Chapter 3

Author: Black Scale
I wasn't riding along for the on-road lesson the next day.

But Mr. Cross asked me to pick up some paperwork from the intersection on the South Loop. It happened to be one of the routes the driving school regularly used for on-road lessons.

The moment I reached the intersection, a barrage of impatient horns pierced the air.

Coach Lawson's white training car was stopped in the right-turn lane, with traffic backed up behind it.

Behind the wheel sat Melody. She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles had turned white. Her face was even paler.

Coach Lawson sat in the passenger seat. The relaxed confidence he'd shown the day before was nowhere to be found.

"Take your foot off the brake and give it some gas! Everyone behind us is waiting!"

Melody looked ready to burst into tears. "There's an e-bike on my right. I can't."

From the back seat, Sienna rolled her eyes. "It's not even close. Move over. I'll drive."

The words had barely left her mouth when an e-bike shot across the front of the car from the right.

Startled, Melody slammed her foot down, and the car lurched forward.

Coach Lawson's face drained of color as he stomped on the instructor brake, but he was half a beat too late.

The front bumper clipped the rear of the e-bike. A plastic crate flew off the back, sending fruit rolling across the pavement.

The woman riding the bike fell to the ground and immediately pointed at the car while shouting, "Are you trying to kill me? Who taught you how to drive?"

Melody burst into tears.

Sienna shoved the door open, spotted me standing nearby, and her expression instantly darkened. "Sutton? What are you doing here? Watching us make fools of ourselves?"

"I was just passing by."

She let out a cold laugh. "Cut the act. Melody's just a terrible driver. This has nothing to do with Coach Lawson."

The fruit vendor's temper flared the moment she heard that. "Who are you calling a terrible driver? Weren't you the one rushing her a second ago?"

Sienna's expression stiffened.

Coach Lawson hurried out of the car with an apologetic smile. "It was just an accident. The student's nervous. Let's talk this through."

The woman grabbed the car door and refused to let go. "Talk it through? You're paying for the damage! Then you're taking me to the ER!"

In the end, Mr. Cross had to come personally. He paid for the damages and accompanied the woman to the hospital before the situation was finally brought under control.

Back at the driving school, Mr. Cross chewed Coach Lawson out until his face turned pale.

"Weren't you the one preaching relaxed instruction yesterday? Relaxed enough to almost hit someone at an intersection?"

Coach Lawson answered through gritted teeth, "Melody's reactions were just too slow."

From the doorway, Melody suddenly looked up. "Coach Lawson, you told me to hit the gas."

He froze.

Her eyes brimmed with tears. "I told you I was scared. Sienna kept rushing me, and both of you kept saying I'd be fine."

Sienna immediately grabbed her arm. "Melody, don't start making things up."

Melody shook her off. "I'm not making anything up! I told everyone yesterday that I still couldn't tell the gas from the brake, and you recorded a video making fun of me!"

The office fell silent.

Mr. Cross turned toward me. "Harper, what do you think?"

I cut him off. "Mr. Cross, I already handed the class over."

Sienna glared at me. "You're just waiting for us to come crawling back, aren't you?"

She walked up until we were face-to-face, lowering her voice. "I'm telling you right now—it'll never happen. Today was just an accident. I'll pass my mock road test just fine."

I nodded. "I hope you do."

More than anything, she hated seeing me stay calm. Sure enough, her eyes immediately reddened. "Sutton, stop acting so righteous. Weren't you so strict because you were afraid we'd ruin your reputation if something happened?"

I met her gaze. "It was never my reputation I was worried about. I was worried you'd treat someone else's life like it was just another driving lesson."

Her expression changed. "Stop using people's lives to guilt-trip me."

That afternoon, the driving school postponed all twelve students' mock road tests and required each of them to complete an additional driving assessment before rescheduling.

The notice had barely gone out when Sienna stormed into the office and slammed her phone onto the desk.

"Why was my test postponed? Was this your doing?"

Mr. Cross's face hardened. "You almost hit someone today, and you still think you're ready to test tomorrow? What makes you think you're ready?"

Sienna clenched her fists. Then she smiled. "Fine. If none of you will let me take the test, I'll practice on my own."

I looked up at her.

The defiance burning in her eyes was even stronger than it had been the day before.

Six months later, at the driving school's annual safety conference, I received the Gold Instructor Award once again. As Mr. Cross handed me the trophy, he gave me an awkward smile."Harper, I was wrong. I used to worry that complaints looked bad and refunds would hurt business."But I finally realized the biggest threat to a driving school isn't a low pass rate. It's putting people on the road who never should've been there in the first place."Applause filled the room.I accepted the trophy without a polished speech.I simply said, "An instructor can teach someone how to drive. But whether they choose to respect the road is up to them."After the conference ended, I spotted Sienna in the parking lot. She'd lost a lot of weight, and her hair was cut short. She stood beside a rideshare car holding a bag of fruit. The moment she saw me, she froze."Coach Sutton."I stopped walking. She held out the fruit. "I'm not here to ask for your help. I just wanted to apologize."I did

Sienna wasn't ready to give up.Three days after the accountability meeting, she uploaded another long video. This time, she wasn't crying. She sat in front of the camera, pale and composed, her voice barely above a whisper."I admit I made mistakes. But Coach Sutton has taken away every path I had left. My family can't afford to pay that much money, and the driving school terminated my training."I just want a chance to start over. Why won't anyone give me one?"The sympathy started pouring back in.[The girl made a mistake, but does she really deserve to have her whole life ruined?][Isn't the instructor a little too ruthless?][What adult hasn't made mistakes?]When I saw the video, Mr. Cross was in his office, cursing under his breath. "How does she still have the nerve to play the victim?"I didn't answer.I simply sent him the last piece of evidence. It was a set of screenshots Melody had forwarded from the group's private chat. Before the accident that night, Sienna

On the day of the formal accountability meeting, the conference room was packed with parents.Three documents sat on the table: the accident report, a preliminary breakdown of the damages, and the insurance adjuster's findings.Mr. Cross slid the cost summary across the table."Vehicle repairs and write-off losses, property repairs, suspended training losses, medical examinations, and compensation for the custodian. The current estimate is $396,000."The room erupted."How can it cost that much? Is this driving school trying to rob us?""They're just kids! They only drove a couple of laps! How does that turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars?""What about the insurance?"The insurance adjuster opened his report."Coverage only applies to legal, authorized training sessions. Stealing the keys, driving after hours without authorization, and livestreaming the incident fall outside the policy."His words silenced the room.Mr. Vaughn's face darkened. "Your school also failed

The next morning, the entrance to the driving school was packed. Some people stood outside filming the training grounds with their phones.Others flooded the comments demanding the school fire me.Mr. Cross hadn't slept all night."Harper, take a few days off from teaching."I looked at him. "Are you suspending my classes, or suspending me?"He avoided my gaze. "Just a temporary suspension from instruction until the investigation is finished."I let out a quiet laugh. "So we're smoothing things over again."A few days ago, when Sienna and the others had petitioned to replace me, he'd asked me to swallow my pride. Now she'd nearly run someone over, then turned around and blamed me. Once again, I was the one being told to step aside.I placed a document folder on his desk."Fine. But before I stop teaching, release these."Mr. Cross opened the folder. His expression changed instantly. There was a petition asking to replace their instructor signed by twelve students, the volu

By the time the ambulance arrived, Sienna was still shaking. She wasn't seriously hurt. The airbag had only left her face red and scraped.Mason had a gash along his temple. The loudmouth who usually loved stirring everyone up could only groan in pain now.The night custodian sat off to one side, her hands trembling so badly she couldn't even hold a cup of water.Mr. Cross pulled up the security footage, and his expression grew darker with every second. In the footage, everything was revealed.Mason climbed through the office window to steal the keys. Sienna got behind the wheel. I tried to stop them, then Mason shoved me. The car took off and nearly hit the custodian.Every moment was crystal clear. When Mr. Vaughn arrived, he didn't ask whether his daughter had done anything wrong.Instead, he pointed at me and shouted, "Did you push her into driving?"Mr. Cross's expression changed. By nine-thirty that night, the training grounds were already dark.I'd just reached the parking lot when I heard the metallic scrape of the back gate opening softly, like someone was trying not to get caught.I followed the wall around and saw the headlights of a spare training car flick on.Sienna was behind the wheel. Mason sat in the passenger seat, and several other students were crammed into the back.Melody stood outside the car, looking like she was about to cry. "Sienna, please. Don't do this."Sienna rolled down the window. "If you're scared, then get lost."Mason held up his phone with a grin. "The livestream's up. Time to show everyone what a genius driver looks like after getting held back by that psycho instructor."Melody clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She tried several times to tap the screen, but someone beside her kept knocking her hand away.I stepped out."Kill the engine. Get out."Everyone inside the car jumped.Sienna's face we
