Chapter 13: Standing up for her

(Luca Delacroix POV)

I was ready to punch my father in the face. He had been pushing me to the wall for years now. I understood that being part of this family only meant I had to be a blood relation—but I wasn’t.

Although my father never told me out loud, I know he couldn’t stand taking care of me. What’s worse: being told you’re an orphan and being let go of, or being given everything but, at the same time, told you will never truly be part of the family?

“You are holding her here against her will. It’s against the law,” I said gently—not because I feared him, but because I was keeping my emotions at bay.

“I am her father. My job is to protect her.”

“Obviously you didn’t explain to her well enough, Father. She does not see it the way you do.”

“That girl has no idea what she stepped into. If she leaves this house, she won’t last,” my father responded cryptically.

“She is strong. She has lived without us.”
