Brooklyn's POV

"You don't have to do that, you know."

I turned to look at him. "Do what?"

"Daisy." Emerson leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, keeping his voice low enough not to carry through her door. "You don't have to be everywhere she is. You don't have to insert yourself into every moment."

"Insert myself?" I kept my voice equally low but the edge in it was immediate. "She was alone in the dark crying with both hands over her ears. What exactly was I supposed to do? Walk past?"

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 120

Brooklyn's POVHis hand closed around my wrist before I reached the door."You can't just leave.""Emerson — ""Not like this." He turned me back, not roughly, just — turning me. His eyes were doing the thing they did when he had run out of the managed version of himself. "Not right now.""Your father is coming home in two days to announce a wedding date." I kept my voice low and steady. "Those were the words I heard through that door. Wedding date." I held his gaze. "Tell me what version of me staying here ends well. Tell me one version and I'll listen."He said nothing."There isn't one," I said. "You know there isn't.""Brooklyn — ""Riley is in the next room." I pulled my wrist free gently. "She came back early because something felt wrong and something was wrong and she was right to feel it." I picked the bag back up. "I can't be here when Patrick arrives. I can't sit at a dinner table and watch an engagement get made official and pretend I don't — " I stopped. He was looking at

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 120

Emerson's POVHe took the call in the hallway."Dad.""I'm cutting the trip." Patrick's voice had the specific quality it carried when he had already made a decision and was informing rather than consulting. "I'll be back in two days.""Okay.""There's news about the timeline." A pause. "The Holloways want to move the announcement forward. James has been speaking with some people and there's a window in the next month that works for both families."Emerson looked at the wall."A public announcement," Patrick continued. "Press, a small event, nothing overwhelming. But official." Another pause. "I told James I'd confirm with you but I want to be clear — this is important to me, Emerson. This is important to this family.""I understand.""Do you?" The sharpness in his father's voice was not anger exactly. More like the edge that appeared when Patrick wanted to make sure something was landing. "Because I've been reading the situation from a distance and I want to know before I get home —

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 118

Brooklyn's POVThe silence lasted three full seconds.Three seconds of Riley holding up a picture book and looking between us with eyes that were doing a great deal of quiet work and Emerson standing in the doorway with no answer ready and me standing next to the bookshelf wishing I had grabbed literally anything else. Then Daisy came bounding back in.She pushed past Emerson in the doorway with the easy confidence of someone who lived here and therefore did not require permission to enter any room in the house. She looked at all three of us standing in the specific arrangement of people who had been in the middle of something, and then she looked around the room like she was assessing what was missing."Why is everyone just standing here?" she said. "Can we play something?"The atmosphere shifted immediately. Not dissolved — Riley was still holding the book and her eyes were still doing their careful work — but Daisy's presence changed the temperature of everything by several degrees

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 117

Brooklyn's POVRiley's eyes did not leave my face. The confusion lasted about two seconds. Just long enough to register and then sharpen into something more pointed and more dangerous."What are you doing in here?"Her voice was controlled. Not loud. The kind of controlled that means someone is deciding how much to show."I was just — " I started."Where's Emerson?""He took Daisy back to her room." I kept my voice even. "I came to return something. He said it was fine.""Return what?"My eyes moved to the bookshelf behind me before I had a plan.I grabbed the first thing my hand found.A book. I looked at it for exactly half a second — enough to register that it existed — and held it up."A book," I said. "Daisy borrowed it. I was bringing it back."Riley looked at the book in my hand. Then at me.She stepped inside the room.I stayed where I was and watched her scan it the way she had scanned rooms before — methodically, without rushing, looking for the thing that didn't sit right.

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 116

Brooklyn's POVThe silence from Emerson's side of the wardrobe lasted exactly long enough to be dangerous. Then — "She dropped off a charger."I heard it from my position pressed against the wall. His voice was completely even. Almost convincing."A charger," Daisy repeated."For her phone." A pause. "She needed it back."Another pause. I could picture Daisy looking at him with those careful eyes doing their usual calculation."Oh," she said finally.I let out a breath so slowly it made no sound. Then Daisy started talking.About her day — the drawing she had finished before bed, the puzzle she wanted to start tomorrow, something about a bird she had seen from her window that afternoon. Her voice was light and unbothered and she was clearly in absolutely no hurry to return to her room.I heard the creak of his bed.She had climbed onto it.I pressed my shoulders harder against the wall and looked at the ceiling and thought about the fact that I was hiding behind a wardrobe in Emerson

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 115

Brooklyn's POVHe didn't answer. He just looked at me with his chest still moving too fast and his eyes doing the thing where they held on and wouldn't let go and the silence stretched until I could feel the weight of it physically. Then he stepped forward.I stepped back. My shoulders found the wall before I had finished moving and there was nowhere further to go and he stopped with just enough space between us that I could still think, barely, if I focused.I waited. He said nothing."You're not answering me," I said.Still nothing."That's an answer in itself, you know." I kept my voice level. "If there was a good answer you'd have given it by now."He looked at me."I was fine," I said. The words came out before I had fully decided to say them. "This past week — " I stopped and tried again. "I know it didn't look like fine. I know Daisy noticed and Sawyer noticed and probably everyone with eyes noticed that something was different." I held his gaze. "But I was managing. I could br

Brooklyn's pov "Move!"Emerson shoved past me before I could even process what was happening. He threw himself over Daisy and me, arms spread wide, taking the full weight of the branch across his back. The crack was loud. Then silence.I scrambled to my feet, heart hammering. "Emerson — ""I'm fin

Brooklyn's pov"Teacher f***er."I heard it the second I walked through the doors of Westfield Academy. Nobody said it to my face. They never did. Just loud enough for me to catch it, quiet enough for them to deny it.I kept walking. Two weeks. That's how long this rumour had been following me arou

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 5

Brooklyn's pov "Here is the deal." Emerson leaned against the hallway wall, arms crossed, voice low enough that Daisy couldn't hear from the dining room. He looked completely relaxed, like he negotiated truces every morning before breakfast. "I stay out of your way," he said, "so you're free to

Brooklyn's pov "Time to feast."I heard Emerson say — cleats still on, grass-stained from soccer practice, heading straight for the kitchen like the fridge owed him something.I stayed on the couch and waited. The silence that followed was deeply satisfying."What the — " A pause. Then louder. "Why
