LOGINChapter Four – My sister’s mate.
Lila’s POV The entire pack had gathered to witness the making ceremony—families pressed shoulder to shoulder, elders seated in carved chairs near the front, and the Alpha’s council standing in solemn rows. The memory hit me like a rock . I walked in, hand in hand with Ethan, feeling his mark warm against mine as our names were called and the Moon Goddess blessed what had already been written in the stars. But right now, I walked in hollow, my mother on one side, Sofia on the other, my mark already gone. Everywhere I turned, whispers followed. Eyes lingered on my neck, searching for what wasn’t there. “That’s her.” “Ethan’s ex.” “She’s already rejected.” I held my head higher, though my heart felt like it was caving in. The ceremony began. Elder Rowan raised his staff, his deep voice rolling through the crowd. “Tonight, under the eyes of the Moon Goddess, we reveal what is written in the blood of destiny. May bonds be forged, and may no heart be left unbound.” The crowd roared, excitement spilling over, before falling into eager silence as the first names were called. One by one, wolves stepped forward. The elder touched the glowing orb set on a pedestal, and it revealed the mate chosen for each name. Cheers rose, tears were shed, and embraces sealed fated bonds. I tried not to listen. I tried not to watch. But then— “Ethan Cross.” My breath stopped. The crowd hushed, leaning in. Ethan stepped forward proudly, his dark hair neatly styled, his emerald eyes glittering under torchlight. I knew what was coming, yet the wound still gaped open as the elder placed his hand on the orb. “Marissa Lane.” Gasps filled the air. Then applause. Marissa stepped from the crowd, the sly smile she wore giving an impression of a woman who has time. It swelled Ethan's grin as if he had just been crowned the king. He pulled her to him, a wide smile on her face, as he sunk his teeth into her neck marking her as his mate, in front of everyone. I could hardly breathe. I was feeling pain in my chest as if someone had reached inside and yanked my heart again. Blessing people all around the area were cheering me, some with pity, but many clearly with derision in their gaze as they looked upon me. Sofia's hand slipped into mine, squeezing hard. I dared not look at her. I could only keep it together if I didn't turn toward her. So I kept my head straight for the next name, for the next, and for the next. But fate would not let me go just yet. "Sofia Hayes." My sister's name made my heart skip a bit. The crowd began to stir, leaning towards one another for whispers. Under Elder Rowan's hold, the orb pulsed with light. I felt my heartbeat in the thick silence. And then the elder's voice, rolling in: "Adrian Wolfe." For one heartbeat, silence was. The name hung like a thunderclap. And then gasps, murmurs, and disbelieving laughter. "The Alpha's son?" "The heir to the pack?" "With her?" Dozens of heads swivelled toward us. My mother had her hand over her mouth, her eyes brimming. Sofia stood frozen, seemingly unaware of what she just heard. Adrian Wolfe. Son of Alpha Daniel Wolfe. Future Alpha himself. And my sister's fated mate. Somebody in the crowd laughed. "Why would the Moon Goddess tie the Alpha's heir with a family of omegas?" But Elder Rowan only lifted his staff again. "The bond is written. The future Luna has been chosen." Sofia blinked rapidly, the moment of shock giving way to wonder. The next moment, pride painted her cheeks as the crowd exploded. Half the pack murmured in disbelief, the other half cheered boisterously, amazed at the improbable turn. I clapped along with everyone else, forcing myself to do so despite my palms feeling frozen. "And since the heir is not present at this ceremony," Elder Rowan declared, "the mate bond must be formally confirmed at the royal palace." Mother slipped her arm through Sofia's. "We must go at once. The Alpha will want to see us." Like a tide, we were swept in with all the people going to the palace, with the elders, guards, and courtiers leading the way while whispers tore off our family of three in the opposite direction. There lay the palace, a silver tower under the night moon, sharp spikes stabbing their way through the darkened sky, with banners billowing in the cool winds. I had only glimpsed it from afar before: an arena of the powerful, far from the likes of us. Tonight, however, we were going to be inducted into its belly. Golden lights spilled into the hall, draped overhead by chandeliers of crystal. The walls were lined with court attendants and nobles who whispered behind gloved hands, interspersed with guards in dark livery, standing sentinel-like. With a thudding heart, we made our way to the middle of the hall. Atop the dais stood the Alpha himself, sharp-eyed Daniel Wolfe. To his right stood his wife, Victoria, with raven-black hair braided perfectly on her head, and her expression unreadable. "Welcome," Alpha Daniel spoke, deep and commanding. "Sofia Hayes. Daughter of Caroline Hayes. The Moon Goddess has chosen you mate to my son, Adrian Wolfe. Tonight, the bond shall be honored." Sofia managed to lower her head in grace; I felt her tremble. And then the grand doors at the far end of the hall opened. With measured grace, he strode into view: tall. Broad-shouldered. Light brown hair glinting in the golden glow of chandeliers. Blue eyes scanned the room with calm authority. I held my breath. Him. The stranger from the club. The man whose name I had never asked. The man whose hands had grazed my skin, whose lips I kissed out of sheer need, whose body I clung to as though he were my lifeline. Adrian Wolfe. My one night stand. The future Alpha. And my sister's mate.Sophia's POV Every morning I vowed myself only ten minutes walk, as little as it was better to stir the joints, to get the breath of air that was not laden with medicine or smothered anxiety. However, it happened that an hour always stretched to those ten minutes. Do not overdo it, a voice that I recognized said behind me. Adrian’s beta , Lucas. It was just walking, I said, as though I were innocent. “Not running laps.” He chuckled, stepping closer. That is not what the healers told last time. Someone had apparently decided to use the stairs which lead to the southern terrace, in order to get a glimpse of the view. I rolled my eyes. You make it sound as though I climbed up a mountain. And then it was to one who fainted two weeks ago? His eyebrow arched. “It’s close enough.” I attempted not to laugh, without success. “You sound like my mother.” He smiled. Then perhaps you had better hear once. We stepped in time with each other and walked along the road bordered with growing
Victoria's POV There was no council chamber in years that had been so tense. All the seats were occupied, old folk, guards, counsellors, all awaiting the word of the Alpha. The air was full of suspicion and questions not to be asked.Yet today it was not Adrian who was in command of the room. It was Marissa.I requested an audience, I said, sweetly, because I think that this court is entitled to the truth.Adrian was sitting at the chamber-head, but his features were indescribable. He spoke calmly with his voice. “Truth, Marissa? You have made a life of cringing that word.“Maybe,” she said with a shrug. But there are truths that you do not want to know.It started all at once, gossiping voices, glancing at each other. She loved the surge, and was feasting on the anarchy.I know things, I went on, and my voice went up, things your sweet Luna would not like the world to know. The secrets that would destroy the ideal image of your happy little family.Adrian didn’t flinch. “Then speak.
Adrian's POV The morning began too still. The silence which was not repose, even the instant before something disintegrated.I was sitting in my office, going through patrol reports when Rowan broke the door open, gasping. His habitual composure had been lost in something, tense and suspicious.Alpha, said he, with a lowering head. “We’ve found them.”My hand stood in mid writing. “Who?”He met my gaze. “Ethan and Marissa. They’ve come back.”The words hit like cold steel. I sat back in my chair, and tightened my fingers on the pen until it snapped.“Where?”“At the western border. They came to the patrol being unarmed saying that they want to repent. The tone of Rowan was enough to make it understood that he did not think so. “They asked to see you — only you.”Before I could help myself a bitter laugh got out. “Repentance. That’s new.”Rowan hesitated. “Your orders?”“Bring them in,” I said quietly. “Alive.”He blinked. “Alive? You’re sure?”“Yes.” My voice hardened. It is my desir
Victoria's pov It was a different atmosphere when I went through the palace gates once more. Lighter. Warmer. It was not the place that I used to conquer with fear and control. The guards showed no deference, as they were too terrified of me; they bent with deference to Adrian, and perhaps with politeness to the lady I once was.Welcome, Lady Victoria, one of them said in a polite manner.Lady. Not Luna.I smiled faintly. “Thank you.”The smell of the lavender and fresh bread was floating in the air as I walked through the familiar halls. It was flowered all in the passages, there was laughter at some point towards the gardens, and the weak cry of a baby giggling against the stone walls. My steps slowed. That noise, which was light, soft, pure, struck deeper than I had thought.Adrian was waiting to meet me at the great staircase. He was not like him, not in youth, but peace mate. His eyes looked calm as I had not seen the like of them since he was a boy.“Mother,” he greeted.“Adria
Lila's POV I didn’t sleep that night.I admired Lucien, who slept next me, with his little hand holding on to the edge of his blanket. His composed face was a difficulty to breathe. I had said to myself that I did the right thing. That it was worth it. The fact that one life would be swapped with another was a decision I was comfortable with. However, the act of reading the letter written by Sophia made me see something mean, forgiveness did not heal pain. It only made it gentler. The dawn came too soon.As I entered the passage the young morning sun tipped all the things gold. The palace was alive once more, servants murmuring, guards relieving, the sound of kitchen work in the distance. However, my thoughts were dragging in me as it was as if I were moving in water. The room of Sophia was only some doors away. I waited in the doorway listening. I might have heard the sound of her voice, so low, but still warm. Before I had knocked, she called Come in.When I got there she was sitti
Lila's povLucien waves his little fists feebly in my arms.“Hungry again, little wolf?” I said, and turned him softly against me.When he made me suckle, I began humming, hardly noticing that it was a melody my mother would sing to me and Sophia when we were sisters.Lucien twittered a little, like he knew. I chuckled under my breath. You will be a girl knowing that, won’t you? Forgiveness is the greatest virtue in this world. Power stronger than anger, Stronger than power, stronger than anger.I gazed a moment in the direction of the nursery door. I heard some humming--the voice of Sophia. My throat tightened, and I smiled. That is your aunt, I said to Lucien. “The bravest heart I know.”He winked and his small hand squeezed my finger. It is because of her you are here, I added covertly. And that it was what love is all about.Once his breathing came to balance, I laid him lying in his cradle beside the bed. The moonlight touched his features, and a moment made him look like a dream
