Chapter 4

Author: Black Scale
By nine-thirty that night, the training grounds were already dark.

I'd just reached the parking lot when I heard the metallic scrape of the back gate opening softly, like someone was trying not to get caught.

I followed the wall around and saw the headlights of a spare training car flick on.

Sienna was behind the wheel. Mason sat in the passenger seat, and several other students were crammed into the back.

Melody stood outside the car, looking like she was about to cry. "Sienna, please. Don't do this."

Sienna rolled down the window. "If you're scared, then get lost."

Mason held up his phone with a grin. "The livestream's up. Time to show everyone what a genius driver looks like after getting held back by that psycho instructor."

Melody clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She tried several times to tap the screen, but someone beside her kept knocking her hand away.

I stepped out.

"Kill the engine. Get out."

Everyone inside the car jumped.

Sienna's face went pale for a split second before hardening again. "What are you doing here?"

"I said get out."

Mason frowned. "You're not even our instructor anymore. Why do you care?"

I pulled out my phone. "Get out of the car now, and I'll handle this internally."

Sienna shoved the door open and stormed toward me. "Is tattling on people the only thing you're good at?"

I looked at her. "You took the keys without permission, started the car outside the training schedule, and you've got passengers inside. Sienna, do you have any idea who's responsible if something happens?"

She laughed. "There you go again. Sutton, is 'what if something happens' the only thing you ever know how to say?"

She lunged for my phone.

I stepped back.

Mason moved between us and shoved me hard in the shoulder.

My back slammed into the wall, and my knee crashed into a concrete parking stop beside it. Pain exploded through my leg, and my vision went black for a moment.

My phone hit the ground, but the voice recorder was still running.

Melody screamed, "Mason! What are you doing?"

Sienna froze for a moment, but she didn't stop.

"Let's go. Ignore her."

She climbed back into the driver's seat and slammed the door shut. The engine roared to life.

I shouted, "Sienna! Kill the engine!"

She ignored me.

Facing the livestream, Mason grinned. "Watch this. Who needs an instructor brake?"

The car circled the back lot, picking up speed with every lap. Near the side gate, the night custodian was bent over gathering her cleaning supplies.

Melody's voice cracked as she screamed, "There's someone ahead!"

Sienna jerked the wheel. The tires rolled over a traffic cone, and the car lurched violently sideways.

The students in the back erupted into screams.

"Brake!"

Instead, the engine roared even louder. She'd mistaken the gas for the brake.

The car shot straight toward the custodian.

I reacted on instinct, lunging forward and yanking her out of the way.

My old knee injury slammed into the pavement, and the pain was so intense I could barely get back to my feet.

A second later, the training car crashed into a parked spare vehicle beside the wall. White smoke billowed from the hood as the airbags exploded open.

Mason's forehead split open, blood running down past his eyebrow. Sienna slumped over the steering wheel, trembling from head to toe.

By the time Mr. Cross and the security guards rushed out, both of them had gone pale.

"Who was driving? Who took the keys?"

No one answered.

Sienna slowly raised her head and looked at me through the shattered windshield.

"Coach Sutton..."

It was the first time she'd called me "Coach" after something had gone wrong.

Bracing myself against the wall, I stood and handed my cracked phone to Mr. Cross. "The recording's on there. The security cameras back here were recording too."

One of the security guards noticed the phone on the center console was still livestreaming. He immediately recorded the screen with his own phone before saving the livestream footage.

The color slowly drained from Sienna's face.

In the distance, the wail of an ambulance grew louder.

Meanwhile, Mason's phone still sat on the center console with the livestream running.

Comments continued pouring in.

[Wasn't she saying she didn't need an instructor brake?]

[Was that instructor the one who threw herself in front of the car to save someone?]

[I thought they said Harper Sutton abandoned people instead of helping them?]

Six months later, at the driving school's annual safety conference, I received the Gold Instructor Award once again. As Mr. Cross handed me the trophy, he gave me an awkward smile."Harper, I was wrong. I used to worry that complaints looked bad and refunds would hurt business."But I finally realized the biggest threat to a driving school isn't a low pass rate. It's putting people on the road who never should've been there in the first place."Applause filled the room.I accepted the trophy without a polished speech.I simply said, "An instructor can teach someone how to drive. But whether they choose to respect the road is up to them."After the conference ended, I spotted Sienna in the parking lot. She'd lost a lot of weight, and her hair was cut short. She stood beside a rideshare car holding a bag of fruit. The moment she saw me, she froze."Coach Sutton."I stopped walking. She held out the fruit. "I'm not here to ask for your help. I just wanted to apologize."I did

Sienna wasn't ready to give up.Three days after the accountability meeting, she uploaded another long video. This time, she wasn't crying. She sat in front of the camera, pale and composed, her voice barely above a whisper."I admit I made mistakes. But Coach Sutton has taken away every path I had left. My family can't afford to pay that much money, and the driving school terminated my training."I just want a chance to start over. Why won't anyone give me one?"The sympathy started pouring back in.[The girl made a mistake, but does she really deserve to have her whole life ruined?][Isn't the instructor a little too ruthless?][What adult hasn't made mistakes?]When I saw the video, Mr. Cross was in his office, cursing under his breath. "How does she still have the nerve to play the victim?"I didn't answer.I simply sent him the last piece of evidence. It was a set of screenshots Melody had forwarded from the group's private chat. Before the accident that night, Sienna

On the day of the formal accountability meeting, the conference room was packed with parents.Three documents sat on the table: the accident report, a preliminary breakdown of the damages, and the insurance adjuster's findings.Mr. Cross slid the cost summary across the table."Vehicle repairs and write-off losses, property repairs, suspended training losses, medical examinations, and compensation for the custodian. The current estimate is $396,000."The room erupted."How can it cost that much? Is this driving school trying to rob us?""They're just kids! They only drove a couple of laps! How does that turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars?""What about the insurance?"The insurance adjuster opened his report."Coverage only applies to legal, authorized training sessions. Stealing the keys, driving after hours without authorization, and livestreaming the incident fall outside the policy."His words silenced the room.Mr. Vaughn's face darkened. "Your school also failed

The next morning, the entrance to the driving school was packed. Some people stood outside filming the training grounds with their phones.Others flooded the comments demanding the school fire me.Mr. Cross hadn't slept all night."Harper, take a few days off from teaching."I looked at him. "Are you suspending my classes, or suspending me?"He avoided my gaze. "Just a temporary suspension from instruction until the investigation is finished."I let out a quiet laugh. "So we're smoothing things over again."A few days ago, when Sienna and the others had petitioned to replace me, he'd asked me to swallow my pride. Now she'd nearly run someone over, then turned around and blamed me. Once again, I was the one being told to step aside.I placed a document folder on his desk."Fine. But before I stop teaching, release these."Mr. Cross opened the folder. His expression changed instantly. There was a petition asking to replace their instructor signed by twelve students, the volu

By the time the ambulance arrived, Sienna was still shaking. She wasn't seriously hurt. The airbag had only left her face red and scraped.Mason had a gash along his temple. The loudmouth who usually loved stirring everyone up could only groan in pain now.The night custodian sat off to one side, her hands trembling so badly she couldn't even hold a cup of water.Mr. Cross pulled up the security footage, and his expression grew darker with every second. In the footage, everything was revealed.Mason climbed through the office window to steal the keys. Sienna got behind the wheel. I tried to stop them, then Mason shoved me. The car took off and nearly hit the custodian.Every moment was crystal clear. When Mr. Vaughn arrived, he didn't ask whether his daughter had done anything wrong.Instead, he pointed at me and shouted, "Did you push her into driving?"Mr. Cross's expression changed. "Mr. Vaughn, you can't make accusations like that."As if she'd found a lifeline, Sienna th
