Chapter 1

Ginetta Giordano placed the stack of invitations in front of Carlo Mandelli.

"I've finished writing the wedding invitations," she said.

"Thanks for your hard work." Carlo affectionately kissed her on the cheek.

I peered through the crack in the study door and watched them, feeling a deep ache in my chest.

There could only be one bride at the wedding, and it wouldn't be me.

I turned and went back to my bedroom. I tore up the guest list I had prepared and flushed the pieces down the toilet.

Just then, someone opened the bedroom door quietly.

Carlo walked toward me. "Alessia, get some rest at home today. I have something to take care of."

As he approached, I took a step back and avoided his outstretched hand.

Carlo froze. "I'm sorry I can't spend your birthday with you today. I'll make it up to you later."

I remembered how close he had been to Ginetta just moments ago, and tears nearly filled my eyes again.

"Okay." I fought back my tears. Unable to speak, I just nodded.

Carlo hurriedly wiped away my tears with his fingers. "Alessia, what's wrong? Does your stomach hurt?"

I looked him in the eye. "I'm fine. You should go."

A look of concern crossed Carlo's face, and he pulled me into his arms. "Alessia, no matter what happens, you're the only one I love."

"Carlo, I need to rest." I was exhausted and didn't want to hear any of it.

He studied me with a troubled look.

"Okay. I'll take care of some family business and come back to spend time with you later."

He planned to marry another woman and have a child with her behind my back, yet he still expected me to wait for him.

Just three months ago, we were happily planning our wedding. Now, I learned he was actually going to marry someone else!

After saying that, Carlo turned and left the villa with Ginetta.

I stood by the second-floor window and watched him and Ginetta get into the car, holding hands and laughing together.

He had even forgotten the goodbye kiss he always gave me before leaving.

I rested my hand on my belly as my feelings for him slowly faded.

I took out my phone and contacted Francesca Bellini, the professor who had been trying to recruit me.

"Professor Bellini, I've made up my mind. I'll join your lab and accept the research position that requires us to work in isolation."

Francesca replied almost at once. "Alessia, I'm so glad you've made your decision! But weren't you preparing for your wedding?"

"Professor Bellini, the wedding is off. See you in seven days," I replied calmly.

It wasn't until the police came to investigate that I learned Carlo had been the one who shoved me out of the way and saved my life.He had known I was holding a press conference that day, so he'd come to see me. That was when he'd seen Ginetta trying to run me over. He'd pushed me out of the way just in time. The doctors examined me at the hospital and found no physical injuries. But since I had witnessed the crash, I needed some counseling.A few days later, I learned from someone else that after saving me, Carlo had been struck by the car and killed on the spot.Ginetta had also been left paralyzed from the waist down after the car slammed into the wall.Later, I heard from an old friend that Carlo had paid a steep price to take control of the Mandelli family. The first thing he did after securing his position was announce that he would end his marriage to Ginetta.Everyone in the family opposed his decision, but no one could change his mind.In the end, the family insisted

After all this time in the lab, I had gotten better and better at running my experiments.Even Francesca said that at this rate, I could finish the project at least three months ahead of schedule.Just when I thought my life was finally settling down, I saw Carlo standing by the road as I left the building. He held a huge bouquet of red roses and ran straight toward me when he saw me."Alessia, it's been a long time. I'm not trying to force you to come back with me. I just want to win you back!"Carlo looked perfectly at ease, as if we had never argued or had any problems. It was as if this were just another ordinary day, and he'd come to take me home. But I only found him annoying now.I had wanted him to give me roses before, and I had told him so outright. However, he ignored my feelings and failed to understand me at all."What good are flowers? You'd be better off buying a gem at an auction. You always ask for pointless things like these."After that, I never asked him f

"Alessia, I know I was wrong! Papa said I could only marry you after I had an heir. I never would have agreed to this otherwise." Carlo tried to explain, looking frantic."The wedding is just a formality. You're the only woman I've ever considered my wife!"He seemed afraid I wouldn't believe him, so he kept trying to explain. "I kept it from you because I was afraid you'd get upset and hurt. I thought I'd be free once it was all over!"I used my free hand to pry his fingers off my wrist, one by one. "I get it. Carlo, we're over. Don't come looking for me again."Carlo looked frantic. He grabbed my hand and tried to drag me toward a car parked by the road.I never expected him to do something like that. Just as I was about to call for help, a familiar figure appeared."Carlo, today is the banquet where your family will announce my pregnancy. You have to be there!"Ginetta stepped out of another car. She gave me a sharp look before turning her gaze to Carlo. She wore a loose d

After I met Claire, she took me to the research institute where Francesca worked.I expected to be rusty after all these years, but the opposite was true. As soon as I picked up the lab equipment again, I knew this was where I belonged."I'm glad you've decided to come back to work." Francesca stood before me in her white lab coat, smiling warmly. "Alessia, welcome back!"Her gentle smile almost brought me to tears. For a moment, I could hardly believe I was really there. It felt like five years ago all over again. Francesca had urged me to stay in the lab, but I had chosen a very different path for Carlo.Thankfully, I still had the chance to come back.At Francesca's insistence, I took two days off to rest. Two days later, I put on my sterile lab suit and officially returned to the lab.The lab had living quarters, and this research project required us to work in a closed facility with no outside contact. We wouldn't be allowed out for at least two months.Once inside, I dev

As I stood in the Milars airport, I looked at the setting sun casting its light across the ground outside. For the first time, I felt like I had a fresh start. When I checked my phone, I saw dozens of missed calls. There were also countless new messages on my social media apps.I thought Francesca had called about the research project. When I checked, I found that all the calls and messages were from Carlo.[Alessia, where are you? Why aren't you answering my calls?][Ginetta and I are only together because of our families' deal. I've told you that you're the one I love most. Can you please stop this nonsense?][Just answer the phone! You still need to rest and recover!][If you come back now, I'll forgive you for leaving!]As I continued to ignore his messages and calls, he kept texting me, growing more desperate with each message.[Alessia, please come back. I'll marry you right now!][I know I shouldn't have lied to you. Please don't leave!][Alessia, I'll find you no matt

Pietro had me locked away in the holding room. It was pitch-black, and the air reeked of blood.I lay on the filthy bed, trying to ease the cramps in my belly. After some time, the door to the holding room suddenly swung open.Ginetta appeared in front of me. "Bring that bitch over here!"Two men grabbed my arms from either side and forced me onto my knees in front of Ginetta."I'm Carlo's wife, and I'm the only one who can have his child. The baby you're carrying is nothing but a bastard!" Ginetta snarled. Then she added, "Actually, I'm not pregnant at all. I just wanted to see if Carlo cared about me and the baby. And you've seen the result for yourself. Men, beat her up!"Ginetta stood a short distance away, directing the men beside her.The next moment, the men began kicking and punching my belly. The pain grew unbearable, and cold sweat broke out across my skin.I felt something leave my body, and the smell of fresh blood filled my nose."No! Please don't hurt my baby!"
