The courthouse halls smelled faintly of polish and paper.

Naya hated coming here every morning, signing her name, proving she wasn’t trying to run. It felt like punishment even though she hadn’t been convicted.

The ankle monitor already screamed prisoner, but this routine twisted the knife deeper. She often felt like a convicted criminal.

She clutched the clipboard, scrawled her signature, and turned toward the exit. The corridor stretched ahead, quiet except for the shuffle of a janitor’s cart. For once, she thought she’d make it out without seeing anyone who made her want to scream.

Then she heard it.

“Lucky girl.”

Her whole body froze.

Adrian leaned against the wall near the stairwell, suit perfect, phone in his hand like he’d been waiting. His smile was lazy, practiced.

“You got sprung out of the nut house,” he said. “Not everyone gets that chance.”

Naya’s nails dug into the clipboard. “Don’t talk to me.”

He stepped forward, voice dropping low enough the janitor couldn’t hear. “

  • Not His Wife Anymore   Chapter 62 – Dangerous Comfort

Naya's Pov“I don’t even know how you sleep at night.”The voice stopped Naya mid-step, halfway down the hall that led to the women’s bathroom. She froze, her hand tightening around the strap of her purse. She didn’t have to turn, she already knew it.Daniel.Slowly, she looked over her shoulder. He stood leaning against the wall like he owned the place, his suit sharp, tie loosened just enough to look casual. His dark hair was still perfect, his jaw tight. He looked the same as always, like it was a tiring activity. And somehow that hurt more than anything.“What do you want?” Naya asked, her voice flat.Daniel pushed off the wall, stepping closer. “Just to talk. You’ve been telling stories up there, painting me as some monster. Thought I should remind you of the truth.”She lifted her chin. “The truth is what I told them. You ignored me for a year. You left me alone in that house while you were God knows where. And your mother treated me like I was dirt.”He smirked. “You think any

  • Not His Wife Anymore   Chapter 61 – Chloe’s Mask Slips

Chloe' PovChloe had dressed carefully that morning, even more than usual. The ivory silk dress hugged her tall frame just enough to look elegant but not too revealing for court. Her blonde hair was pinned in soft waves over one shoulder, pearls at her ears, and her makeup precise, warm blush, a faint gloss to make her lips look fuller. She wanted sympathy. She wanted to look like the picture of grace.Daniel walked beside her into the courthouse. Broad shoulders filling his tailored navy suit, his dark hair trimmed neat, face freshly shaven. He looked sharp, controlled. The perfect businessman. But Chloe knew better. His jaw was tight, his hand flexing at his side as they entered the courtroom. He hated losing control of the narrative. And today, Adrian had slipped. The whispers had spread fast: forged papers, forged signatures, Adrian stammering for the first time in years. Chloe had seen Daniel’s knuckles go white around his pen as the evidence came up. He hadn’t said a word to he

  • Not His Wife Anymore   Chapter 60 – Almost

Naya's POVThe prep room smelled like paper and stale coffee. The walls were beige, the table scratched, and the buzzing fluorescent light made Naya’s skin itch. She sat across from Zipper, watching him shuffle through a stack of files like the pages weren’t heavy with her whole future. For once, she wasn’t trying to crack a joke or hide behind sarcasm. Her throat felt tight.“Hey,” she said quietly.Zipper didn’t look up. “Hm?”“Thank you.”His hand froze on the papers. Slowly, he lifted his head, eyes narrowing like she’d spoken in another language. “For what?”“You know what.” She leaned forward, fingers tightening on the edge of the table. “For being here. For fighting for me when everyone else…” She stopped, pressing her lips together. “Just—thank you.”Zipper smirked faintly, the usual shield. “Careful. You’re making me sound noble. People might start clapping.”“I’m serious.”“Yeah, I know.” He tossed the papers down, leaned back in his chair. “Don’t get used to it.”But he di

  • Not His Wife Anymore   Chapter 59 – Family Business

Chloe's PovChloe never thought her morning coffee would taste sweeter after plotting someone’s ruin. But it did. The bitterness of the beans mixed with the thrill in her chest, and she almost laughed when the cream swirled into a perfect spiral. The city outside her apartment window buzzed with its usual gray noise, the horns, distant sirens, people dragging themselves to work. But Chloe wasn’t one of them. She had bigger work to do.She set the cup down carefully, smoothing the silk robe over her thighs, and whispered to herself, “Almost over, Naya.”The knock at her door came soft, polite. She didn’t even flinch. Only one person knocked like that.“Come in,” she called.Adrian stepped inside, already in his pressed suit. Daniel was away and she had the house to herself.. He always looked like he’d walked straight out of a magazine spread. But to Chloe, he didn’t look like a lawyer or even a man of the court. He looked like what he was: her brother.“Early for you,” Chloe teased

The guest house creaked when the wind pushed at the shutters. Naya sat curled on the couch, one knee pulled up, watching the little clock on the wall tick too slowly. She was supposed to be resting, staying quiet until the next trial date, but her chest buzzed like a wire ready to snap. The door opened. Zipper stepped in, brushing snow off his shoulders. He didn’t come alone. Behind him walked a stocky man with a heavy coat, eyes sharp and restless.“Princess,” Zipper said, voice casual. “Meet the man who makes people like Adrian sweat in their thousand-dollar suits.”The stranger nodded at her. “Name’s Kurt.”Naya narrowed her eyes. “Another lawyer?”Kurt chuckled. “Not exactly. Private investigator. Zipper thought it was time you knew what we’ve been working on.”She sat up straighter. “Working on? Without telling me?”Zipper dropped onto the arm of the couch like it was his favorite seat. “Relax. I wanted proof before I showed you crumbs. Now we have something solid.”Her stomach
