CHAPTER FIFTEENI had my helmet in hand by the time Reed Taylor squealed into the driveway. I climbed onto the bike behind him, wrapped my arms around his waist, and rested my head against his back.“St. Marks,” I said.“Hold on, baby,” he answered and took off. I closed my eyes. I tried not to think about Seth. Instead, I tried to figure out where Lydia could be.Seth wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. So obviously she wouldn’t be in the house when he tried to . . . do what he did. Is she at the babysitter’s? Except I am the babysitter. Who could she be staying with? Or, and the mere thought made my stomach heave, did something happen to Lydia, and that’s why Seth didn’t think he could go on?My eyes snapped open, and I flinched.“What’s going on?” Reed Taylor yelled back to me.“Just thinking,” I yelled back. He nodded and kept up his breakneck speed. No, if something had happened to Lydia, Seth would have called me. No matter how bad it was, we would have figured something ou
CHAPTER SIXTEENThe ride home took forever, and the worst part was it gave me time to think. Obsess, really. If Lydia was with Sparkles, then that meant she’s hanging out with her mom’s demon. Who knew what was going on, wherever they were? Seth was in no condition to go after his daughter. I think Reed Taylor would be willing, but what good would he be without Demon Patrol? He can’t even see the things. And Mouth seemed like he might know what’s going down, but he was, after all, a demon himself. We all know demons are liars.Mouth was waiting for us when we pulled in. He looked irritated.“All right, let’s go.”He stalked up the porch stairs.“Hey,” I called out, “you’re not going to be able to—”Mouth glided through the front door. I froze. I couldn’t make myself breathe right.“What’s wrong?” Reed Taylor asked me. He cursed. “I can’t see anything!”I licked my lips. “He just . . . he just went through the door. He’s in the house.” I turned to face Reed Taylor, hoping his go
CHAPTER SEVENTEENI left Reed Taylor standing in my driveway and headed to the flower shop on the far end of town. We had a big garden when I was a kid, full of daylilies. I packed the flowers up carefully and hopped back onto the bike. It was a good long drive, and it was getting dark when I arrived at the cemetery.I had been here so many times that I could walk the place blindfolded. I stepped carefully past the tattered flags and broken stone. My boots didn’t make a sound on the soft grass. I knelt down by a double stone that had two names carved on it.“Hi, Mom,” I said and kissed my fingers. I pressed them to her name. “How are things going there?”I stopped for a second. I wasn’t really sure what to say. I forced a smile just in case she could see me. And it made me feel braver, more confidant. The last thing I wanted to do was curl up and cry on my parents’ graves. I am not an orphan in a Charles Dickens story. I’m more . . . Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Only not cute and perk
CHAPTER EIGHTEENI had no desire to go home and see if it was still Demonic Central, so I slept on the bench. Of course I was cold and cranky and stiff when I woke up. Not to mention I had dreams about demons and daylilies. I was a little more bitter than usual this morning.Mouth had given me something to think about, I guess. He was a demon, and demons were bad. But he seemed good. Ish. If he could just get over his hatred for Reed Taylor, that is.The first stop was the hospital. The nurse smiled when she saw me.“Hello. And who are you here to visit this morning?”Obviously, she hadn’t heard anything about me. I gave her my cheeriest grin. “Why, hello, my wonderful and helpful health care provider. I’m here to visit my brother Seth Masterson. How is the sweet boy doing today?”Her eyes flickered. “Seth. So you’re his sister then.”Ah, she had heard of me.They directed me to Seth’s new room. He was staring at the ceiling when I walked in.“Hey, Seth.”His eyes floated my
CHAPTER NINETEEN“Reed Taylor, I need to talk to you.” I was nothing if not polite and gracious on the phone. A thing of beauty. An absolute queen of decorum.“Uh, not right now, Luna. I’m kind of in the middle of something.”I felt my eyebrows rise. “Really? But Seth believes me and needs our help.”“Not now. This is important.”“What could be more important than helping me get Lydia back?”He made a sound, and I could tell he was getting exasperated. Was I really being that forceful? Well yes, yes I was. But I needed him, and he knew it. At least, I thought he knew it.“Reed Taylor?” I asked. His voice was definitely strained. “Nothing is more important than getting your niece back. That’s precisely what I’m trying to do. But I need to deal with this right now, all right? Later, bye.” And he hung up.He hung up, just like that.I stared at the phone in shock. It looked properly apologetic. “I have no idea why he would possibly act in such a dastardly manner,” it seemed like
CHAPTER TWENTY“What are you doing here?” I demanded. I was so angry I was shaking.Sparkles laughed. “Oh, darling, you never cease to amuse me. You’re always so quick to lose your temper. You realize that’s why you’re always alone, don’t you? Nobody can take your attitude.”“Shut up,” I bit out. “Tell me where she is.”She smiled. It was reptilian. I saw demonic appendages waving in her hair and hatred emanating from her skin. She and the demon had become one, alright. I wanted to throw up. I wanted to hit her. I wanted to hit Reed Taylor, who was standing there looking more angry than I had thought possible.“Whatever are you talking about? Everybody knows you’re touched in the head, talking to things that aren’t there. Do you really think you see them? Or do you simply lie? Nobody would blame you if you do. What a tragic childhood. What a horrid, difficult girl.”A dark tentacle slid out of her mouth and went up through her nose. Her eyes looked like they were leaking oil.“T
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE“Luna.”I moaned and threw my arm over my face. It didn’t help any.“Luna. Good morning, pretty girl.”“Mom?”A snort. “Nice try, loser.”I blinked and sat up. I was still on the floor in Lydia’s room. Cripes, I hadn’t slept in a normal bed for two nights, and it was starting to get to me. My bones were screaming. The Mouthy Demon lounged in the doorway. “Time to rise, sunshine.”I yawned and stretched. “What are you doing here, Mouth? What time is it?”He flowed over and sat beside me. “It’s time for you to get cracking. I’m here to tell you to quit feeling sorry for yourself and get your butt in gear.”I frowned. “I’m not feeling sorry for myself.” I gingerly prodded at the emotional wounds from the last few days. Missing Lydia, nearly-dead Seth, betraying Reed Taylor. Ouch. Yeah, I was feeling sorry for myself.Mouthy Demon kicked at me with his dark foot. It almost hurt.“Hey! You’re feeling calm and happy again! Look at you, almost fully formed.” I d
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWOThe shower was always a place where I could think. It was a place where I was truly alone except for once when I caught something peeping out at me from the bathroom mirror. Seth had come running when I had screamed and had assured me it wasn’t a demonic presence but only a particularly bad case of bed head. As if.I let the water cleanse everything away. The leftover malice, the hurt and despair. I tried to imagine the water had healing properties that could wash away all of the misery. But really, I simply had to push it all to the back of my mind. I couldn’t afford to waste my energy feeling crushed. It was time for action.I dried off, got dressed, and combed my hair. I stepped out of the room to see Mouth leaning against the wall, waiting for me.“Hello, Mouth. You’re being particularly stalkerish and creepy this morning.”“Really? I thought I was always this way. Maybe you’re just ultra-sensitive.”“Shut up.”He followed me down the stairs. “You look kin
