Chapter 76- Danielle, Alive

The corridor beyond the yacht's main room was darker than I expected.

The guards pushed Arlo ahead of me, keeping enough distance between us that we couldn't reach each other. I tried to slow down, but the man behind me tightened his grip on my arm and forced me forward.

“Where are you taking us?” I demanded.

Neither guard answered.

Arlo turned his head as much as the restraints allowed.

“Sofia.”

“I’m here.”

His eyes found mine.

“Stay close.”

“I’m trying.”

We were led down another narrow passag

The guards pulled me through the corridor before I had any chance to fight them properly.I twisted against their grip, searching for Arlo, but he was being dragged in the opposite direction by two other men. “Arlo!” I shouted, my voice echoing through the yacht. He turned immediately, his eyes locking onto mine as the guards forced him toward another corridor.“Sofia!”“I’m here!”One of the men shoved me forward.“Keep moving.”I stumbled but caught myself before I fell.“Where are you taking him?”No answer.I looked back again.Arlo was still fighting them.“Don't let them separate us!” he shouted.“I won't!”A guard grabbed my shoulder and spun me around.“You don't decide where you go.”I glared at him.“Neither do you.”His expression hardened, but he didn't respond. They dragged me farther down the corridor, away from Arlo. The distance between us grew with every step. Then I heard a door slam somewhere behind me.I stopped fighting. For one terrible second, there was nothing.

“He wants to replace Isabelle with you permanently.”Danielle's words refused to leave my head.I looked at her, then at Arlo, trying to find a flaw in what she had said. There had to be one, because the alternative was too horrifying to accept.“But Isabelle is alive,” I said.“For now.”My stomach tightened.“You said Konstantin wants to erase both of us.”“He doesn't need to kill you both.”Danielle stepped closer.“He only needs to make sure neither of you can ever reclaim your identity.”I looked towards the locked door. The idea suddenly made every part of the plan make sense. The wedding. The engagement. The public appearances. The photographs. The way everyone had been encouraged to accept me as Isabelle.Konstantin hadn't simply tolerated the deception. He had been building it.“He wants the world to believe I'm Isabelle.”“Yes.”“And Isabelle disappears.”“Yes.”“Then what happens to me?”Danielle's expression hardened.“You disappear too.”My throat tightened.“But if I'm I

He entered a code, unlocked it, and pulled it open. The smell hit me first.Damp air.Old wood.Something faintly medicinal. My stomach tightened.“This is where you keep people?”The guard shoved me inside.Arlo was pushed in after me.The door slammed shut. For several seconds, there was only darkness. Then a weak light flickered on overhead.I looked around. The room was small, almost completely bare. There was a narrow bed against one wall,

I couldn't answer him.Arlo's confession sat between us, too heavy to ignore and too complicated to accept. I had spent months believing that whatever happened between us had grown naturally, only to discover that the beginning had been arranged around a purpose I had never known existed.I looked at him and tried to separate the man I loved from the man who had once been assigned a role in my life.“You should have told me.”“I know.”“You had so many chances.”“I know.”“You looked me in the eyes and told me you trusted me.”“I did.”“You told me I was safe with you.”“You were.”“How can you say that after admitting you were working with him?”Arlo's jaw tightened.“Because I stopped working for him.”“When?”“Before I knew what you meant to me.”I shook my head.“That isn't an answer.”“It is the only honest one I have.”I turned away. The yacht continued cutting through the water, carrying us farther from the people who had been with us and deeper into Konstantin's control. Somew

“I was supposed to keep you close.”Arlo's words landed harder than anything Konstantin had said.I gripped the edge of the table, needing something solid beneath my hand.“What does that mean?”Arlo looked at me, but I couldn't read his expression anymore.“It means exactly what he said.”“No.” I shook my head. “I want to hear it from you.”“You are.”“Then explain it.”Konstantin remained behind him, silent for once. That silence made it worse.Arlo lowered his gaze to his bound hands.“When my grandfather first approached me, he told me there was a problem with Isabelle.”I swallowed.“He said?”“That someone was going to impersonate her.”My breath caught.“So you knew.”“I knew someone was being brought into the family under Isabelle's name.”“Before I met you?”“Yes.”I stepped away from the table.“How much did you know?”“Not everything.”“That's not an answer.”“I knew enough to understand that something was wrong.”“Did you know it was me?”“Not at first.”I stared at him.“

“You're lying.”The words came out before I could stop them, but Konstantin didn't look surprised. He simply watched me from across the room, the folder still open in his hand as though he had been expecting that exact response.“Of course that's what you want to believe.”“I know Arlo.”“You think you do.”I stepped closer and snatched the folder from his hand.Several documents were inside, along with printed photographs and copies of messages. I scanned the first page, then the second, searching for something obvious, something that would expose the lie. There had to be something.A forged signature.A date that didn't match.A name Arlo would never have used.Anything.Instead, I found his name.ARLO ALFIE.My stomach tightened. The document was dated weeks before I had ever met him.I read the first paragraph. Then I read it again. My fingers tightened around the paper.“You could have made this.”Konstantin's expression remained calm. “I could have.”“So you did.”“If believing
