his hair. "Then you don't have to see her. You can wait until you're ready.""Dad," Cole asked softly as he leaned against me, "did Mom do something really bad?"I was quiet for a moment before deciding to be honest. "Yes. She hurt me, and she hurt our family.""Then I don't want to love her anymore." Cole wrapped his arms around my neck. "I only love you, Dad."My eyes stung, but I didn't let the tears fall."Cole, you're allowed to love your mom, and you're allowed not to. That's your choice. The only thing I hope is that when you grow up, you never lose yourself because of someone else."Cole nodded, only half understanding. On the drive home, the sun was setting, bathing the city in golden light. While waiting at a red light, I happened to glanc

I laid everything out point by point, my voice calm and even, as if I were presenting a report that had nothing to do with me.With each detail, more color drained from Adeline's face.In the end, the ruling was nearly one-sided.The divorce was finalized. Cole was placed in my custody. The assets were divided 70-30, with the bigger chunk awarded to me. Adeline was ordered to pay substantial child support, along with compensation for emotional distress. As we stepped out of the courthouse, Adeline hurried after me."Quentin..." She stepped in front of me, blocking my path. There was desperation in her eyes I had never seen before. "I know I was wrong. Owen took my money and left. Can we start over?"I stopped and looked at her.I had loved that face for more than ten years. We had shared cheap meals that cost only a few bucks, squeezed into a damp basement apartment, and stayed up late celebrating our first customer like we had just won the lottery. And in the end, she had de

"Quentin..." Adeline tried to walk toward me, her voice tinged with desperation.I took a step back, avoiding the hand she reached out to me."Don't touch me." My voice wasn't loud, but it was cold enough. "Whatever part of me still cared about you died the day I found your texts with Owen."Employees had already started gathering their belongings and heading for the exits. The atmosphere was too awkward, too humiliating. What had begun as a festive company celebration had turned into a public affair scandal.Just then, the ballroom doors swung open, and several people in official uniforms walked in. The one in front displayed his credentials. "Ms. Hemsley, we're with IRS Criminal Investigation. We're looking into allegations of tax fraud and misuse of company funds. We need you to come with us."Adeline's legs gave out beneath her, and she nearly collapsed.Owen let out a shrill shout. "Who are you people? You can't just…!""Mr. Wakefield," another investigator interrupted,

My voice carried through the microphone, clear enough to reach every corner of the ballroom.A suffocating silence settled over the room. Hundreds of people sat frozen in place. It was so quiet that even breathing seemed to have stopped. Eyes darted back and forth between me, Adeline, and Owen; everyone was trying to understand what was happening.Owen was the first to react. The happiness on his face drained away, replaced by a sickly pallor. His lips trembled as he instinctively stepped back, only for Adeline to catch his wrist without thinking. Under the spotlight, the gesture was impossible to miss.Adeline finally found her voice."Quentin... What are you doing here?"Her words came out dry and shaky, thick with disbelief."Why wouldn't I be here?" I smiled and looked toward the employees below the stage. "I'm the majority owner. The company's been around for ten years, and I've never attended a single anniversary gala. This year, I decided I'd finally come see one for m

Adeline said into the microphone, "Tonight, I'd like to take this opportunity to say something to Owen."She turned toward Owen and took his hand. "Thank you. I wouldn't be where I am today without you."Owen's eyes reddened, and his voice caught with emotion. "Adeline..."Someone in the audience shouted, "Kiss her!"Soon, others joined in, chanting and cheering.Adeline laughed and shook her head, but a moment later, they shared a brief kiss in front of everyone. The ballroom erupted.Owen took the microphone. His voice was clear, though slightly unsteady."Actually... There's one more piece of good news we'd like to share with everyone tonight."He paused, wearing a smile so full of happiness that it was almost painful to look at."We're...getting married."The room fell silent for a single second. Then applause and cheers exploded through the ballroom, nearly shaking the ceiling. On the giant screen behind them, the camera zoomed in tighter and tighter. The affection

"Quentin? Is that really you?" Eli stared at me in surprise. "What happened to you?""You mean how I ended up looking like this?" I finished for him with a faint smile. "Today, I want you to help me look like myself again."Three hours later, the man staring back at me from the mirror felt almost unfamiliar. My hair was neatly cut. My beard was gone. The sharp lines of my face had returned, and there was a focus in my eyes I hadn't seen in years. The black velvet suit fit perfectly, tailored just enough to emphasize my frame without looking forced."You were always this handsome." Eli's eyes turned red. "These past few years... You've been through a lot.""I haven't suffered." I held my own gaze in the mirror. "I've just been asleep for too long. It's time to wake up."At 6 p.m., the Grand Monarch Hotel was already buzzing with activity.Outside the Starlight Ballroom, employees gathered in formalwear, chatting and taking selfies."I heard the grand prize is a trip to Utonia f

The contact name read "My Owen." My breath caught. A dull ringing filled my ears, and for a moment, everything around me felt distant and unreal. Before I could stop myself, my thumb was already moving across the screen.I couldn't tell whether Adeline Hemsley was overly confident or simply tru

"I'm ready," I said, meeting Raymond's eyes. "The old me died the day I found out about Adeline and Owen."Raymond patted my shoulder. "Cole's activity classes got more expensive," I said while opening the household ledger. "There's not much left in our joint account. Is the company doing okay?""The company's fine." Adeline barely glanced at the numbers. "The gala budget was approved a while ago. If we're short, put it on the cre
