GIANNA
~•~ “Do you have anything against LA?” Jack walked into my office without knocking. I hissed, not bothering to look up at him. “I could be naked.” Jack scoffed. “You have a bathroom right there. Why would you be naked in the office?” “I knock before I enter yours.” “You don't have to.” “That doesn't matter. Start knocking or I'll start locking my door.” I didn't look up but I could feel him staring at me. “Fine. I'll try to cultivate the habit of knocking before I enter an office that is supposed to be open in the first place.” He relented sarcastically, then paused. “Wait, you distracted me on purpose right?” I didn't respond because it was true. “This makes me even more curious.” He sat on the seat opposite mine. “Is something chasing you in LA? You were always uncomfortable in public and you hurried to come back to San Diego.” “You're overthinking.” I tried to dismiss his suspicions but Jack was smarter than that. “Don't try to gaslight me. If you don't want to tell me, it's fine.” I bit down on my bottom lip, finally looking up at him. Jack was a very good friend and he never pried into my life. He knew I wanted to keep my past as that so he didn't ask many questions. He cared for my kids like they were his but he didn't even know who their father was. It was easy for him to find out if he wanted to but he didn't. I'd kept my past away from him for more than five years and I intended to keep it that way. I didn't like thinking about what happened back then. Even more so, I hated talking about it. I had a new and different life now. It was a lot better than what I had. I was a better woman. There was no need to reopen old wounds. “Is it because of that pervert who was recording you?” He questioned. I chuckled. That man wasn't a pervert. He was rather respectful when I told him to delete my pictures. He was most likely someone who knew me as Mrs Baker. I was used to being photographed in public. He wasn't the first. “Of course not. If I was that bothered by him, I would have handed him over to the police.” I smiled, reassuring him that he was nothing. Despite how big our company was becoming, Jack wasn't used to the paparazzi. He was most especially uncomfortable with being recorded randomly. Well, I suppose everyone was. He opened his mouth to speak again but I beat him to it. “LA is a big place where many celebrities reside so they're used to taking pictures of them. Maybe they recognized us or something. I saw your picture in his phone too when I was asking him to delete them.” “Really? Why didn't you tell me? I would have handled him myself!” “I think you're missing the point.” Jack kissed his teeth and took a deep breath. “That doesn't explain why you're uncomfortable with the place.” “I'm not.” I lied through my teeth. “It's just quite hard to adjust to a new place.” “Are you sure? Cause we'll be going back next week.” “What? Why?” By now he had all my attention. “Was the client not satisfied?” “He was. He was so satisfied to the point that he referred us to his buddy even if we haven't carried out the plans yet.” I let out a huge breath. I had just lied to him that I wasn't used to LA which was why I was acting weird in the city. How the hell was I supposed to decline to go with him? “Why do you need me there with you? Why do they even need physical meetings? What happened to online meetings?” “Come on, Gianna. That's what the client wants so we have to deliver. Besides, you're better at handling clients than I am. They like to walk all over me.” “So you know?” I glared at him. Clients loved pushing him to find out how much they could get away with and he always allowed it. Jack scratched his head sheepishly. “I'm quite self-aware.” I kissed my teeth. “Gianna…” he tried coaxing me. “We're going to branch out there anyway. It's better if you get used to the environment now.” I frowned. “Me? Why do I have to get used to it? Why can't you send someone else there?” “And let them ruin everything we've worked for? No way!” My tongue poked the inside of my cheek. “Can you all even do anything without me?” “Not at all.” He grinned. “You're the best.” When I stared at him blankly, he continued speaking. “Olly and Bella would appreciate the trip. They seemed to like Los Angeles a lot.” They did. It was a new place for them and they got to experience a lot of new things there so they were excited while we were in Los Angeles to the point that they didn't even want to leave. Both of them were crying when we were flying back. To get them to stop crying, I had to promise them we would be coming back soon. It seemed like I was going to fulfill my promise after all. “You're the best, Gianna.” He repeated when he saw the defeat on my face. He knew my children were my weak spot so he didn't hesitate to use them whenever he wanted something from me. “I'll take my leave now.” There was a certain bounce in his step as he walked out of my office, knowing he had gotten what he wanted. I shook my head fondly and went back to my work. I wouldn't lie and say I wasn't worried. The more time I spent in Los Angeles, the more likely it was to run into someone from my past. I had successfully evaded everyone the last time. I could only hope this time wouldn't be different. There were a lot of people I hadn't talked to in years. It would be a bother if I were to run into them. I was sure most of them hated me by now. I wouldn't be able to face them so I'd rather just avoid it.GIANNA~•~I let out a sigh as I checked the caller on my phone. I wasn’t surprised to see that it was my mother calling. Since the day I left Los Angeles, she had been calling every day to know when I would be back.I often used work as an excuse but that would only be able to hold her off for a short period of time, which was why I didn’t answer the call this time. Besides, I was in the process of creating a marketing plan and I had a meeting in the next five minutes. Answering her call would delay my meeting because she wouldn’t hang up until she got her message across. When she called for the second time, I put my phone on silent and kept it face down. I resumed working on my plan and when it was a minute to the meeting, I left my office and went into the conference room. By the time I got there, everyone was already present, including Jack. The chair at the head of the table was reserved for me as always. Jack and I had equal shares in the company but he liked to act like I was h
GIANNA~•~My parents didn’t call me much. The incident with Brandon ruined my relationship with everyone, including them. The only person I went out of my way to see and speak with was my sister. My parents didn’t know much about my life after I left LA. All they knew was that I was alive. They didn’t know that I left LA while I was pregnant. They didn’t know exactly where I lived. I didn’t tell them because I didn’t trust them enough to not tell Brandon and his family. They didn’t know I started up a business. They also didn’t know that I was raising two kids all by myself. My mother and I spoke very rarely because she didn’t like the choice I made to leave everything and start afresh, which was why I was quite surprised when she called me the day after I met Bailey.I didn’t know what Bailey’s relationship with Brandon was like. I didn’t know if she was still close with his family, but I could guess that she was the reason my mom was calling.I was tempted to ignore it but she had
BRANDON~•~Ethan and I shared a glance. He made a face and looked away from me but wasn’t kind enough to excuse us. I didn’t mind though. If Bailey wanted to embarrass herself, she most likely wouldn’t mind doing it in front of my friend. From what I knew, Gianna was keeping a low profile. I’d guessed she was trying to avoid the people she used to know. How did Bailey manage to find out that she was back? Truthfully, I didn’t care how she managed to get that information. I could only hope she didn’t cause trouble with it.“Is that why you’re creating a scene here?”Bailey gasped for reasons known best to her. Then she took a step back. “You’re not surprised.” She said more as a statement than a question. “You knew she cheated on you?”I gritted my teeth. While I had speculated that, it didn’t feel right hearing that come out of Bailey’s mouth, especially since she was one of the reasons Gianna and I got divorced. “What do you mean cheated on me?”She arched an eyebrow, a smug smile t
GIANNA~•~“Aunty Sheila, can we go to the store?” Bella asked my sister but I pretended not to hear her.“The store?” My sister echoed, staring at me as if she wanted me to answer for her. When I didn't, she turned back to her niece. “What do you want to go to the store for?”“Toys!” Oliver yelled.Bella scrunched up her nose cutely. “Toys? Are you a child?”“Aren't you?” Oliver fired back at her.She shook her head with an exaggerated sigh as though she was tired of dealing with him already. I held back a laugh. “I want to get art supplies. I'm bored, aunty.”“If you had toys, you wouldn't be bored.” Oliver interrupted again.“I do have them. I just prefer not to use them. There's a difference.”When Oliver couldn't come up with a retort, he simply stuck his tongue out at her.Despite how much she liked to act like she was mature, she stuck her tongue out in response and they made silly faces at each other until they were tired. I thought after that, Isabella would forget about the
BRANDON~•~“Mr. Wen said you canceled on him. Don't you know how important meeting him is?”I ran my hand through my hair. I knew the meeting was important but I was also very self-aware. I knew I wouldn't be able to focus on anything during the meeting and that would offend him even more. “I didn't cancel, father. I rescheduled.”“That's the same thing, you brat.”I didn't know how I was still considered a brat at thirty years old but I didn't dare point it out. My father was angry enough as it was. I didn't want to add to it. “What was so important that couldn't be held off for one hour?”I sucked on my bottom lip. I'd admit that I fucked up by rescheduling but that was the only thing I could think of when Ethan walked into my office. I knew it had something to do with Gianna so I quickly rescheduled the meeting I was supposed to be leaving for. If I hadn't, I would have spent the whole time thinking about something else. Gianna's new life.“I'll try my best to make it up to him,

BRANDON~•~Gianna left before I could try to meet up with her. I knew she wasn't going to meet me willingly but I had planned to “accidentally” run into her. However, it seemed like she didn't come back permanently.I knew I had said I wanted to respect her decision by not finding her, but I couldn't help myself anymore, not when she had been so close to me just a few days ago. With enough money, it was easy to find out that she was living in San Diego and once I had found that about her, I wanted to know more. The man in the picture with her happened to be her partner.A few years ago, they had put their ideas and funds together to start up a marketing company, which rose so fast that it was surprising. She wasn't just my ex-wife who used to stay at home all day unless she had a conference to attend. She was now a boss. She co-owned a company with someone else. She was doing so well on her own and I was very proud of her.I was very happy they weren't in a romantic relationship but
BRANDON~•~“Your wife is very fierce.” Ethan said as he joined me at the bar. Since he told me about Gianna’s presence earlier, I hadn't been able to concentrate. It was so bad that Bailey got angry and cut the outing short. After that, I told Ethan to meet me at the club where we could talk properly. He had never met Gianna but he knew all about her. He knew enough that he was able to recognize her at a glance. “You talked with her?” I questioned. There was no reason for him to approach her. “And she's not my wife, she's my ex.”Ethan laughed and beckoned a waiter over. We were in the VIP area and our booth was completely secluded from the rest of the bar. “If only you remember that during your drunken ramblings.”I glared at him as he ordered a drink for himself. The first time we met was at this very bar. It was the day after Gianna left. I'd drank so much that I completely blacked out and the next morning, I found myself at his place. He told me that all I did was talk and cry a
GIANNA~•~“Do you know that man?” Jack questioned, pointing at a table behind me.For a second, I froze, wondering if someone from my past had spotted me already. I hoped not. Slowly, I turned to glance at the table and there was a man staring at me. I didn't know him though. I shook my head at Jack, hoping it wasn't someone that knew that I was married to Brandon at one point in time.Brandon was a very famous businessman so it was possible a lot of people that I didn't know knew me. This was why I didn't want to come out to eat but Jack insisted and turning him down would be weird. Oliver and Isabella were with Stella at the Airbnb so we had time to talk about business.“Why does he keep staring at you then?”“How would I know?” I shrugged. “Maybe he's a creep.” I dismissed it, not wanting Jack to ask more questions about it.I hadn't told him anything about my past or about the father of my kids. I also didn't want to blatantly lie to him. I preferred to avoid the situation. “How
