The police officer read through the incident report several times before looking at my husband, Greyson Lewis.

"You're telling me you want to press charges against your wife over twenty dollars? Are you sure you want to go through with this?"

Greyson leaned back in his chair. "She stole twenty dollars today. Tomorrow, she'll steal two thousand. She needs to learn her lesson."

The officer frowned deeply. "Your wife is twenty-two weeks pregnant. Taking twenty dollars to buy food because she was hungry in the middle of the night is a domestic dispute.

"And your wife says you cut off her living expenses because she gained weight during pregnancy?"

Greyson immediately turned to look at me. I instinctively drew my hands back at the look in his eyes.

"She weighed 98 pounds before she got pregnant. Now she's over 120. The doctor said pregnant women need to control their weight. I'm only doing this for her own good."

The officer was about to say something else, but I shook my head. "Forget it."

It was half past one in the morning when we left the police station.

Greyson glanced at the half-eaten burger in my hand. "We're walking home."

I froze. Our home was nearly two and a half miles away. "My stomach hurts a little."

Greyson checked his watch. "Funny how it didn't hurt when you were eating the burger. Walk faster. You'll burn another 200 calories."

With that, he strode ahead without waiting for me.

The night air was bitterly cold. Ever since I'd gotten pregnant, I'd been suffering from persistent pain around my pubic bone.

By the second intersection, the pain between my legs felt as though someone were grinding a dull knife into me.

Greyson turned around impatiently. "Alana Keller, what are you pretending to be in pain for now? Gracie's clients can power-walk three miles at seven months pregnant. You're barely past five months."

The moment I heard Gracie Bean's name, I fell silent. She was Greyson's college classmate and now ran a prenatal and postpartum fitness studio. Ever since she'd returned to the country, Greyson had started obsessively tracking my body fat, measurements, and diet every day.

It was nearly three in the morning by the time we got home. A brand-new digital scale sat beside the entryway.

Greyson pointed at it. "You just ate a burger and fries. I want to see how much damage one moment of indulgence can do."

I took off my shoes and stepped onto the scale. The numbers jumped to 136.2 pounds.

Greyson's expression darkened immediately. "You were 134.7 yesterday."

I tried to explain quietly. "It's normal for your weight to fluctuate throughout the day."

"Always an excuse."

He took a picture of the number and posted it in our group chat, which he'd named "Alana's Weight Loss Accountability Group".

At the top of the chat was a list of rules he'd drawn up himself.

Weigh in every Monday.

Gain one pound, lose $300 in living expenses. Gain two pounds, and get no living expenses the following week.

Eat a late-night snack, and go carb-free the next day. Get caught sneaking food, and walk an extra ten thousand steps.

Before I got pregnant, Greyson had never treated me this way.

Back then, if I said I wanted pizza in the middle of the night, he'd pull on his slippers and run three blocks to get it for me.

When my stomach hurt, he'd sit beside my bed and spoon-feed me broth.

When we lost our first baby, Greyson had been away negotiating a contract in another city. I spent the entire night in agony in our hotel room.

By the time the ambulance took me to the hospital, the baby was already gone.

Greyson rushed back and held me in his arms, crying for a long time. "When we have another baby, I swear I'll take care of both of you."

So when I got pregnant for the second time, and he told me to quit my job and focus on the pregnancy, I agreed without a moment's hesitation.

It wasn't until my third month of unemployment that I realized what focusing on my pregnancy really meant: giving up my ability to earn money first.

Greyson locked the kitchen. "Tomorrow, you're eating nothing but vegetables."

I stared at his back. "I haven't had my anatomy scan yet."

He stopped walking. "Do you think you can use the baby as an excuse to get whatever money you want out of me?"

I stood there, stunned. Just then, the baby inside me gave a sudden kick.

For some reason, my nose began to sting.

Standing outside the police station earlier, I'd actually thought about it. If Greyson hated how fat I'd gotten so much, wouldn't it be easier to just get rid of the baby?

But now that I could feel the baby moving inside me, I still couldn't bring myself to do it.

Six months later, I was eating three regular meals a day again.Every now and then, Jaylin still kept an eye on me. "Don't just drink coffee. What did you have for breakfast?"I'd pull a sandwich out of my bag to show her.I used to think having someone control what I ate was terrifying. Only later did I realize that the truly terrifying thing wasn't someone reminding you to eat. It was someone using food to punish you.Gracie's studio eventually shut down. She deleted every article involving me and issued a public apology.I never bothered to find out where she'd gone afterward.Greyson rarely contacted me either. He sent only one message a month: [How have you been feeling lately?]I never replied. At the company's annual physical, the last item on the list was a weigh-in.When it was my turn, I stood in front of the digital scale, suddenly unable to make my feet move. The nurse looked up. "Is something wrong?"I took several deep breaths. "I'm fine."I took off my shoes

The night I received the job offer, Greyson signed the divorce papers. When he handed the documents to the lawyer, he couldn't seem to let go."I have one more question. If our second baby were still alive, would you still divorce me?"The room fell silent for a few seconds.I nodded. "Yes."The last glimmer of hope in his eyes went out. "Why?"I suddenly remembered that night at the police station.Twenty dollars. Half a burger left uneaten. And his words: "Two nights in a cell might do her some good.""Because I'd already become afraid of you before anything happened to the baby."Greyson's expression stiffened. "Afraid of me?"I nodded with a bitter smile. "Afraid of stepping on a scale. Afraid of eating. Afraid my bank card would suddenly stop working."Afraid that if I gained a pound today, I wouldn't have money to buy anything tomorrow."Most of all, I was afraid that one day I'd get so hungry I couldn't stand it anymore, and you'd accuse me of giving in to my piggish

Gracie's article was taken down the next day.I submitted the screenshots and my medical records to the platform and filed a formal complaint. Her studio wasn't licensed to provide medical services, yet she'd been advertising pregnancy weight-loss programs and promoting carbohydrate restriction to control weight for a long time. Before long, several other pregnant women began leaving comments. One said she'd been told to do cardio on an empty stomach.Another said she'd been advised to eat only two meals a day because she'd been gaining weight too quickly.Gracie started calling me, but I didn't answer a single call. Then she showed up outside Jaylin's building and confronted me."Alana, are you determined to drive me to my grave?" She took off her sunglasses. The injury she'd claimed would disfigure her face had faded to a faint red mark.I looked at her. "Aren't you the expert at controlling things? Then why don't you try controlling your emotions?"Gracie's face turned liv

Two days later, Jaylin handed me her phone. "Take a look at this."There was an article from six months earlier on Gracie's studio's social media account. The headline read: [Uncontrolled Pregnancy Weight Gain Isn't the Problem. The Real Challenge Is Getting Family Members to Be Tough.]The photos didn't show the woman's face, but I recognized myself at a glance. I was wearing the gray pajamas I'd had on when I was four months pregnant.Beside the photo was a chart of my weight, from 110 pounds to 127, then 136.2.The article said: [Case A: Poor self-control. Frequently requests additional meals, claiming the fetus needs more nutrition.][After eliminating carbohydrates at dinner, increasing daily steps, and imposing financial restrictions through family members, her rate of weight gain dropped significantly.]I stared at the screen for a long time, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone. Those days when I'd been so ashamed of myself that I couldn't bear to loo

Jaylin took me back to her place.By the time we had driven a long way from the hospital, I realized Greyson was still standing outside the entrance.Jaylin glanced in the rearview mirror. "Are you really going through with the divorce?"I rested my hand on my now-flat stomach. "Both of my babies have already made the decision for me."Jaylin didn't try to talk me out of it again. For the next few days, I threw up everything I ate.It wasn't because my stomach couldn't handle the food. Every time I took another bite, Greyson's voice echoed in my head. "Too greasy. No carbs. You've gained weight again."When Jaylin saw me drinking only half a bowl of broth, she slammed her cutlery onto the table in anger. "Alana, you don't need anyone's permission to eat anymore."I sat there stunned for a long time before finally picking up my spoon again. On the sixth day, Greyson showed up.When I opened the door, his eyes immediately fell on the bowl of homemade beef broth on the table. I looked at him and lowered my head to touch my stomach, which had already flattened. "The baby is gone."All the color drained from Greyson's face. "What do you mean, gone?"He rushed toward me in a few strides. "Alana, did you get an abortion?"I stared at him for two seconds before suddenly bursting out laughing. But as I laughed, tears began streaming down my face."Didn't you keep complaining that I was fat? Well, there you go. I've lost more than ten pounds all at once."Greyson reached out to grab me.The nurse immediately stepped between us. "Sir, she just had an induced delivery. Don't touch her."Greyson looked at her in disbelief. "Induced delivery?"The nurse frowned. "She suffered a placental abruption and was already hemorrhaging heavily when she arrived. We couldn't save the baby."On top of that, she'd been severely undernourished for a prolonged period and was seriously anemic. She also had obvious bruising from an impact injury."Greyson went completely rigi
