Chapter 2

Author: Black Scale
Sienna's father, Albert Vaughn, arrived early the next morning. He slapped the enrollment receipt onto the desk hard enough for the entire office to hear.

"My daughter spent two months learning here, and your instructor scared her into this state. Doesn't your driving school owe us an explanation?"

Mr. Cross forced a smile as he poured him a cup of water. "Mr. Vaughn, Sienna's fundamentals are solid. It's just that when it comes to safety—"

"Don't give me that." Mr. Vaughn cut him off. "She came home crying all night. She said Coach Sutton keeps telling her she's going to kill someone and deliberately dragged her feet so she couldn't book her road test."

Sienna stood behind him, her eyes red and watery. "Dad... please, stop."

The more she tried to stop him, the angrier he became.

"Why shouldn't I say it? We paid to learn how to drive, not to be bullied!"

Mason and several other students crowded into the doorway.

Mason immediately chimed in, "Coach Sutton really did go too far. Every time she hit the instructor brake, we were practically thrown into the dashboard."

Another student added, "She said people like me shouldn't be behind the wheel."

I turned on my computer and pulled up the original in-car recordings.

The first clip showed Sienna driving through a school zone. The speed limit was 20 mph, but she was doing 26.

I warned her, "Slow down. Watch the right side."

She answered impatiently, "I know."

The next second, a little boy ran out from behind a parked van.

I hit the instructor brake. The car stopped just as the child's backpack brushed past the headlight.

The office fell silent.

The second clip showed Mason changing lanes without checking his mirrors while a box truck blasted its horn beside us. I grabbed the wheel and steered the car back into its lane.

The third clip showed a student looking down to reply to a text while the car drifted straight toward the guardrail.

I immediately ended the lesson and ordered him to pull over.

When the videos finished playing, Mr. Vaughn's expression shifted. However, he still refused to back down. "It's a training car. It has an instructor brake. What's the worst that could happen?"

I met his gaze. "Exactly. So now I don't use it anymore."

Sienna's head snapped up.

I slid the signed transfer confirmation across the desk.

"Your daughter has already requested a new instructor. From this point on, you'll need to discuss her training schedule and test arrangements directly with Coach Lawson."

Mr. Vaughn's eyes landed on Sienna's signature, and his face darkened. "You're just washing your hands of this."

"It's standard procedure."

Sienna bit her lip. "Coach Sutton, isn't this a little extreme? We just wanted you to stop being so harsh."

I nodded. "You wanted me to stop being so harsh. So I did. I'm done interfering."

Embarrassment flashed across her face.

By lunchtime, the students' group chat was buzzing like it was a holiday.

Sienna posted a selfie with Coach Lawson.

[Our new instructor says driving is all about confidence. You can't learn if someone's constantly scaring you.]

Mason quickly followed.

[Finally feels like a normal driving instructor.]

A few minutes later, Sienna uploaded another video. She'd edited together clips of me stomping on the instructor's brake with footage of Coach Lawson smiling as he coached them.

Caption: [One teaches you fear. The other helps you grow.]

After watching it, I quietly saved the video as evidence.

That evening, Melody called me. Her voice was barely above a whisper, as though she were hiding in a restroom.

"Coach Sutton, can I ask you something?"

"Go ahead."

"Coach Lawson says we're having our first on-road lesson tomorrow. But... I still mix up the gas and the brake. I'm scared."

Suddenly, Sienna's voice rang out from the other side of the door.

"Melody! Who are you secretly calling?"

Panic erupted on the other end of the line.

"I'm not tattling, I just..."

She stopped, as if there was something else she wanted to say.

The call disconnected.

Five minutes later, someone posted a video in the group chat.

Melody stood beside the training car, her face burning red as she clutched her phone with both hands.

Sienna laughed as she turned to everyone. "Listen to this. She still wants Coach Sutton to come save her."

The crowd burst into laughter.

Coach Lawson leaned against the training car without saying a word to stop them. He simply said, "It's okay to be nervous. We'll just spend more time on the road tomorrow."

I stared at that sentence.

My knee began throbbing again.

Right before the last serious accident, that student had said almost the exact same thing.

"Coach, I'm only driving a short distance. What could possibly happen?"

Six months later, at the driving school's annual safety conference, I received the Gold Instructor Award once again. As Mr. Cross handed me the trophy, he gave me an awkward smile."Harper, I was wrong. I used to worry that complaints looked bad and refunds would hurt business."But I finally realized the biggest threat to a driving school isn't a low pass rate. It's putting people on the road who never should've been there in the first place."Applause filled the room.I accepted the trophy without a polished speech.I simply said, "An instructor can teach someone how to drive. But whether they choose to respect the road is up to them."After the conference ended, I spotted Sienna in the parking lot. She'd lost a lot of weight, and her hair was cut short. She stood beside a rideshare car holding a bag of fruit. The moment she saw me, she froze."Coach Sutton."I stopped walking. She held out the fruit. "I'm not here to ask for your help. I just wanted to apologize."I did

Sienna wasn't ready to give up.Three days after the accountability meeting, she uploaded another long video. This time, she wasn't crying. She sat in front of the camera, pale and composed, her voice barely above a whisper."I admit I made mistakes. But Coach Sutton has taken away every path I had left. My family can't afford to pay that much money, and the driving school terminated my training."I just want a chance to start over. Why won't anyone give me one?"The sympathy started pouring back in.[The girl made a mistake, but does she really deserve to have her whole life ruined?][Isn't the instructor a little too ruthless?][What adult hasn't made mistakes?]When I saw the video, Mr. Cross was in his office, cursing under his breath. "How does she still have the nerve to play the victim?"I didn't answer.I simply sent him the last piece of evidence. It was a set of screenshots Melody had forwarded from the group's private chat. Before the accident that night, Sienna

On the day of the formal accountability meeting, the conference room was packed with parents.Three documents sat on the table: the accident report, a preliminary breakdown of the damages, and the insurance adjuster's findings.Mr. Cross slid the cost summary across the table."Vehicle repairs and write-off losses, property repairs, suspended training losses, medical examinations, and compensation for the custodian. The current estimate is $396,000."The room erupted."How can it cost that much? Is this driving school trying to rob us?""They're just kids! They only drove a couple of laps! How does that turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars?""What about the insurance?"The insurance adjuster opened his report."Coverage only applies to legal, authorized training sessions. Stealing the keys, driving after hours without authorization, and livestreaming the incident fall outside the policy."His words silenced the room.Mr. Vaughn's face darkened. "Your school also failed

The next morning, the entrance to the driving school was packed. Some people stood outside filming the training grounds with their phones.Others flooded the comments demanding the school fire me.Mr. Cross hadn't slept all night."Harper, take a few days off from teaching."I looked at him. "Are you suspending my classes, or suspending me?"He avoided my gaze. "Just a temporary suspension from instruction until the investigation is finished."I let out a quiet laugh. "So we're smoothing things over again."A few days ago, when Sienna and the others had petitioned to replace me, he'd asked me to swallow my pride. Now she'd nearly run someone over, then turned around and blamed me. Once again, I was the one being told to step aside.I placed a document folder on his desk."Fine. But before I stop teaching, release these."Mr. Cross opened the folder. His expression changed instantly. There was a petition asking to replace their instructor signed by twelve students, the volu

By the time the ambulance arrived, Sienna was still shaking. She wasn't seriously hurt. The airbag had only left her face red and scraped.Mason had a gash along his temple. The loudmouth who usually loved stirring everyone up could only groan in pain now.The night custodian sat off to one side, her hands trembling so badly she couldn't even hold a cup of water.Mr. Cross pulled up the security footage, and his expression grew darker with every second. In the footage, everything was revealed.Mason climbed through the office window to steal the keys. Sienna got behind the wheel. I tried to stop them, then Mason shoved me. The car took off and nearly hit the custodian.Every moment was crystal clear. When Mr. Vaughn arrived, he didn't ask whether his daughter had done anything wrong.Instead, he pointed at me and shouted, "Did you push her into driving?"Mr. Cross's expression changed. "Mr. Vaughn, you can't make accusations like that."As if she'd found a lifeline, Sienna th

  • No Safety Net   Chapter 4

By nine-thirty that night, the training grounds were already dark.I'd just reached the parking lot when I heard the metallic scrape of the back gate opening softly, like someone was trying not to get caught.I followed the wall around and saw the headlights of a spare training car flick on.Sienna was behind the wheel. Mason sat in the passenger seat, and several other students were crammed into the back.Melody stood outside the car, looking like she was about to cry. "Sienna, please. Don't do this."Sienna rolled down the window. "If you're scared, then get lost."Mason held up his phone with a grin. "The livestream's up. Time to show everyone what a genius driver looks like after getting held back by that psycho instructor."Melody clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She tried several times to tap the screen, but someone beside her kept knocking her hand away.I stepped out."Kill the engine. Get out."Everyone inside the car jumped.Sienna's face we
