Chapter Four – My sister’s mate.
Lila’s POV The entire pack had gathered to witness the making ceremony—families pressed shoulder to shoulder, elders seated in carved chairs near the front, and the Alpha’s council standing in solemn rows. The memory hit me like a rock . I walked in, hand in hand with Ethan, feeling his mark warm against mine as our names were called and the Moon Goddess blessed what had already been written in the stars. But right now, I walked in hollow, my mother on one side, Sofia on the other, my mark already gone. Everywhere I turned, whispers followed. Eyes lingered on my neck, searching for what wasn’t there. “That’s her.” “Ethan’s ex.” “She’s already rejected.” I held my head higher, though my heart felt like it was caving in. The ceremony began. Elder Rowan raised his staff, his deep voice rolling through the crowd. “Tonight, under the eyes of the Moon Goddess, we reveal what is written in the blood of destiny. May bonds be forged, and may no heart be left unbound.” The crowd roared, excitement spilling over, before falling into eager silence as the first names were called. One by one, wolves stepped forward. The elder touched the glowing orb set on a pedestal, and it revealed the mate chosen for each name. Cheers rose, tears were shed, and embraces sealed fated bonds. I tried not to listen. I tried not to watch. But then— “Ethan Cross.” My breath stopped. The crowd hushed, leaning in. Ethan stepped forward proudly, his dark hair neatly styled, his emerald eyes glittering under torchlight. I knew what was coming, yet the wound still gaped open as the elder placed his hand on the orb. “Marissa Lane.” Gasps filled the air. Then applause. Marissa stepped from the crowd, the sly smile she wore giving an impression of a woman who has time. It swelled Ethan's grin as if he had just been crowned the king. He pulled her to him, a wide smile on her face, as he sunk his teeth into her neck marking her as his mate, in front of everyone. I could hardly breathe. I was feeling pain in my chest as if someone had reached inside and yanked my heart again. Blessing people all around the area were cheering me, some with pity, but many clearly with derision in their gaze as they looked upon me. Sofia's hand slipped into mine, squeezing hard. I dared not look at her. I could only keep it together if I didn't turn toward her. So I kept my head straight for the next name, for the next, and for the next. But fate would not let me go just yet. "Sofia Hayes." My sister's name made my heart skip a bit. The crowd began to stir, leaning towards one another for whispers. Under Elder Rowan's hold, the orb pulsed with light. I felt my heartbeat in the thick silence. And then the elder's voice, rolling in: "Adrian Wolfe." For one heartbeat, silence was. The name hung like a thunderclap. And then gasps, murmurs, and disbelieving laughter. "The Alpha's son?" "The heir to the pack?" "With her?" Dozens of heads swivelled toward us. My mother had her hand over her mouth, her eyes brimming. Sofia stood frozen, seemingly unaware of what she just heard. Adrian Wolfe. Son of Alpha Daniel Wolfe. Future Alpha himself. And my sister's fated mate. Somebody in the crowd laughed. "Why would the Moon Goddess tie the Alpha's heir with a family of omegas?" But Elder Rowan only lifted his staff again. "The bond is written. The future Luna has been chosen." Sofia blinked rapidly, the moment of shock giving way to wonder. The next moment, pride painted her cheeks as the crowd exploded. Half the pack murmured in disbelief, the other half cheered boisterously, amazed at the improbable turn. I clapped along with everyone else, forcing myself to do so despite my palms feeling frozen. "And since the heir is not present at this ceremony," Elder Rowan declared, "the mate bond must be formally confirmed at the royal palace." Mother slipped her arm through Sofia's. "We must go at once. The Alpha will want to see us." Like a tide, we were swept in with all the people going to the palace, with the elders, guards, and courtiers leading the way while whispers tore off our family of three in the opposite direction. There lay the palace, a silver tower under the night moon, sharp spikes stabbing their way through the darkened sky, with banners billowing in the cool winds. I had only glimpsed it from afar before: an arena of the powerful, far from the likes of us. Tonight, however, we were going to be inducted into its belly. Golden lights spilled into the hall, draped overhead by chandeliers of crystal. The walls were lined with court attendants and nobles who whispered behind gloved hands, interspersed with guards in dark livery, standing sentinel-like. With a thudding heart, we made our way to the middle of the hall. Atop the dais stood the Alpha himself, sharp-eyed Daniel Wolfe. To his right stood his wife, Victoria, with raven-black hair braided perfectly on her head, and her expression unreadable. "Welcome," Alpha Daniel spoke, deep and commanding. "Sofia Hayes. Daughter of Caroline Hayes. The Moon Goddess has chosen you mate to my son, Adrian Wolfe. Tonight, the bond shall be honored." Sofia managed to lower her head in grace; I felt her tremble. And then the grand doors at the far end of the hall opened. With measured grace, he strode into view: tall. Broad-shouldered. Light brown hair glinting in the golden glow of chandeliers. Blue eyes scanned the room with calm authority. I held my breath. Him. The stranger from the club. The man whose name I had never asked. The man whose hands had grazed my skin, whose lips I kissed out of sheer need, whose body I clung to as though he were my lifeline. Adrian Wolfe. My one night stand. The future Alpha. And my sister's mate.Lila's POV “Fine.” Was the only word Victoria uttered before she stormed out of the room.Sophia had not moved from my side, nervous and holding on to her dress. She was somewhere caught between her duty to her mother-in-law and her feelings toward me. Her mouth opened, closed, opened, and now went, "Lila, I… I ought to—"I shook my head to halt her. My voice was soft, although I felt a dull ache in my heart at what Victoria had said. "Don't, Sophia. It's fine."She lowered her head in remorse, but honestly, I wished she would never have to deal with this again. I turned and left for my room.I stood in the room with clasped hands trembling in front of my mouth. Okay. I told Sophia it was all okay. The truth was it was not okay.It was not okay for Victoria to humiliate me like that!Knock, Knock, Knock."My lady," a servant's voice came from the other side of the door, "The Alpha seeks you."My heart sank. Adrian's father—The Alpha. Great! The servant led me down the long corridors
Lila’s POVI woke with a heavy body, clouded mind and sore fingers, but I noticed the rash and itching reduced.Slowly and carefully, I sat up then made my way to the bathroom where I took a quick bath before stepping out. I reached for a gown in the most delicate of pale blues—one I recognized would better compliment my eyes. I told myself, It isn’t as if I want to impress him; I merely wish to look presentable. But the truth was buried down deep somewhere.I dressed for him.For Adrian.Thinking of him was treason itself. I bit my lip as I tugged on the ribbons at my waist. He wasn’t mine. Never could be! The very thought of his voice u as he defended me, with calmness and command, like yesterday in the hall, had sunk into me deeply; I wanted to be around him again, even if it means just breaking my own heart a little. When I got mixed up with breakfast, following Sophia and my mother in my half-formed plans, a miniature dining chamber greeted me with only Adrian present. For a mome
Lila's POVThe preparations for the welcome feast continued into the next day. Sophia was carried away by her tutors, seamstresses, and advisers until I hardly saw her from one lesson to another-etiquette, dance, and ways of a Luna.Adrian too went missing. The palace should have been humming with life, but somehow it felt weirdly empty.Victoria saw to it that I got busy real soon. The first sting was flowers."Lady Lila," she said my name with a sweet tone I knew well enough not to trust. Whatever came next was meant to cut. "Be useful, will you? These are wilting roses. Arrange them before our guests arrive." I turned toward the towering vase, with its marble base shining and its roses drooping. The heads hung low, near my waist. Just looking at its height made my arm ache."Yes, Luna," I muttered. The rest of the workers in the hall exchanged glances but dared not speak. I felt my heart wildly beating in my chest as I crouched there, pulling thorns and adjusting blooms with fin
Lila's POV.Before I could utter a word, someone knocked at the door.A maid looked in, low-bowed, then announced that Luna Victoria requested to speak with Lady Sophia."Again?" Sophia said with laughter. "Perhaps the Moon Goddess herself does not want me to hear whatever it is you want to tell me because every time you open your mouth, someone calls me away."Her eyes were soft and teasing, if only she knew the words I would utter would crush her. She bent down, fingers brushing mine. "Promise me you'll tell me someday, whatever it is."I nodded, though I could not even utter a word, my throat was very dry.She smiled in happiness and left with mom following shortly after. The door swung shut with deep silence lighting upon me like a thick cloak of weights.Left all alone, I curled up on the bed, hugged my knees, and looked with no real aim at the faint light from the window. All was quiet in the palace; my mind was a mess. Ethan turned me down, picked someone else over me, and the
Lila's povAdrian's voice came behind me before I completed the excuse. "I brought her here", he said, "to learn more about my Luna."His words hit me rather hard, inert.Sophia blinked, surprised; her face reddened then she looked down before she could look at him again. "But... I told you everything last night."The voice had gone low, shyer; it made my stomach twist, it weighed heavily on my chest, and the jealousy cut deep inside. Last night. Just them. Was he touching her like he did me? Kissing her with that same hunger, whispering to her those same words whispered in my ear?I had to look away and instead tried to concentrate on the swaying roses beside the wall.Adrian showed no sign of concern at all. He moved a little closer to Sophia, his eyes shining with joy. "Why are you here, then? Did you miss me?"My heart skipped a beat further."Sophia!" Adrian said with a little anger, while her cheeks were flushed to reveal her sheer enjoyment of the joke. "You can't say that wit
Lila’s POV"What do you want to chat about?" I asked, acting cool, but my heart didn't play along. It beat so loud, I thought he might hear it.Something moved in Adrian's eyes, something deep that made the air heavy. "You know what."I went stiff, gripping the strap of my work bag tight. I shook my head a bit, faking a confused face. "I don’t."His look stayed strong. It seemed to cut through my act.Taking a slow, deep breath, he said again, this time softer but clear, "Please come with me. I'm serious.""Why?" I shot back fast, pulling my bag tight to me as if it could protect me.His mouth twisted in a small, cold smile. "Maybe I should just say it now... in front of all."I felt a tightness in my throat. The last thing I wanted was for others to hear hints of our error, a night that was a big mistake. Already, some of the palace helpers had stopped working, feeling the tension in his words. They looked back and forth between us, eyes wide and keen. Heat rushed to the back of my n
