Rhett

I'm still processing Harper’s bombshell when I hear the front door open and close. Through my office window, I can see Harper's dark sedan pulling away from our curb.

Wait. Harper is here? I thought we were just talking on the phone.

"Rhett!" Brynlee's voice carries from the front hallway, and there's an edge to it I haven't heard before. "Can you come here please?"

The "please" sounds more like a demand than a request, which is completely unlike her usual deference to my authority. I find her standing in the entryway with her arms crossed and an expression that looks dangerously close to anger.

"Why was Harper here?" she asks without preamble.

"She brought some research materials about dimensional exposure effects. I told her you were dealing with some adjustment issues."

"You told her I was having problems?" The question comes out sharp enough to make me take a step back.

"I told her you seemed to be having trouble readjusting, yes. She's an expert on dimensional—"

BrynleeThe highway stretches endlessly ahead of me, gray asphalt disappearing into gathering dusk like a metaphor for everything uncertain in my life. I've been driving for two hours, my hands gripping the steering wheel with mechanical precision while my mind cycles through the same devastating conversation on repeat.Maybe some space would be good.Rhett's quiet admission echoes in my head with the finality of a death sentence. He didn't fight when I suggested leaving. He didn't argue when I said I'd make it easy for him. He just... accepted it. Like my absence was a relief rather than a loss.Maybe it is. Maybe Harper was right that he'd be happier without the burden of trying to love someone who came back wrong. The road sign for Glass Lake appears in my headlights—thirty miles to go before I reach Olivia's house and have to explain why my relationship is falling apart two weeks after my miraculous rescue. The thought of admitting failure to my sister, of seeing pity in her eyes,

Rhett"I want my family back," I say automatically. It’s what I should want, right?"The family you had before Brynlee disappeared? Or a different version that accounts for who she is now?"The distinction forces me to confront something I've been avoiding. I have been trying to get back what we used to have—the confident, submissive mate who trusted me completely and responded to my dominance with eager surrender. But that woman might not exist anymore."I don't know if I can love who she is now," I admit. "She's so different, so closed off. It's like living with a stranger who looks like my mate.""That must be incredibly lonely."Lonely. It's exactly the right word for what I've been feeling. Lonely in my own house, lonely in my own bed, lonely in conversations with someone who used to know me better than I knew myself."It is," I say quietly.Harper reaches across the table and covers my hand with hers. The touch is warm, comforting, completely different from the careful distance

RhettThe house feels like a tomb after Brynlee leaves.Maya comes home from school to find me sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the note Brynlee left explaining that she's gone to stay with her sister for a while. "To give everyone space to figure out what they really want," the careful handwriting says. "I'll call about visitation schedules once things settle."Visitation schedules. Like we're humans who can just get divorced. We both know it’s not that simple. "Where's Mommy?" Maya asks, setting down her backpack and looking around the kitchen like Brynlee might be hiding somewhere."She went to visit Aunt Olivia," I tell her, because it's easier than explaining that our family is falling apart again just two weeks after I brought her mother home from the dead."When is she coming back?"I don't know if she is, I think but can't say. "We're still figuring that out, sweetheart."Maya's face crumples, and I realize she understands more than I've been giving her credit for. "I

Brynlee"It's not like that," Rhett says quietly, finally responding verbally to my accusation."Then what is it like? Explain to me what's so important about your conversations with Harper that you need to lie about where you're going to have them."Rhett glances around the café, clearly aware that we're drawing attention. Several patrons are openly staring now, and the barista looks like she's debating whether to call security."Can we please continue this at home?" he asks."No. I want to know right now what you two have been discussing behind my back.""We've been discussing treatment options for bond disruption," Harper says when Rhett doesn't answer immediately. "And yes, we've talked about the possibility that the damage might be permanent."Permanent. The word hits like a physical blow. So they have decided I'm broken beyond repair."And what conclusion did you reach?" I ask, my voice deadly quiet.Harper and Rhett exchange a look that tells me everything I need to know. They'

Brynlee The mate bond slams back to life at two o'clock in the afternoon like someone flipping a switch. One moment I'm folding laundry in blessed silence, resigned to another day of feeling disconnected from my own life. The next, I'm drowning in sensation as our bond roars back to overwhelming intensity.Rhett. His presence floods my consciousness so suddenly I have to grab the edge of the dresser to keep from falling over. I can feel his location, his emotional state, the complex mixture of guilt and confusion and something that feels dangerously close to resignation. But there's something wrong with what I'm sensing. He's not where he said he'd be.This morning, he mentioned running errands after dropping Maya at school. Simple, mundane tasks that shouldn't generate this kind of emotional complexity. But the location I'm picking up through our bond isn't the hardware store or the bank. He's at Café Luna. And he's not alone. The realization sends my wolf into immediate territorial

Rhett"Can I ask you something?" Harper says eventually breaking the silence we’d fallen into."Sure.""What do you want from this relationship? Not what you think you should want, not what you used to want. What do you actually want right now?"The question forces me to examine feelings I've been avoiding. What do I want from Brynlee? The easy answer is "everything we used to have"—the intimacy, the connection, the sense of being two halves of a complete whole. But what if that's not possible anymore?"I want her to be happy," I say finally. "I want her to feel safe and loved and like she belongs somewhere.""With you?""If that's what would make her happy, yes. But if being with me makes her feel trapped or obligated or like she's failing at something she used to be good at..." I trail off, unable to finish the thought."Then maybe the most loving thing you could do is let her go," Harper says gently. The words are a shock to my system. "You think I should leave her?""I think you s
