Prologue

Whoever said living forever would be fantastic has never lived more than one lifetime. I've lived long enough to see empires rise and fall, battles and wars fought, won and lost. So many lives have died, and I have outlived them all. I was an ordinary man once. I had a relatively normal life for my time. My father was a man who thought his son should grow up early. For every wrong I committed, I was whipped. Those scars, like many others, faded over time.My Rose would always trace them with her fingertips, and her touch was always so soothing. Rose was my wife. I didn't have nearly enough time with her. When I was born, it was the time of knights, princes, princesses, dukes, kings, queens, and peasants. She was a peasant, and I was a knight. We were not allowed to marry because of our status.I was interested in her instantly, though. She became angry because I knocked her over while riding. The bucket of water she was carrying fell on her. It got her dress dirty. I wasn't supposed t

Chapter 1

I remember the first time I actually showed myself to Dominique. I was in the club, but she hadn't noticed me. I watched her get on the stage, sing, and play the keyboard. I began to move toward the stage, and she noticed me. I watched her and became mesmerized as I had every other time I had watched her play. She kept looking at me and caught me looking at her every time. Finally, when she smiled at me, I felt my heart flutter. I haven't felt that in a long time. She didn't know it, but I could tell she was becoming aroused. She stared into my eyes and sang to me. I felt like it was just the two of us in that club as she continued to look into my eyes as she sang. When the band was done playing, I watched her get off the stage and head to the bar. Of course, I had to make this my opportunity, so I walked to the bar. I sat beside her and noticed her look at me from the corner of her eye. I simply turned towards her and placed my hand on her shoulder. I instantly felt that spark I ha

Chapter 2

"Well, Nathaniel, now that you have the answer you came for, I will say goodbye to you. I have some things to check on.""Will you be busy for the rest of the night?""Maybe. Why do you ask?""Do you dance, Dominique?""Sometimes. Every once in a while, someone will ask me to dance. Occasionally I accept. It's usually one of my regulars. Why do you ask?""I did mention that I wanted to check out the local club. I didn't come in here looking for a band to audition for. I've danced with a few women. But you're the one who caught my attention. Would you be willing to save a dance for me tonight?""Um, sure, I guess. If you're still here, I'll find you," Dominique replied."I'll be here for the rest of the night. I look forward to seeing you later," I said, taking her hand and kissing it again. She walked away, and I saw Melissa trailing after her. I watched as they talked, and suddenly Dominique took off. I thought it was strange, but I didn't really know what was going on, so I let it b

Chapter 3

The next time I met with Dominique was at the restaurant she went to. I was watching outside her house, of course, and saw her walk out. She was dressed up like she was going on a date. I ran through the woods to my car. I started my car and waited until I saw her car come out of her long driveway. I waited until she was a few car lengths ahead and followed her. When she went into the restaurant, I waited outside for a few minutes. I walked in and immediately told the maitre d’ that I was meeting someone and pointed at a table. I began to walk over and quickly detoured to see the entire restaurant. I found Dominique sitting at a table, and I also saw someone sitting with her. I quickly realized that it was her ex. I moved closer and could hear her tell him that she was waiting for her date and he was running late from a meeting. I figured this was as good of a chance as any to get some alone time with Dominique without seeming to be a creep. However, I began to smell something I ha

Chapter 4

My mind wandered to my life with Rose. First, it went to death, and how I had to watch her waste away. Back in those days, people did not live as long. She died at the age of 50. Looking into the diseases discovered since that time, I believe my Rose suffered from tuberculosis. I looked at Dominique and realized she had been staring at me. Her mind was turning, and I could see it written all over her face. I couldn’t have her asking questions just yet. I would explain all of it to her later. “I can see your mind is thinking of questions. However, I would request that you don’t ask them. Perhaps at a later date, I will be able to talk to you about it but not now. Ok?” “Ok. I can understand. There are things I would prefer not to talk about, also. My ex is one of them.” “Fair enough. Do you have any children, Dominique?” I watched as she touched her necklace. She wore it all the time. I had often wondered what it symbolized. Since I had not heard the whole story about Dominique

Chapter 5

“Would you like to play some music? Something slow would be preferable,” I said. She had her phone in her hand like she might need it. I knew it was a precaution, but I was fine with it. I held my hand out, and she took it. I pulled her against me and began to slow dance. It was a beautiful night. There wasn’t a cloud in sight. The moon was full and shining bright, with a million stars twinkling in the sky. “It’s breathtaking,” Dominique said. “Yes, it is,” I replied as I continued to look at her. She looked at me and saw that I was only looking at her. She had blushed so much tonight that I was surprised her face wasn’t permanently red. She laid her head on my chest, and I felt my heart flutter. I pushed my face into her hair at her temple. “You smell good. Almost good enough to eat,” I commented as I sniffed her hair. “Umm...thanks, I think. Don’t turn into the big bad wolf, and we’ll be okay. Although I don’t think the big bad wolf would smell so good. Or have a gorg

“Well, what do you guys think? Think he can join our little house band?” Dominique asked.   “He’s good. I say yes,” Melissa replied.   “I agree,” Post said.   “Well, Nathaniel, it looks like you’re in if you want to be. I’ll warn you, though, we don’t get paid. We just do this for fun. We practice twice a week and play once a week on Fridays for at least an hour.”   “I don’t need the money. I told you, I’m doing this because I love to play, and it helps me relax.”

Chapter 7

“It couldn’t all be bad. You were engaged, were you not?” “Yeah. I thought he loved me. He was so sweet at first. He always brought me flowers or just texted me to say hello. After about a year, the romance died out some, but we were comfortable with each other. We never lived together, but we always stayed at each other’s houses. We practically lived together. Then after about three years, he started working late all the time, or he would go out drinking. He started breaking plans with me and forgetting I was supposed to be at his house. When he would come home, he would be surprised I was there, and he would also be plastered. I put up with it for a couple of years because I did love him. But that last year, he was vicious with the things he said. He hit me once when I got in his face about the drinking. That was it for me. I started going to his job and found out he wasn’t working. I would wait until he left his house and follow him. That’s when I found out about the woman he sl

Chapter 8

Dominique and I began to text each other regularly. It was nice getting to know her, but I did wish to hear her voice on the phone when I wasn’t at the club. I let her have this as she seemed nervous about getting to know me. I went to the bar regularly to play in the band and see her. Sometimes I could even get her to dance with me or play pool. I thought things were going well until her bartender died. That’s when everything blew up on me. I came into the bar and sat down at our usual table. I had smelled Tim before I ever saw him. He was behind the bar. Dominique came over off and on during the night, but she kept looking at the bar. Finally, I asked her to dance. I held her close, but I could definitely feel Tim’s eyes on us. “Dominique, may I ask you a question?” “Sure. You’ve never asked me before if it was okay. Why start now?” Dominique replied. “Is that your ex-fiancé?” “Yep,” Dominique sighed. “Why would he be behind the bar?” “Well, my bartender died, and no

Chapter 9

Why couldn’t she see that I didn’t want anyone else? I was trying so hard not to say or do the wrong thing. She kept saying she wasn’t into Tim, but that blush a few minutes ago said something had happened.    I walked up to her and said, “I’m not looking for anyone else. I’ll wait as long as it takes for you to come my way.”   “Um, okay. Where would you like to go?” Dominique asked.    “I would like to take you back to La Nobles. You seem to like it there. Then we can go to a movie. And perhaps after that, we can just go walking so we can talk.”
