On the eve of the driving school's simulated road test, all twelve of my students signed a petition demanding I be fired. "Coach Sutton, we paid to get our licenses—not to hear you tell us every day we're going to kill someone." "All you ever do is slam the instructor brake or grab the steering wheel. Anyone who learns from you is doomed." The ringleader, Sienna Vaughn, threw a petition in my face before uploading a carefully edited video online. In the clip, I repeatedly stomped on the passenger-side brake and barked orders for students to pull over. Caption: "Gold Medal Coach... or Crazy Coach? Students are too terrified to touch the wheel." What she left out was everything that happened a split second before: the child who ran into the crosswalk just as I hit the brake, and the box truck drifting into our lane the instant I grabbed the wheel. Months earlier, when my previous class crashed on the freeway, I injured my knee pulling students out of the wreckage. The damage never fully healed. Ever since then, I'd become stricter behind the wheel. I braked when they ran a yellow light. I took the wheel if they didn't look in the mirror when changing lanes. Anyone who dared to touch their phone would have their training ended on the spot. But while I was at the hospital for a follow-up appointment, I overheard Sienna laughing in the stairwell. "Coach Sutton's just traumatized. Once we get her fired, let's see if she still sticks her nose into everyone's business." When I returned to the driving school, the owner, Victor Cross, told me to apologize and smooth things over. I looked at the twelve signatures on the petition and smiled. "Sure. Starting today, I won't touch the passenger brake for any of you."

No Safety Net Chapter 9
Six months later, at the driving school's annual safety conference, I received the Gold Instructor Award once again. As Mr. Cross handed me the trophy, he gave me an awkward smile."Harper, I was wrong. I used to worry that complaints looked bad and refunds would hurt business."But I finally realized the biggest threat to a driving school isn't a low pass rate. It's putting people on the road who never should've been there in the first place."Applause filled the room.I accepted the trophy without a polished speech.I simply said, "An instructor can teach someone how to drive. But whether they choose to respect the road is up to them."After the conference ended, I spotted Sienna in the parking lot. She'd lost a lot of weight, and her hair was cut short. She stood beside a rideshare car holding a bag of fruit. The moment she saw me, she froze."Coach Sutton."I stopped walking. She held out the fruit. "I'm not here to ask for your help. I just wanted to apologize."I did

Sienna wasn't ready to give up.Three days after the accountability meeting, she uploaded another long video. This time, she wasn't crying. She sat in front of the camera, pale and composed, her voice barely above a whisper."I admit I made mistakes. But Coach Sutton has taken away every path I had left. My family can't afford to pay that much money, and the driving school terminated my training."I just want a chance to start over. Why won't anyone give me one?"The sympathy started pouring back in.[The girl made a mistake, but does she really deserve to have her whole life ruined?][Isn't the instructor a little too ruthless?][What adult hasn't made mistakes?]When I saw the video, Mr. Cross was in his office, cursing under his breath. "How does she still have the nerve to play the victim?"I didn't answer.I simply sent him the last piece of evidence. It was a set of screenshots Melody had forwarded from the group's private chat. Before the accident that night, Sienna

On the day of the formal accountability meeting, the conference room was packed with parents.Three documents sat on the table: the accident report, a preliminary breakdown of the damages, and the insurance adjuster's findings.Mr. Cross slid the cost summary across the table."Vehicle repairs and write-off losses, property repairs, suspended training losses, medical examinations, and compensation for the custodian. The current estimate is $396,000."The room erupted."How can it cost that much? Is this driving school trying to rob us?""They're just kids! They only drove a couple of laps! How does that turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars?""What about the insurance?"The insurance adjuster opened his report."Coverage only applies to legal, authorized training sessions. Stealing the keys, driving after hours without authorization, and livestreaming the incident fall outside the policy."His words silenced the room.Mr. Vaughn's face darkened. "Your school also failed

The next morning, the entrance to the driving school was packed. Some people stood outside filming the training grounds with their phones.Others flooded the comments demanding the school fire me.Mr. Cross hadn't slept all night."Harper, take a few days off from teaching."I looked at him. "Are you suspending my classes, or suspending me?"He avoided my gaze. "Just a temporary suspension from instruction until the investigation is finished."I let out a quiet laugh. "So we're smoothing things over again."A few days ago, when Sienna and the others had petitioned to replace me, he'd asked me to swallow my pride. Now she'd nearly run someone over, then turned around and blamed me. Once again, I was the one being told to step aside.I placed a document folder on his desk."Fine. But before I stop teaching, release these."Mr. Cross opened the folder. His expression changed instantly. There was a petition asking to replace their instructor signed by twelve students, the volu
