Chapter 4 I Want a Divorce

I no longer believed a single word Anastasia said. I should have realized we would not make it to the end long ago.

I dialled the divorce lawyer's number and cut to the chase. "Hi. My wife is having an affair during our marriage. Please draft a divorce paper for me."

After the consultation ended, I immersed myself in work. I only returned home in the evening.

As expected, Anastasia was still not there.

At that moment, I received a message. George had sent me a photo. It was Anastasia in a wedding gown with a pearl necklace around her neck.

She was linking arms with him as she smiled sweetly into the camera.

His message read, 'Wyatt, Annie really enjoyed today. She loves the dress I chose for her. She even said it felt like the two of us were taking a wedding photo.'

Then, there was a bank transaction to my bank account.

He continued to brag, 'After the two of you have been together for seven years, she still chose me over you when I showed up in front of her. Man to man, I'll be direct. The money is a payment for the time you spent by her side over the past seven years. Leave her, or else I'll make sure the two of you don't last long.'

I caressed the photo on my phone screen without replying to his message.

That night, I had trouble falling asleep.

At midnight, a sound came from the entryway. Anastasia had come home, and she tiptoed into the master bedroom.

The lights were off, so she could not tell whether I was awake.

I felt the mattress slightly sink.

In the darkness, she wrapped her arms around my waist and rested her head against my back with tenderness.

I continued to face away from her with my eyes open. I never spoke up to let her know I was awake.

Finally, her ringing phone broke the silence.

She quickly covered the speaker and snuck out of bed to answer the call.

She answered it on the balcony nearby. I could easily hear her despite her hushed voice.

"Aren't you and Wyatt going to have a wedding? Why is it delayed again?" the caller asked.

She replied in a low voice, "George's return has thrown me off. I have been trying over the past year. I tried to move on and focus on living a happy life with Wyatt. But at night, thoughts of George flood my mind. Every little thing about Wyatt reminds me of him. The black tie he wears…The meals he cooks… I can't help myself."

Her confession made me nauseous.

"I have invested much time and effort to maintain our relationship after all the years of dating Wyatt. I'm not going to divorce him. All I need is a little more time."

I did not listen to the rest of her conversation.

I read George's last message and replied. 'You can keep what I don't want anymore.'

I had long planned to divorce Anastasia anyway, and I considered the money compensation for my loss.

The next morning, Anastasia left the house after making me breakfast.

After she was gone, I packed my luggage. Everything connected to her, I left behind in that house.

When I shut the door, I did not look back.
