Chapter 1

Brielle saw me first.

She rushed outside and grabbed my hand.

"Nora! See? I told you you'd be fine.

"Come on. I ordered your favorite beef."

Lucas followed her out.

He was carrying Brielle's coat.

"Why are you running around like that?

"You just got over a cold."

He remembered that Brielle had been sick.

He didn't seem to notice the state I was in.

I held out my hand to Brielle.

"I'm not hungry.

"Give me my phone."

Lucas stepped between us, already irritated.

"Nora, stop sulking.

"Brielle got out of bed to wait for you even though she's just recovered. Come inside and stop making a scene."

I looked at him.

My heart felt torn to shreds.

"Lucas.

"Whose boyfriend are you?"

He froze.

Then he looked away.

The silence turned awkward.

Brielle suddenly burst into tears.

She pulled my phone from her bag and slammed it onto the ground.

"Fine!

"Forget I tried to help.

"Nora, I'll never interfere in your life again."

She covered her face and ran.

Lucas lasted less than three seconds before chasing after her.

Cold wind dried the tears on my cheeks.

Three years ago, when Lucas and I first started dating, his friends had laughed at him for dating an idiot.

That was the first time I ever saw him lose his temper.

He held my hand tightly.

"Nora is the woman I chose.

"If you're my friends, you don't get to make jokes that humiliate her.

"So what if she has no sense of direction?

"I'll take care of her for the rest of my life."

I wiped away the last tear.

His back disappeared around the corner.

Lucas, apparently forever only lasted three years.

I went back to the lodge and started packing.

I still couldn't find my phone.

It was after midnight when Lucas and Brielle finally returned, one after the other.

Brielle carried a luxury shopping bag.

I walked over and held out my hand.

"My phone."

Lucas pulled it casually from his pocket.

The moment I reached for it, he let go.

The phone hit the floor.

A long crack split across the screen.

They stepped over it and sat down on the couch, still talking to each other.

"Nora, go ask the front desk for the soup I ordered.

"Brielle got chilled when she ran outside."

Brielle smiled while admiring the new bag.

Then she looked at me.

"Sweetie, thank you."

I picked up my phone.

Then I took my suitcase and opened the door.

Lucas finally came after me.

He grabbed my wrist.

"Nora, what is wrong with you now?

"Fine, I know you're still angry because we left you in the mountains.

"But we were trying to help you.

"We're supposed to get married soon. Don't ruin everything over something this small."

"Small?"

I turned and pulled up my sleeves and pant legs.

Cuts from branches crossed my skin.

"I walked for an entire day and night.

When I came back, did you even ask if I was okay?

"You didn't.

"You cared that Brielle hadn't eaten."

I dropped the fabric back into place and pulled free from him.

"I am not marrying you.

"Because we're already over."

Lucas dropped to his knees in front of me.He held out the cake like an offering."Nora, look."It's mango."The birthday cake you wanted last time before Brielle ruined everything."Two years ago, Lucas had promised me a mango cake for my birthday. Then Brielle casually said strawberry tasted better. He changed the order. On my own birthday, I stood beside them while they laughed and blew out my candles together.I looked at the cake now.I felt nothing.Lucas pulled a dress from one of the bags."And this."You saw it first."Brielle said it wouldn't suit you, so I gave it to her instead."That was my fault."Nora, please forgive me."Then he reached for the old pillow.I stopped him."Don't."That pillow doesn't matter anymore.""It does."His eyes filled with tears."Those are our memories."Nora, I'm begging you."Give me one more chance."I regret it every day."I was wrong."I know I was wrong.""Lucas."I waited until he stopped."You didn't sudde

A few days later, I made arrangements to leave my apartment. Then I took Mom's photograph and returned to my hometown. She used to tell me that once I married, she'd move back there, get a dog, grow vegetables, and live out her days in peace. It took me more than a month to repair the little house with a yard.It wasn't large. I turned the soil, put up a simple fence, and cleaned out the sunniest bedroom. Most days, I either researched how to improve the garden soil or ordered ridiculous numbers of vegetable seeds online.A few weeks later, I decided to visit a pet store and choose a puppy.Halfway there, I saw a small yellow dog curled against a wall.He was maybe three months old, shivering and watching everyone who passed with frightened eyes.I took him to a vet for his shots and a full checkup. He was healthy and quiet. He didn't make a sound through the whole visit.I took him home. For days, he stayed in one corner except when he ate.So I bought far too many toys,

Brielle ran toward the screen."Turn it off!"Turn it off!"Nobody look at it!"Get out!"She tried to block the display with her body.It didn't matter.I'd found this material by accident while collecting evidence.Brielle had been seeing someone for years. Her boyfriend, Evan Brooks, was terminally ill.His treatment required money she didn't have.At first, Brielle and I had only been coworkers. We weren't close. Then, during a company outing, a man harassed me on the way to the restroom.Brielle stepped in.She got me out of it.Because I'd always struggled with directions, I never made friends easily. After that day, Brielle helped me constantly at work. When coworkers went out, she stayed close so I wouldn't get separated.I trusted her.Eventually, I told her everything.I never realized how calculated it was.At some point, she began joining every date Lucas and I planned. In the beginning, Lucas complained that she was ruining our time alone.Later, my

The ballroom erupted.Mrs. Wentworth had always cared more about appearances than almost anything else. When I first visited, she'd fed me leftovers. Then she'd posted a whole gallery of beautiful food on social media, bragging that she'd prepared it specially for her future daughter-in-law.Now that I'd exposed her in front of everyone, her face turned an ugly shade of purple. As the whispers grew louder, she started breathing rapidly."My heart."Lucas, call an ambulance."Lucas reached for his phone. Then the second recording began to play. His hand stopped."Brielle, your idea really was perfect."Mrs. Wentworth's recorded voice filled the room."Pretend I'm sick, and Lucas will finally marry you."Onscreen, Brielle sat beside her hospital bed peeling an apple."Mrs. Wentworth, you must be exhausted."All those tests."Staying in the hospital just to keep the act going."Mrs. Wentworth laughed."Exhausted? Please."I'll do anything if it means you and Lucas end

The screen went black.Phones appeared throughout the audience.I had prepared three pieces of evidence. The first was security footage from the luxury boutique.Lucas and Brielle entered together. The camera clearly showed Lucas unlocking my phone and transferring money out of my account.Lucas's face went pale.He grabbed my wrist."Nora, are you seriously still making a scene over that money?"I pulled free and raised the microphone."Everyone here should know something."While Lucas Wentworth was still dating me, he transferred money out of my account without permission and used it to buy a luxury bag for my best friend, Brielle Fontaine."I know his family is here."His friends."His coworkers."So let me ask all of you."Would you trust someone who treats another person's bank account like this?""Don't listen to her."Lucas ripped the microphone from my hand and threw it to the floor."We were already broken up.""Really?"I nodded toward the screen.A phot

I didn't answer.I only looked at him.Lucas lowered his head."My mom hasn't been doing well."She recently had surgery, and recovery hasn't gone smoothly."Her only wish is to see me settled."He sighed."You know she never approved of you because of your sense of direction."Now the money for the house is gone too."There's no chance she'll agree."She likes Brielle."And Brielle is willing to go through with the wedding.""Lucas."I stood. My voice was flat."Who you marry has nothing to do with me."Get out."Neither my mother nor I want you here."Lucas didn't move. After a long silence, he spoke again."Everyone knows we were supposed to marry."If I suddenly marry your best friend, people are going to talk about Brielle."She's sensitive."She can't take that kind of gossip."He took my hand."If you come to the wedding and publicly give us your blessing, nobody will say anything."Don't worry."The wedding is just for show."It's just to calm my mot
