Chapter 2

Author: Fifteen
Right then, my phone buzzed again. The property manager sent another message.

[Mr. Dawson, a resident wants to sign the contract tomorrow at noon. Does that work for you?]

I replied, [That works.]

Across the table, Ronald smiled at me. "Give me a heads-up the next time you're working late. I'll leave you a plate."

I looked at him. "Don't bother."

His smile faded. I pushed my plate away and stood. "I'm full."

Alicia's tone sharpened. "Chase, what is it now?"

I didn't explain.

For a long time, I thought I just needed to find the right words to get through to her. In truth, Alicia understood what bothered me. She simply didn't consider it a problem.

As I shut the bedroom door, Ronald lowered his voice. "What did I do this time?"

"Nothing," Alicia said gently. "He's been stressed lately. Just give him some space."

I paused inside the bedroom. Light from the living room spilled under the door, and soon they were laughing again.

Neither of them seemed to miss me at the table. By then, it was clear how long I had been living in a home where there was no room for me.

The next morning, messages flooded the group chat the three of us shared.

Ronald sent the first few.

[What's your deal, Chase? All this over a parking spot?]

Alicia jumped in. [Don't take it personally. He's under a lot of pressure at work. You didn't do it on purpose. You have nothing to feel bad about.]

I read their messages on the subway, my grip tightening around my phone.

I paid for that space. Every day Ronald blocked it, I was the one who parked half a mile away and walked home.

Yet there they were, discussing my attitude as though that was the only problem.

I left the messages unanswered.

At noon, I took time off work and went to the property management office to sign the contract.

The manager gave it one last try. "It's a great spot. You're sure you wanna sell?"

I picked up the pen. "Positive."

Signing my name brought a small measure of relief. No more standing in the garage, waiting for someone to bother moving a car so I could use the space I owned.

After work, I drove into the garage beneath our building.

I spotted Ronald's white car before I reached the space. Its nose crossed the line, and the back end stuck out at an angle. He parked like he owned the spaces on either side of him.

I sat behind the wheel for a moment and gave a short laugh.

Of course nothing changed. As far as Ronald was concerned, he could park wherever he wanted.

I pulled into a short-term space and went upstairs.

Before I got my key into the lock, I heard laughter inside.

"Good thing you jumped on it," Ronald said. "Someone else buys that spot, and I'm out of luck."

Alicia laughed. "I told you I'd take care of it. Buying it was the important part. We can figure out the rest later."

I stopped with the key in my hand.

Alicia turned out to be the buyer.

After a pause, Ronald asked, "How's Chase gonna take it?"

"Oh, he's just in a mood," she said. "Give him a couple of days. I'll talk him around."

"And if he tells me I can't park there?"

"It's my space now. He doesn't get to decide."

I stood outside the door, my key still in my hand.

I signed those papers thinking I was finally done with the whole arrangement. As it turned out, Alicia went behind my back and bought the space so Ronald could keep taking it over.

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 10

Back overseas, I settled into a routine I liked.Work kept regular hours. I had a comfortable apartment and a parking space I could actually use. Every evening, I drove home and pulled into the garage without giving it a second thought. On clear weekends, I took the car out for a drive. When it rained, I stretched out on the couch and put on a movie. Some nights, I had dinner with coworkers. Other days, I drove to a nearby town and checked out the local grocery stores. It wasn't an exciting life, but it suited me. I knew what to expect when I came home. One evening after work, I parked and stayed behind the wheel for a minute. The garage was quiet, its overhead lights casting an even glow on the gray wall ahead.Sitting there, I remembered how often I used to come home and find my space blocked.Ronald's car would be angled across the line, and Alicia would tell me, "Just park outside tonight. Don't give him a hard time."I always gave in. Compromise was part of a relationship,

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 9

A year later, I flew home for a short business trip. The sun was out when I landed, and my driver was waiting by the time I rolled my suitcase out of the terminal. On the ride into town, I watched the familiar streets and buildings pass. The city looked much the same as when I left.Work kept me busy for three days. Once everything was wrapped up, I went to see my parents.Mom stopped short when she opened the door, then reached for my suitcase. "You've lost weight again. Are you eating properly over there?"I brought the suitcase inside. "Work's been busy."Neither of them brought up Alicia over dinner.Mom asked about my apartment, my job, and whether I was making friends. Dad mostly listened, occasionally telling me not to work so late. After dinner, he slid a folder across the table."This is everything Alicia paid you back after the wedding was called off."I opened it and looked through the paperwork. The shared expenses were all itemized, from the wedding planner's fee

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 8

By my second rainy season abroad, I settled into a routine.I kept up with the car maintenance and handled small repairs around the apartment. If something needed more work, I called someone in.When I worked late, I picked up dinner on the way home. On weekends, I drove to a supermarket outside the city and stocked up for the week.I expected living alone to be harder. It turned out that wasn't what wore me down.It was having to make excuses for people who kept pushing my limits when I was already running on empty. That evening, rain hammered the windshield as I waited at a red light. The wipers swept steadily back and forth, and warm air blew from the vents.Sitting there, I remembered that night in the rain back home.I had parked half a mile away and walked home with my work bag slung over my shoulder. My shoes were soaked, and my wet clothes clung to my skin. The whole way, I tried to talk myself out of getting angry. Ronald would apologize. Alicia would say she was cau

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 7

A little over a month after the wedding fell apart, Alicia visited my parents.Mom told me about it after I finished an international conference call. My throat was sore from talking, and I was still going over my notes when she called. She asked if I had eaten, then got to the reason for her call. "Alicia came by today."I stopped writing. "What did she want?""To apologize."According to Mom, Alicia brought several bags of gifts and waited outside their door for a long time. Dad didn't want to let her in, but eventually, he relented.Once inside, she admitted she was wrong to buy my parking space behind my back. She also acknowledged that her relationship with Ronald crossed the line.Mom hesitated before going on. "She said she drank too much on the wedding night. That's how she explained what happened."I gave a short laugh. "Of course she did."Until I left, Alicia never had to face the consequences of her choices. Those always fell to me.She told me not to make a big d

Life abroad turned out to be simpler. Most days, I went from home to work and back, with the occasional stop for groceries. Leaving at 7 a.m. and getting home at 10 p.m. became routine. Some nights, I was too tired to bother turning on the lights. Still, a long day at work was easier to recover from than another evening with Alicia and Ronald.I settled in quickly. There was a convenience store downstairs and a coffee shop around the corner. On weekends, I bought groceries for the week. Everything in the fridge was something I actually wanted to eat.Only my jacket hung by the door, and only my toiletries sat on the bathroom counter. I liked living alone. I could finally come home without finding someone else making himself comfortable at my expense.News from back home still reached me.The wedding video spread fast. At first, plenty of people blamed me for leaving Alicia at the altar and humiliating her family in front of everyone they knew. Then the rest of the story start

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 5

My flight landed just after dawn. A thin fog hung over the airport beneath a pale morning sky.I stood outside the terminal with my suitcase and my phone still off. After days of constant calls and messages, the quiet took some getting used to.I didn't switch it on until that afternoon. Notifications filled the screen before I could open anything. There were dozens of missed calls from my parents. Mutual friends sent screenshots and voice messages faster than the app could load them.At the top of the list was a video from the wedding. I tapped it.Alicia stood at the altar with her veil crooked, her face tight with anger. Beside her, the officiant held his microphone and struggled to keep smiling as whispers spread through the guests.Ronald stood at her side in a light-colored suit. He didn't look like a groomsman waiting for instructions or a guest who stepped up to help. He looked comfortable beside her."Did the groom actually walk out on her?" someone whispered."Wait, i
