Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
Seth's POV

After hearing that, Regina snorted. "Did you hear that? Lucas is so much more understanding than you. Forget it. I'll let it slide since you didn't do it on purpose. As long as you make me a postpartum recovery meal right now, I'll forgive you."

Of course, he could afford to be magnanimous. He wasn't the victim. I rolled my eyes and remained silent.

Lucas sighed enviously. "Kids from poor families grow up fast. They're good at looking after others, too. Unlike me, who can't do anything right and even needs a pregnant woman like you to cater to me."

He made it sound as though he was praising me, but he was really just finding another way to show off how good Regina was to him.

Regina didn't pick up on his hidden jab. In fact, she giggled. "I think you're wonderful. You're just not good at cooking. However, that's okay.

"Seth can cook for us. He's really good at it. You should taste his food later."

I rolled my eyes and spat out, "I'm busy."

The cheerful laughter on the other end of the phone ground to a halt, and she demanded, "Are you still upset about what happened with your mother? I've already agreed to give you a child to make it up to you, so why are you and your mom still not satisfied?

"Look, I'll send you another card. So, name your price."

Regina had borne Lucas a child unconditionally. Yet, when it came to me, her lawful husband, it was treated like some kind of favor, and even that came with conditions.

To be honest, this was how we had always been. If I wanted her to do even the smallest thing for me, I had to be of value to her first. Or else, the only time she'd give me anything was when she'd made a mistake and wanted to make it up to me.

I used to think that she was simply born that way, that she was a cold, transactional person who always prioritized self-interest above all else. That was until Lucas came along, and I got to see a completely different side of her.

Regina didn't need a reason to be good to him. She simply wanted to offer him every beautiful thing in the world on a silver platter.

It hit me then that love couldn't be forced. Unfortunately, I'd come to this realization far too late, and it cost Mom her life.

"Seth, if you don't speak up, I'll call your mother and ask her myself!"

Regina's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I responded apathetically, "Mom's dead, so you can save your breath."

Regina was taken aback for a moment. "Didn't you tell me my mother-in-law was fine, Lucas? What's going on?" she fretted.

Lucas sighed. "Mrs. Marsh is perfectly fine. When she left, she was so angry that she scratched my neck. Don't blame him for lying; he's just jealous of how close you and I are.

"It's normal for a man to be possessive. As his wife, you should be more understanding of him."

Regina didn't even bother to check whether it was true. "I can't believe you'd curse your own mother just because you're jealous, Seth!"

Then, she turned around and comforted Lucas. "Why didn't you tell me that you were injured?"

"Mrs. Marsh is your mother-in-law. I was afraid I'd put you in a difficult spot, so I kept it from you."

"Lucas, you're so considerate it breaks my heart..."

I didn't stick around for more and hung up on her.

Once everything was taken care of, I returned home with Mom's urn, intending to pack a few things and leave.

The moment I stepped inside, I found Regina's mother, Sharon Maren, on the couch with a hardened expression.

As soon as she saw me, she snarled, "Seth, you're dirt poor, and now you can't even keep my daughter on a tight leash! How could you let her get back with that scumbag? You're a complete waste of space!"

Sharon tossed her phone at me. I caught it and played the video on the screen.

"Ms. Morgan, we've never heard any news of you tying the knot, yet you've suddenly welcomed a baby boy. Did you get pregnant out of wedlock, or are you following the latest trend of having a baby without keeping the father around?"

In the face of the reporter's questions, Regina, who was lying in her hospital bed, linked arms with Lucas. "Actually, I've been married for seven years, and this is the baby's father, Lucas Jenson."

Seth's POVRegina had committed a crime, and she'd had to go to prison to atone for her own actions. Unwilling to listen to her endless rambling any longer, I cut her off. "That's enough. I don't want to hear it. We're over. There's no going back. From now on, don't call me unless it's about the divorce!""Hold on, Seth!" Regina panicked, afraid I wouldn't hear her out. "If you're upset about that child's existence, I can give him up for adoption. Can you come back and give me another chance? Didn't your mother always want to see you have a child while she was alive? We can have one of our own and make her dream come true!"Irritated, I hung up on her.Regina's name popped up on my screen again in no time. I couldn't be bothered to listen to another word from her. I messaged my lawyer and left Regina's case entirely in his hands. I was determined to get divorced. …A month after Mom passed away, I still hadn't come to terms with her death. Every corner of this house was fill

  • My Wife's Newborn, My Mother's Coffin   Chapter 9

Seth's POVI had left Mom's death in the hands of the cops and entrusted the divorce proceedings to my lawyer. Regina, the woman I'd once loved with every fiber of my being, was someone I no longer wanted to see, not even for a second. If it weren't for the pending divorce lawsuit that made cutting contact impossible, I wouldn't have even answered this call. Regina wasn't upset in the slightest. In fact, she actually apologized to me for once. "I'm terribly sorry about what happened to your mother, but I never intended to take her life. Even though I didn't particularly like her, I never slighted her when it came to gifts. "Winona's gone now, but the living still have to carry on with their lives, don't they? She would want you to be happy, too. She also—" "That's enough!" I snapped, cutting her off. "It was precisely because she wanted me to be happy so badly that she endured everything for my sake, only to end up dead by your hands! Regina Morgan, are you telling me all this

Seth's POVMom told me she was getting old and didn't want to get in my way. Last time, when Dad's grave was dug up, no one was more heartbroken or devastated than Mom. Yet, she knew I couldn't let go of Regina, so she comforted me and even made excuses for Regina. "Reggie wants to be childfree, and us dinosaurs just don't understand your modern trends. Maybe your mother-in-law has been pressuring her too much to have a baby, and she's been bottling up her frustration for a while. That's probably why her reaction was so extreme."At the end of the day, you two are married. If you have an issue, you should talk it out and work it through. You can't keep giving each other the silent treatment like this. Hurry up and find an excuse to make up with her already." Looking at her white hair, I refused to compromise. I was a good employee at work, a dutiful husband at home, and a son-in-law Sharon could count on. However, the one role I'd failed at was being a good son. I couldn'

Third-person POVHowever, Regina was well aware that it was wrong. She told herself time and time again that Lucas was a liar, yet she still couldn't help but believe him.The moment she learned that Lucas' days were numbered, all her lingering resentment dissolved into smoke. All she wanted was to put an end to everything once and for all, to help him one final time and, in doing so, help herself move on, too. Little did she know, she'd been deceived once again.Lucas was perfectly fine. Everything he'd done had been nothing more than an elaborate scheme to trick her into having his child. Because of that lie, she'd given Seth the silent treatment for nine months, and she hadn't even dared to reach out to him. She'd wanted to wait until the dust settled. Regina had thought that since Seth knew about her history with Lucas and was still willing to marry her, what difference would one more child make? She'd firmly believed that even at their wedding seven years ago, Seth woul

  • My Wife's Newborn, My Mother's Coffin   Chapter 6

Third-person POV"What? My mother-in-law is dead?" Regina stared at the officers before her in disbelief. She took one look at Lucas, who was standing beside her, and instantly put her guard up. "When did my mother-in-law pass away?"The police officer frowned. "Last Monday."Regina scoffed. "Nonsense. My mother-in-law was perfectly fine last Monday. She even had enough energy to throw hands. "Did he hire you to pretend to be cops? Where'd you buy your uniforms? They're pretty convincing." Regina completely relaxed, assuming they were actors hired by Seth. Seth had made so many threats yesterday that she'd actually thought he was going to leave her. Yet, after only a night, he was already so impatient that he'd sent people over to put on a show. Lost in her own reverie, she failed to notice that Lucas' face had turned ghastly white. He, who was usually so talkative, was dead silent at this moment, wishing he could become invisible. Noticing she was all smiles, the poli

Seth's POVRegina was dumbfounded. She seized my arm. "What on earth is wrong with you?"I had brought up divorce so many times, yet she still thought I was just throwing a tantrum. "I'm serious. I wish you both well. After seven years apart, you've finally found your way back to each other."I'd once trashed our home in an attempt to keep Regina and Lucas apart. She'd called me immature, put me under house arrest for a week, and took off on a trip with Lucas instead. Now that I was sincerely wishing them well, instead of being relieved, Regina scowled at me. "I've already apologized and given you gifts, Seth. If you're still unsatisfied, just tell me what you want, okay?" Having said that, she suddenly remembered something and muttered to herself, "Hold on… You would never be this cruel to me. This must be your mother's idea!"Regina was furious, and she dialed Mom's number. However, the phone in my pocket began to ring. Regina still thought I'd hidden Mom somewhere. "Seth
