Chapter 4

Autor: Nameless
I ignored them, my eyes locked onto Leo. There was a hint of smugness in the depth of his eyes that he hadn't managed to hide in time.

That told me all I needed to know.

Mila spoke then, her voice frosty and unrelenting. "You've changed into someone I barely even recognize because of jealousy. Leo has won so many awards, and I haven't seen you be happy for him even once. Now that you've lost something of your own, you're quick to blame him, huh?"

She walked up to me, looking at me with disgust and contempt. "Wasn't the money I gave you enough? Did you really have to stoop so low just to get attention? Jared, you disgust me."

I looked at them, the people who were supposed to be my family, standing like three walls between Leo and me, keeping the two of us in completely different worlds. Each of them was tearing me apart with the cruelest words, one blow after another.

I suddenly laughed. I laughed so hard that my eyes welled up with tears. Then, instead of replying to them, I turned around and walked away.

Behind me, I could hear Delilah crying and Mila yelling at me, but I couldn't bring myself to listen to another word.

When I got back to my empty dorm room, I slid down the door and sat on the floor, feeling like nothing more than a hollow shell.

The city lights flickered outside the window, but not a single one of them was shining for me.

It was over. Everything was over.

Just as I was about to sink completely into despair, my phone screen lit up with a crisp little chime. There was a new email from an anonymous sender.

My hands trembled as I opened it. Attached to the email was a compressed file. Almost without thinking, I downloaded and extracted it. The folder was named "Coming Home", and inside were all my design files, modeling data, and backup materials.

The email contained only one sentence. It read, "Your talent shouldn't go to waste."

I froze.

The next evening, the ballroom of the city's most prestigious hotel was ablaze with lights. As one of the main sponsors of the exchange program, Mila was present. She was holding a glass of champagne and making small talk with a few of the other partners.

Benjamin Dunn, one of the event organizers, walked over with his own glass and gave Mila's shoulder an approving pat. "Mila, your family sure are a talented bunch. Leo is incredibly gifted at piano, and who knew you would have another brother who was just as talented at landscape design?"

Mila gave him a polite smile. But in her mind, she kept thinking about the word "brother".

"Mr. Dunn, you must be joking. I only have one brother."

"Oh, really?" Benjamin paused, then suddenly realized his mistake. "Oh, I must've gotten it wrong. I mean that student from your school, Jared. His design really blew me away today. He's one of the most promising talents I've seen in years!"

Mila's smile stiffened.

My name instantly shattered the calm in her mind.

Mila suddenly remembered Leo telling her with reddened eyes how I'd left the house angry and was working multiple part-time jobs because I needed the money. He'd said he was afraid I'd get taken advantage of.

Then, she remembered the money she'd sent me, the cold way she'd told me to name my price, and the way she'd scolded me the night before.

Mila realized this was what I'd been working myself to the bone for. A design project that had one of the biggest names in the industry calling me one of the most promising young talents he'd seen in years.

She, along with the rest of the family, had thought I was just pulling a childish stunt to win sympathy.

Mila tightened her grip on her glass, her face pale. She quickly dialed my number.

I turned around, feeling completely calm. "I don't need you to make it up to me."I pointed at the boarding gate that was about to close. "I just want to live my own life."Mila rushed over and grabbed my arm forcefully. "No! You can't go! I won't let you leave!""Let go." My voice was cold and emotionless."No way!" She clamped onto me. "I've already sent Leo away. I…"This time, I yanked my hand away with a force hard enough to make Mila stumble. "Even if you get rid of Leo, someone like him will pop up again sooner or later."I looked her in the eye. "He's not the problem. What's problematic is your prejudice, your selfishness, and the choices you made."The announcement came over the speakers once more, urging me onward. With that, I looked away from Mila and walked straight toward the gate. My steps were unwavering, each one crushing the misery of the past beneath my feet."Jared!" she called after me, her voice growing fainter with every step I took.I entered the jet b

The little brother she'd looked down on for years was actually the innocent one she'd failed. How ironic.I slowly stood up and looked at the family I'd once tried so hard to fit into. Then, I looked at the family photo on the wall. In the photo, the three of them were gathered around Leo, smiling brightly.I let out a breath, as if trying to get rid of all the hurt and resentment I'd carried over the years. I looked at them. My voice was almost too calm. "All these years, I was an outsider."I blocked Mila. The confirmation on my screen said it all. I didn't hesitate. One tap, and I cut off all ties with her. Then, I blocked Delilah, Mitchell, and Leo too.My phone went silent. So did everything else. The airport was packed, so I found a quiet corner and sat down with my suitcase by my feet. There wasn't much in it, just a few clothes and the design sketches I'd managed to salvage.I hadn't taken anything from the Parker family. It felt like someone had pulled me out of a sw

Only Mitchell kept up his usual domineering act. "What the hell are you talking about? You're seriously losing it!"I smiled, not bothering to engage with him. Then, I took my time opening the envelope, took out the old, yellowed photo, and pushed it toward the center of the coffee table.I asked, "Do you guys know this woman?"The photo showed a woman gently holding a baby.Delilah's breath caught. Her lips trembled, but she couldn't get a word out. Mitchell's eyes widened, like he'd just been hit with something he wasn't prepared for."No, I don't know her." His voice sounded dry, and he couldn't bring himself to look at the photo again."Really?" I pulled the letter out too, unfolded it, and placed it beside the photo. "This letter has to be for you two, right? Dear Delilah, I secretly switched your son with mine…"Mila stepped forward and snatched up the letter, quickly scanning through it. Her expression went from confusion to shock to disbelief, until her face turned death

It felt like something had exploded inside my head. My mind went blank for a moment, and I could hear my heartbeat pounding like a drum.It was a deliberate switch!I tightened my grip on the letter. My fingertips dug into the paper until my knuckles turned white. Then, slowly, I loosened my grip."Are you okay?" The young man asked uneasily when he saw how pale I'd gone.I ignored him and kept staring at the letter. At the bottom was an address, along with a last name. It wasn't the Parker family or the Smith family, but a name that I'd never heard before. Then came a deion of the place, followed by one sentence. "They are way richer than the Parker family."My breathing quickened. It wasn't an accident. It was a scheme. That was how I ended up with the Parker family. They looked down on me, used me, and treated me like a stepping stone for Leo.For 20 years, I'd been an idiot, struggling and begging for their affection while living in their lies and their fake version of a f

Mila's voice was firm. "Jared, you'll regret this."I just kept flipping through the magazine.Regret? I'd felt that way a long time ago. I'd regretted trusting them for so long.Mila waited a few seconds for me to react. When I still didn't respond, she finally turned and strode out of the living room.I heard the front door slam shut, hard enough to make the windows rattle.I glanced at the black card on the coffee table, then went back to flipping through my magazine. My phone buzzed with a notification from my bank. A sizable bonus had just hit my account. I got way more than I expected from the exchange program's first payment.I stared at it, and a smile gradually appeared on my face. The money couldn't have come at a better time.Early the next morning, I went to the county clerk's office. It was time to find out what the Parker family was hiding.…When I got my acceptance letter for the overseas internship after the exchange program ended, I finally felt like I coul

Even though it was blurry, I could still recognize the person. It was the man Leo had hired to mess with my laptop. In the background, a black sedan was parked nearby, and its license plate was clearly visible. It belonged to Mila's private investigator. They'd seen everything.I put the document back on the coffee table and took a picture of the license plate with my phone.Even though there were things they didn't want me to know, I planned to find out for myself. My gut instinct told me that Mila's hesitation and Leo's obsession went beyond plain jealousy.…Three days later, Mila came to me. For the first time, there was a crack in her icy expression. She tossed a black card onto the table before me. Her words came out rough and stiff, like she was forcing herself to speak. "Come home. Stop embarrassing yourself out there. If you need anything, just tell me."I stared at the card and laughed. It was obviously expensive and had no spending limit. I usually had to think twi
