Chapter 2

작가: Walnut Bread
My knee was already injured. Three years ago, I got hurt saving Vincent from a car crash. My injury hurt so much that it felt like my heart was being poked with needles.

I knew I could not fight back. I was too slow.

Vincent's eyes turned sharp. The next moment, his two goons grabbed my shoulders and pushed me down hard.

My knees hit the marble floor with a thud. Pain shot through me, and I broke out in a cold sweat as my face turned pale.

A hint of pity flashed in Vincent's eyes. He picked up a cup of warm water and held it to my lips. "Say you're sorry."

His voice was softer now.

"If you just say that you made the whole thing up, I'll get a doctor to help you right away."

I looked at the water, then at his eyes, which used to be so kind. I knocked the cup away with a fierce swipe of my hand. "I didn't fake anything! My mom's life was taken! Vincent, can't you see the truth?!"

The cup crashed to the ground, and pieces flew everywhere.

Jenny screamed and curled up in her chair. "I'm scared! Vincent, does she want to hurt me?"

Vincent's expression went stone-cold. Any softness he had shown toward me just moments ago was gone.

"Fine. Very well then." He grabbed a whip from someone else. "If you're going to be tough, I'll teach you a lesson myself."

The first strike tore through my clothes and cut my skin.

Vincent's face twitched, and his hand shook a little when no one was looking. The second strike was softer. He lashed and roared at the same time, "Alice, why are you so bull-headed? Why are you picking on Jenny? Just give in and I'll act like this never happened!"

I bit my lip so hard it bled, but I did not make a sound. I just stared at him, my eyes empty. My quiet defiance made him more upset than if I had yelled or cried.

He lifted the whip high, his grip tightening, but he just could not bring it down.

Just then, Jenny's voice broke through. It sounded like she was crying. "Please! Don't hit her anymore! Please stop hitting Alice!"

Her tears streamed down her cheeks, and she was shaking all over.

"It's all my fault... I'm a coward. I shouldn't have been frightened by the fire. I shouldn't even be here. I'll go away now so that Alice won't get mad and be punished because of me."

With that, she tried to run and stand in front of Vincent. However, her legs went weak, and she fell down hard with a cry. Her face was ghostly white, and she was panting, looking like she might stop breathing any second.

"Jenny!" Vincent's eyes widened. He dropped the whip and ran to pick her up. "Doctor! Get a doctor!"

He looked back at me.

I was on the ground, watching everything without a care.

Vincent's anger burst out. "She's begging for you, and you don't care at all? Alice, do you have a heart of stone?"

He turned back and picked up the whip again. This time, he did not hesitate.

"If you won't learn your lesson, then take this!"

The whip cracked through the air and hit my back hard. Everything went black, and I almost fell over.

One, two, three... Ten times. Each strike tore my skin and spurted blood. My nails dug into the floor. Blood was everywhere. However, I did not scream, not even once.

After the last strike, I passed out.

Right before I did, I heard Vincent's cold order. "Put her in the basement. She can come out when she learns to say sorry."

Vincent tried to refuse to eat. He even tried to end his life by biting his tongue when he first got there. I had the doctors feed him through a tube and watch him around the clock. They tied him down and put a soft cork in his mouth."Want to die? It won't be that easy," I said, watching him struggle from outside his ward. "You're going to live and use every second to make up for what you've done."Every day, I made sure someone read him the newspaper, morning and night. He heard about how I was taking over business and gangs, how I was the star of fancy parties, and how I was admired by everyone.I wanted him to see how bright I shone without him."Queen dazzled at tonight's charity dinner in her custom-made gown, dancing with the mayor," the caregiver read emotionlessly.Vincent's tears fell silently, and he sobbed quietly. Vincent lay there, badly hurt.Jenny, who had seemed so gentle before, suddenly looked fierce. She kicked Vincent aside and whipped out a gun. Her moves were quick, her eyes dark and dangerous. She aimed the gun right at my head."What fools." Jenny laughed so hard that she started to cry. "After playing this game for so long, I'm exhausted."She ripped away her fake sweet facade to show a scary snarl. "I'm the secret daughter of the leader of Black Thorne, Raymond Thorne. Vincent, you wiped out my family five years ago and killed my dad. Did you think I'd forget?"Vincent stared at her as his hand bled, his face full of disbelief. "Jenny... You...""Be quiet!" Jenny's eyes burned with anger. "I was going to just end you, but then I saw that you had fallen for a regular woman."She poked my head with the gun. "Alice is your soft spot, the part of you that's still human. Killing you would be too easy. I knew I had to crush your spirit! I planned the kidnapping of Alice's mom. I ma

The following week, Vincent's places got hit one by one—casinos, docks, weapon stores. I knew the gang well and hit him where it hurt most.
