Chapter 2

Author: Northern Puppy
"Cole's activity classes got more expensive," I said while opening the household ledger. "There's not much left in our joint account. Is the company doing okay?"

"The company's fine." Adeline barely glanced at the numbers. "The gala budget was approved a while ago. If we're short, put it on the credit card. I'll transfer more money into the account next month."

"The gala... Is it at the Grand Monarch Hotel?"

"Yeah. The Starlight Ballroom." Something flickered in her eyes. "How'd you know?"

"I saw an ad when I drove by the other day." I lowered my gaze. "I heard it's expensive."

"This is the company's tenth anniversary. It should look the part." She wrapped her arms around me. "Once things settle down, I'll take you and Cole to Silver Coast."

Another promise.

"Oh, right." I looked up. "Can I see the event schedule? It's kind of funny that I don't even know what our own company's anniversary gala looks like."

After a few seconds of silence, she said, "Sure. I'll send it to you."

A minute later, the digital event schedule and seating chart arrived.

"Just take a look. Don't forward it to anyone."

"I know."

She rose and headed for the shower.

I unlocked my phone and pulled up the gala seating chart.

Head Table 01: CEO Adeline Hemsley

Head Table 02: Owen Wakefield, Administration Department

Administration Department. So he worked at the company, right there under her nose.

I took screenshots, uploaded them to the cloud, and backed them up on an encrypted drive.

As I passed the study, I noticed the door was slightly ajar. Her old laptop sat on the desk, with the power light still on.

I pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Her laptop wasn't password-protected.

The folders were a mess, and I clicked into one labeled "Work Backup 2021."

As I was closing it, something caught my eye: a strangely named folder called O.

I double-clicked the file, and a password prompt filled the screen. I tried her birthday, my birthday, and the company's founding date. None of them worked.

Then, I entered Owen Wakefield.

The folder opened.

It was full of photos.

There were dozens of them. Maybe hundreds.

Team dinners, business trips, after-parties, hotel rooms. The photos spanned three years, and the same man appeared in every frame. He looked young, handsome, and effortlessly confident.

In other photos, Adeline's hand rested on his shoulder in some photos and around his waist.

My fingernails dug into my palms, leaving crescent-shaped marks, but I didn't feel a thing.

I plugged in a flash drive and started copying everything.

The progress bar inched forward, from 1% to 5%, then 10%.

At some point, the bathroom door suddenly opened, and footsteps headed toward the study. I pulled out the flash drive, closed the laptop, and turned around with a smile.

"All done? Your pajamas are on the bed."

Adeline stopped in the doorway, water dripping from her hair as her eyes flicked toward the laptop. "What are you doing in here?"

"Looking for Cole's vaccination record. His preschool needs it tomorrow."

I held up a small booklet. "Your old laptop was still running. Seemed like a waste of electricity."

"I forgot to shut it down." She walked over and pressed the power button. "Don't use my computer anymore. There are confidential company files on it."

"Got it, Ms. Hemsley." I laughed, gave her a light pat, and walked out of the study.

The flash drive went into a hidden compartment at the very bottom of my desk drawer.

There was already a collection growing there: screenshots of transfers, screen recordings of chat histories, and phone numbers from unknown contacts.

I needed more.

A few days later, I met with Raymond Blythe. He was my college roommate, now one of the city's best divorce attorneys.

After listening to the short version of everything, he sat in silence for a long time.

"Are you sure you want to sue?"

"I'm sure." I watched the traffic outside the window. "I want her to pay for what she did."

"Alright." Raymond pulled out a notebook. "If you want to take someone down, you hit them where it hurts."

"And where's that for her?"

"The company." Raymond paused with his pen above the page. "She's the founder, but the ownership is marital property. If you can prove marital misconduct, you'll have a huge advantage when it comes to dividing assets. It could even affect control of the company."

He looked at me steadily.

"But this road is long, and it's going to get ugly. You need to be ready for that."

My chest tightened slightly. "What did your mom say?""She said she wants to see me." Cole scrunched up his little face. "But I don't really want to. The last time she came, she smelled weird, and she was kind of mean."I ruffled his hair. "Then you don't have to see her. You can wait until you're ready.""Dad," Cole asked softly as he leaned against me, "did Mom do something really bad?"I was quiet for a moment before deciding to be honest. "Yes. She hurt me, and she hurt our family.""Then I don't want to love her anymore." Cole wrapped his arms around my neck. "I only love you, Dad."My eyes stung, but I didn't let the tears fall."Cole, you're allowed to love your mom, and you're allowed not to. That's your choice. The only thing I hope is that when you grow up, you never lose yourself because of someone else."Cole nodded, only half understanding. On the drive home, the sun was setting, bathing the city in golden light. While waiting at a red light, I happened to glanc

I laid everything out point by point, my voice calm and even, as if I were presenting a report that had nothing to do with me.With each detail, more color drained from Adeline's face.In the end, the ruling was nearly one-sided.The divorce was finalized. Cole was placed in my custody. The assets were divided 70-30, with the bigger chunk awarded to me. Adeline was ordered to pay substantial child support, along with compensation for emotional distress. As we stepped out of the courthouse, Adeline hurried after me."Quentin..." She stepped in front of me, blocking my path. There was desperation in her eyes I had never seen before. "I know I was wrong. Owen took my money and left. Can we start over?"I stopped and looked at her.I had loved that face for more than ten years. We had shared cheap meals that cost only a few bucks, squeezed into a damp basement apartment, and stayed up late celebrating our first customer like we had just won the lottery. And in the end, she had de

"Quentin..." Adeline tried to walk toward me, her voice tinged with desperation.I took a step back, avoiding the hand she reached out to me."Don't touch me." My voice wasn't loud, but it was cold enough. "Whatever part of me still cared about you died the day I found your texts with Owen."Employees had already started gathering their belongings and heading for the exits. The atmosphere was too awkward, too humiliating. What had begun as a festive company celebration had turned into a public affair scandal.Just then, the ballroom doors swung open, and several people in official uniforms walked in. The one in front displayed his credentials. "Ms. Hemsley, we're with IRS Criminal Investigation. We're looking into allegations of tax fraud and misuse of company funds. We need you to come with us."Adeline's legs gave out beneath her, and she nearly collapsed.Owen let out a shrill shout. "Who are you people? You can't just…!""Mr. Wakefield," another investigator interrupted,

My voice carried through the microphone, clear enough to reach every corner of the ballroom.A suffocating silence settled over the room. Hundreds of people sat frozen in place. It was so quiet that even breathing seemed to have stopped. Eyes darted back and forth between me, Adeline, and Owen; everyone was trying to understand what was happening.Owen was the first to react. The happiness on his face drained away, replaced by a sickly pallor. His lips trembled as he instinctively stepped back, only for Adeline to catch his wrist without thinking. Under the spotlight, the gesture was impossible to miss.Adeline finally found her voice."Quentin... What are you doing here?"Her words came out dry and shaky, thick with disbelief."Why wouldn't I be here?" I smiled and looked toward the employees below the stage. "I'm the majority owner. The company's been around for ten years, and I've never attended a single anniversary gala. This year, I decided I'd finally come see one for m

Adeline said into the microphone, "Tonight, I'd like to take this opportunity to say something to Owen."She turned toward Owen and took his hand. "Thank you. I wouldn't be where I am today without you."Owen's eyes reddened, and his voice caught with emotion. "Adeline..."Someone in the audience shouted, "Kiss her!"Soon, others joined in, chanting and cheering.Adeline laughed and shook her head, but a moment later, they shared a brief kiss in front of everyone. The ballroom erupted.Owen took the microphone. His voice was clear, though slightly unsteady."Actually... There's one more piece of good news we'd like to share with everyone tonight."He paused, wearing a smile so full of happiness that it was almost painful to look at."We're...getting married."The room fell silent for a single second. Then applause and cheers exploded through the ballroom, nearly shaking the ceiling. On the giant screen behind them, the camera zoomed in tighter and tighter. The affection

"Quentin? Is that really you?" Eli stared at me in surprise. "What happened to you?""You mean how I ended up looking like this?" I finished for him with a faint smile. "Today, I want you to help me look like myself again."Three hours later, the man staring back at me from the mirror felt almost unfamiliar. My hair was neatly cut. My beard was gone. The sharp lines of my face had returned, and there was a focus in my eyes I hadn't seen in years. The black velvet suit fit perfectly, tailored just enough to emphasize my frame without looking forced."You were always this handsome." Eli's eyes turned red. "These past few years... You've been through a lot.""I haven't suffered." I held my own gaze in the mirror. "I've just been asleep for too long. It's time to wake up."At 6 p.m., the Grand Monarch Hotel was already buzzing with activity.Outside the Starlight Ballroom, employees gathered in formalwear, chatting and taking selfies."I heard the grand prize is a trip to Utonia f

It was subtle, but I caught it."My boss, Ms. Hemsley, deserves the credit," Owen corrected gently. "I'm just helping make it happen.""Ms. Hemsley?" I asked casually. "Is she single? Renting out a ballroom this big and setting up a double seat of honor... I figured it was for her husband."The r

"I'm ready," I said, meeting Raymond's eyes. "The old me died the day I found out about Adeline and Owen."Raymond patted my shoulder.
