Lila’s POV
"What do you want to chat about?" I asked, acting cool, but my heart didn't play along. It beat so loud, I thought he might hear it. Something moved in Adrian's eyes, something deep that made the air heavy. "You know what." I went stiff, gripping the strap of my work bag tight. I shook my head a bit, faking a confused face. "I don’t." His look stayed strong. It seemed to cut through my act. Taking a slow, deep breath, he said again, this time softer but clear, "Please come with me. I'm serious." "Why?" I shot back fast, pulling my bag tight to me as if it could protect me. His mouth twisted in a small, cold smile. "Maybe I should just say it now... in front of all." I felt a tightness in my throat. The last thing I wanted was for others to hear hints of our error, a night that was a big mistake. Already, some of the palace helpers had stopped working, feeling the tension in his words. They looked back and forth between us, eyes wide and keen. Heat rushed to the back of my neck, shame rolling in my belly. "Fine," I spoke fast, softer than I meant to. "Where should we talk?" A flicker of pleasure crossed his face as he motioned for me to come along. "Follow me." I hesitated but the thought of him actually talking about what happened between us that night, here in the kitchen, when the maids already perked their east ready to catch the faintest of whispers, sent a shiver down my spine. So, I walked with him across the yard, away from the eyes of the palace. The path of stones went through tall green walls and blooms, taking us deeper into quiet. With each step, my heart got faster, pulled between fear and a feeling I wouldn’t say. When we got to a garden, everything felt still. It was quiet here, hidden from the world by walls of roses and lilies leaning towards the sun. The sweet air was all around me, calm but too strong. “This garden,” Adrian spoke at last, stopping by the stone water thrower in the middle, where water fell softly. “You’re only the second woman I’ve ever brought here.” His words made me freeze. My brows furrowed, curiosity pulling the question from me before I could stop it. “And the first?” His eyes lit up and a smile spread across his face. “Your sister.” The words hit me like a punch. I stopped breathing and turned away fast, looking at the flowers like they were all I could see. Sophia. It was always her. No matter how hard I tried, the jealousy crept up on me. He had brought Sophia here. Sure, she had the right to be here before me, but deep down, I felt she didn't belong. “I shouldn’t have said that,” Adrian said in a low voice. “I didn’t bring you here to make you hurt. I brought you here to say sorry.” I crossed my arms over me. “For what you did?” He nodded. “Yes. That should not have happened. It was my fault.” “It was our mistake,” I corrected, forcing my voice to stay steady though my insides trembled. “We both know it can’t happen again. And it won’t. So we keep it a secret. No one needs to know.” His shoulders fell a bit, yet his face still wore worry. "Agreed. But, I’m sorry… most of all for your mate. I know what went down." A soft pain hit me deep, like an open cut. The flashbacks of his false act wanted to rise, but I kept them down, balling my hands till my nails hurt my skin. "Don’t," I said in a low voice, almost breaking. "I don’t want to talk about him." "Alright," Adrian said in a gentle way, his voice full of real feeling. "I'll honor that." We stayed quiet then, with only the sound of water flowing from the fountain to fill the air. I thought we were done talking, but then he spoke again. “I also heard you’re a healer. At the pack’s clinic.” My head snapped toward him, my eyes narrowing. “How did you know that?” His lips twitched into the faintest smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Since last night to this morning, I’ve had every detail about my new family brought to me. I like to know the people close to me.” I exhaled slowly, caught between admiration and unease. He was thorough, maybe too thorough. “Then yes, I’m a healer. But…” “But?” he pressed, leaning closer, his eyes searching mine. “I’ll have to quit.” His brow creased instantly. “Why?” “Because your mother made it clear royals don’t work. The words left a bitter taste in my mouth. Saying them loud made the pain hit harder. Adrian’s jaw tightened, his look getting tough. “That’s my mother’s view, not mine or yours. If healing is what you love, you should not stop. I’ll talk to her.” I looked at him, shocked. “You would do that for me?” He nodded fast. “Of course. You’re part of this family now. No one should stop you from doing what gives you a goal.” I felt a warmth inside, growing despite myself. I looked down, saying, “Thank you.” The quiet that came next felt different, heavy with things left unsaid. It was the sort of silence that made you feel safe yet on edge. I could sense his gaze on me, strong and focused, and it became too much. If I stood there any longer, I worried I might add to my list of dirty secrets. “I should go,” I managed to say quickly, pushing my legs to walk to the door. My footsteps rang on the stone ground, trying hard to get me away from the pull of his look. But just as I was about to leave the garden, a shadow crossed my way. A shape I knew well came into view. Sophia. Her eyes grew big before her mouth turned into a smile. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice deceptively calm.Lila's POV “Fine.” Was the only word Victoria uttered before she stormed out of the room.Sophia had not moved from my side, nervous and holding on to her dress. She was somewhere caught between her duty to her mother-in-law and her feelings toward me. Her mouth opened, closed, opened, and now went, "Lila, I… I ought to—"I shook my head to halt her. My voice was soft, although I felt a dull ache in my heart at what Victoria had said. "Don't, Sophia. It's fine."She lowered her head in remorse, but honestly, I wished she would never have to deal with this again. I turned and left for my room.I stood in the room with clasped hands trembling in front of my mouth. Okay. I told Sophia it was all okay. The truth was it was not okay.It was not okay for Victoria to humiliate me like that!Knock, Knock, Knock."My lady," a servant's voice came from the other side of the door, "The Alpha seeks you."My heart sank. Adrian's father—The Alpha. Great! The servant led me down the long corridors
Lila’s POVI woke with a heavy body, clouded mind and sore fingers, but I noticed the rash and itching reduced.Slowly and carefully, I sat up then made my way to the bathroom where I took a quick bath before stepping out. I reached for a gown in the most delicate of pale blues—one I recognized would better compliment my eyes. I told myself, It isn’t as if I want to impress him; I merely wish to look presentable. But the truth was buried down deep somewhere.I dressed for him.For Adrian.Thinking of him was treason itself. I bit my lip as I tugged on the ribbons at my waist. He wasn’t mine. Never could be! The very thought of his voice u as he defended me, with calmness and command, like yesterday in the hall, had sunk into me deeply; I wanted to be around him again, even if it means just breaking my own heart a little. When I got mixed up with breakfast, following Sophia and my mother in my half-formed plans, a miniature dining chamber greeted me with only Adrian present. For a mome
Lila's POVThe preparations for the welcome feast continued into the next day. Sophia was carried away by her tutors, seamstresses, and advisers until I hardly saw her from one lesson to another-etiquette, dance, and ways of a Luna.Adrian too went missing. The palace should have been humming with life, but somehow it felt weirdly empty.Victoria saw to it that I got busy real soon. The first sting was flowers."Lady Lila," she said my name with a sweet tone I knew well enough not to trust. Whatever came next was meant to cut. "Be useful, will you? These are wilting roses. Arrange them before our guests arrive." I turned toward the towering vase, with its marble base shining and its roses drooping. The heads hung low, near my waist. Just looking at its height made my arm ache."Yes, Luna," I muttered. The rest of the workers in the hall exchanged glances but dared not speak. I felt my heart wildly beating in my chest as I crouched there, pulling thorns and adjusting blooms with fin
Lila's POV.Before I could utter a word, someone knocked at the door.A maid looked in, low-bowed, then announced that Luna Victoria requested to speak with Lady Sophia."Again?" Sophia said with laughter. "Perhaps the Moon Goddess herself does not want me to hear whatever it is you want to tell me because every time you open your mouth, someone calls me away."Her eyes were soft and teasing, if only she knew the words I would utter would crush her. She bent down, fingers brushing mine. "Promise me you'll tell me someday, whatever it is."I nodded, though I could not even utter a word, my throat was very dry.She smiled in happiness and left with mom following shortly after. The door swung shut with deep silence lighting upon me like a thick cloak of weights.Left all alone, I curled up on the bed, hugged my knees, and looked with no real aim at the faint light from the window. All was quiet in the palace; my mind was a mess. Ethan turned me down, picked someone else over me, and the
Lila's povAdrian's voice came behind me before I completed the excuse. "I brought her here", he said, "to learn more about my Luna."His words hit me rather hard, inert.Sophia blinked, surprised; her face reddened then she looked down before she could look at him again. "But... I told you everything last night."The voice had gone low, shyer; it made my stomach twist, it weighed heavily on my chest, and the jealousy cut deep inside. Last night. Just them. Was he touching her like he did me? Kissing her with that same hunger, whispering to her those same words whispered in my ear?I had to look away and instead tried to concentrate on the swaying roses beside the wall.Adrian showed no sign of concern at all. He moved a little closer to Sophia, his eyes shining with joy. "Why are you here, then? Did you miss me?"My heart skipped a beat further."Sophia!" Adrian said with a little anger, while her cheeks were flushed to reveal her sheer enjoyment of the joke. "You can't say that wit
