Chapter 2

Author: Rivermore
I turned and walked away without looking back.

Lucas tried to follow me.

Then Brielle coughed once.

His footsteps stopped.

I laughed at myself.

Whatever last bit of hope I'd carried finally disappeared.

At the airport, I closed the map on my phone and let out a long breath.

Mom called almost immediately.

"Sweetheart, how was the trip with Lucas?

"When are you coming home?

"Mrs. Kelly next door was asking again. She says she can't wait for the wedding..."

"Mom."

My voice went quiet.

"There isn't going to be a wedding.

"Lucas and I broke up."

Mom went silent.

When she spoke again, I could hear the emotion in her voice.

"Okay.

"That's okay.

"You just come home safe.

"I'll make you something good when you get here."

My eyes stung.

I bit my lip.

After the call ended, I put my head down on my knees and cried.

My heart had no visible wound.

It still felt like it was dying.

Once the first crack appeared, every emotion I'd been holding back came spilling out.

I changed my phone wallpaper, then opened my photos—three years of pictures with Lucas—and hit Delete All.

At the beginning, he used to get jealous if a male coworker spoke to me too long.

He picked me up after work every day.

He insisted our couple photo be my lock screen.

He never forgot a birthday or anniversary.

Everyone told me I'd never find another man who treated me that well.

I believed them.

He'd fought with his parents over me, lost friends defending me, and held my hand in public as if letting go for even a second would mean losing me.

"Nora, you're as adorable as a little kid.

"I've got to watch you carefully.

"If you ever get lost, I'll never forgive myself."

Three years later, he and Brielle abandoned me in the mountains without a phone.

Apparently devotion could evaporate that quickly.

When my flight landed, I went straight to the sales office for the apartment I'd been planning to buy.

My income was stable.

I received an annual bonus.

In fact, I'd wanted a place that belonged only to me before Lucas and I ever started talking about marriage.

Later, he suggested it could become our marital home.

That was the only reason his family had finally stopped objecting to me.

Now that we were over, the apartment was still something I'd chosen for myself.

I gave the salesperson my card for the down payment. Declined. She tried again. Declined.

The woman who'd been smiling at me five minutes earlier looked annoyed.

"If you can't afford it, don't waste our time.

"We have other customers."

"There has to be a mistake."

Then I remembered.

Lucas and Brielle had kept my phone for hours.

My bank account was linked to it.

My hands started shaking as I called Lucas.

He answered quickly.

"Where did the money in my account go?"

He laughed.

"Looks like Brielle was right.

"Ignore you long enough and you come running back.

"So?

"Ready to admit you overreacted?"

I gripped the phone.

"I'm asking one last time.

"Did you transfer money out of my account?"

His voice became impatient.

"Nora, you called me over money?

"I used some yesterday.

"I bought Brielle a bag."

The world went black.

I nearly fell, and my heart pounded like it was about to burst out of my chest.

That luxury shopping bag.

Her little thank-you.

Now I understood.

My whole body shook.

Everything blurred.

"Lucas, what gave you the right?

"That was my down payment."

He sounded completely unconcerned.

"Why are you separating yours and mine like we're strangers?

"I did it for you anyway.

"Brielle was furious yesterday. If I hadn't calmed her down, do you think she'd have forgiven you that quickly?

"She's your best friend, not mine.

"I'm helping you and you're blaming me?

"When did you become this unreasonable?"

"Lucas—"

He hung up.

I stood frozen outside the sales office, cold all the way through.

Then I called a car and went straight to the police.

"I need to report an unauthorized transfer from my account."

Lucas dropped to his knees in front of me.He held out the cake like an offering."Nora, look."It's mango."The birthday cake you wanted last time before Brielle ruined everything."Two years ago, Lucas had promised me a mango cake for my birthday. Then Brielle casually said strawberry tasted better. He changed the order. On my own birthday, I stood beside them while they laughed and blew out my candles together.I looked at the cake now.I felt nothing.Lucas pulled a dress from one of the bags."And this."You saw it first."Brielle said it wouldn't suit you, so I gave it to her instead."That was my fault."Nora, please forgive me."Then he reached for the old pillow.I stopped him."Don't."That pillow doesn't matter anymore.""It does."His eyes filled with tears."Those are our memories."Nora, I'm begging you."Give me one more chance."I regret it every day."I was wrong."I know I was wrong.""Lucas."I waited until he stopped."You didn't sudde

A few days later, I made arrangements to leave my apartment. Then I took Mom's photograph and returned to my hometown. She used to tell me that once I married, she'd move back there, get a dog, grow vegetables, and live out her days in peace. It took me more than a month to repair the little house with a yard.It wasn't large. I turned the soil, put up a simple fence, and cleaned out the sunniest bedroom. Most days, I either researched how to improve the garden soil or ordered ridiculous numbers of vegetable seeds online.A few weeks later, I decided to visit a pet store and choose a puppy.Halfway there, I saw a small yellow dog curled against a wall.He was maybe three months old, shivering and watching everyone who passed with frightened eyes.I took him to a vet for his shots and a full checkup. He was healthy and quiet. He didn't make a sound through the whole visit.I took him home. For days, he stayed in one corner except when he ate.So I bought far too many toys,

Brielle ran toward the screen."Turn it off!"Turn it off!"Nobody look at it!"Get out!"She tried to block the display with her body.It didn't matter.I'd found this material by accident while collecting evidence.Brielle had been seeing someone for years. Her boyfriend, Evan Brooks, was terminally ill.His treatment required money she didn't have.At first, Brielle and I had only been coworkers. We weren't close. Then, during a company outing, a man harassed me on the way to the restroom.Brielle stepped in.She got me out of it.Because I'd always struggled with directions, I never made friends easily. After that day, Brielle helped me constantly at work. When coworkers went out, she stayed close so I wouldn't get separated.I trusted her.Eventually, I told her everything.I never realized how calculated it was.At some point, she began joining every date Lucas and I planned. In the beginning, Lucas complained that she was ruining our time alone.Later, my

The ballroom erupted.Mrs. Wentworth had always cared more about appearances than almost anything else. When I first visited, she'd fed me leftovers. Then she'd posted a whole gallery of beautiful food on social media, bragging that she'd prepared it specially for her future daughter-in-law.Now that I'd exposed her in front of everyone, her face turned an ugly shade of purple. As the whispers grew louder, she started breathing rapidly."My heart."Lucas, call an ambulance."Lucas reached for his phone. Then the second recording began to play. His hand stopped."Brielle, your idea really was perfect."Mrs. Wentworth's recorded voice filled the room."Pretend I'm sick, and Lucas will finally marry you."Onscreen, Brielle sat beside her hospital bed peeling an apple."Mrs. Wentworth, you must be exhausted."All those tests."Staying in the hospital just to keep the act going."Mrs. Wentworth laughed."Exhausted? Please."I'll do anything if it means you and Lucas end

The screen went black.Phones appeared throughout the audience.I had prepared three pieces of evidence. The first was security footage from the luxury boutique.Lucas and Brielle entered together. The camera clearly showed Lucas unlocking my phone and transferring money out of my account.Lucas's face went pale.He grabbed my wrist."Nora, are you seriously still making a scene over that money?"I pulled free and raised the microphone."Everyone here should know something."While Lucas Wentworth was still dating me, he transferred money out of my account without permission and used it to buy a luxury bag for my best friend, Brielle Fontaine."I know his family is here."His friends."His coworkers."So let me ask all of you."Would you trust someone who treats another person's bank account like this?""Don't listen to her."Lucas ripped the microphone from my hand and threw it to the floor."We were already broken up.""Really?"I nodded toward the screen.A phot

I didn't answer.I only looked at him.Lucas lowered his head."My mom hasn't been doing well."She recently had surgery, and recovery hasn't gone smoothly."Her only wish is to see me settled."He sighed."You know she never approved of you because of your sense of direction."Now the money for the house is gone too."There's no chance she'll agree."She likes Brielle."And Brielle is willing to go through with the wedding.""Lucas."I stood. My voice was flat."Who you marry has nothing to do with me."Get out."Neither my mother nor I want you here."Lucas didn't move. After a long silence, he spoke again."Everyone knows we were supposed to marry."If I suddenly marry your best friend, people are going to talk about Brielle."She's sensitive."She can't take that kind of gossip."He took my hand."If you come to the wedding and publicly give us your blessing, nobody will say anything."Don't worry."The wedding is just for show."It's just to calm my mot
