Adeline’s POV

I woke with my cheek pressed into something cold and wet.

For a few seconds, I just lay there, barely awake, listening to the faint sound of water moving somewhere beside me. I slowly opened my eyes and found myself staring at a tangle of reeds. Murky water pooled between them and sunlight was already slipping through the trees above.

Where was I?

I pushed myself up and a sharp pain tore through my right hand. I caught it against my chest and the memory came back in pieces.

Adeline’s POV I woke with my cheek pressed into something cold and wet. The window. The drop. The sickening crack when I landed. I remembered lying there for a second, unable to breathe, before forcing myself up and running. After that, I just kept going until the trees blurred around me and my legs finally gave out. I must have collapsed here. I looked around the swamp again, hardly believing I was still free. I had actually gotten away from that monster. The thought brought such a rush of relief that I nearly laughed. Then I remembered the healer, and the b

"What?" Calix's voice cracked behind me. "Why the hell do you need another healer? I brought you Rufus a few days ago. You said he was good. What happened? Did he quit too? Did he even get a chance to examine her before you decided he wasn't good enough?" Iver stirred impatiently inside me, urging me to silence Calix. He was getting just as tired of the endless questions as I was. Calix moved into my peripheral vision, folding his arms across his bare chest. "Killian, what happened to him?" I turned slowly to look at him. "He’s dead." He stared at me for a long moment before dragging both hands down his face. He closed his eyes and tipped his head back, breathing out slowly through his nose as if he was trying very hard not to say something that would get him killed. "Killian," he said carefully, looking at me again, "tell me you didn’t kill him. Please." "Me?" I scoffed. "No. Of course not. I didn’t kill him. Why would I do that?" "Okay... then how did he die? He was p

Killian's POV The moaning behind the door was beginning to irritate me. Not because I gave a damn what my Beta did in his spare time. He could fuck himself raw for all I cared. His sex life was his business, and I had no interest in any of it. What irritated me was that I'd sent for him ten minutes ago, and he was still in there fucking around instead of standing in front of me.. I exhaled slowly through my nose, then shoved the door open. The scene that greeted me was exactly as disgraceful as I'd expected. Calix was on his knees behind one blonde, while the other knelt behind him with her arms wrapped around his chest, kissing his neck. I stopped dead. For a moment, I simply stared at him. This was my Beta. The man I trusted with my orders, my soldiers, and the decisions that kept my kingdom running when I couldn't be everywhere at once. He was the one I sent when a pack needed putting in its place, when a problem needed handling quietly, when I needed someone to speak fo

I didn't know how long I had been asleep. I had no idea what was happening around me, either. Sometimes I thought I heard voices nearby, but they always seemed too far away for me to make out what they were saying. Other times, I could have sworn I felt gentle hands tending to me, pulling the blankets higher around my body or pressing a cool cloth against my forehead. The touch was always brief, and by the time I tried to focus on it, it was gone, leaving me wondering if I'd imagined it. For what felt like forever, I drifted in that strange, peaceful emptiness. It was warm and quiet, and for once, nothing hurt. I didn't want to leave. I could have stayed there forever, away from everything and everyone. But something pulled me back. I tried to open my eyes, but they wouldn't move. No matter how hard I tried, my eyelids stayed stubbornly shut. A small knot of fear tightened in my stomach. Where was I? Footsteps moved slowly across the floor. They stopped for a few seconds, then

"If you please me, I might even keep you and make you part of my harem. You’d have a warm bed, food from my table, and a roof over your head. That’s better than rotting out here in the dirt with your throat cut, wouldn’t you say?" His words sank in, and something inside me snapped. Before I could think better of it, I spat straight into his face. He went completely still as my spit ran down his cheek. He wiped it away with the back of his hand, then slowly looked at me again. The amusement was gone. His eyes were cold. "You filthy little—" His hand came across my face before he could finish. My head jerked to the side, and for a second, all I could hear was the ringing in my ears. My cheek burned, and when I swallowed, I tasted blood. "Do that again," he growled, "and I’ll snap your fucking neck right here." "Go on, then." My voice came out hoarse, but I forced the words through the pain. "Kill me." He reached down and started undoing his belt. "Oh, I’m going to kill you," he

I watched them turn and run. For a few seconds, I could still see their shapes moving between the trees. Every step they took put more distance between us, and with it, any hope that I'd see them again. A part of me wanted to call out—to beg them not to leave me—but I swallowed the words. If they came back, we'd all get caught. Sam stayed at the back, constantly glancing over her shoulder as if she was trying to memorize where I was. Every time she looked back, it hurt a little more. I didn’t want her to go, but I knew she wasn’t leaving because she wanted to. She was leaving because she had no choice. She looked back one last time, and our eyes met in the dark. I forced a smile, even though it felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest. I needed her to believe I was okay. I needed her to keep running instead of turning back for me. It was the last gift I could give her. A lie. The lie that I’d find a way out of this. That someday, we’d laugh about tonight. That this was

For a second, no one moved. Then the crowd surged forward all at once. Bodies slammed into each other, tripping over anything in the way.I grabbed Sam’s hand with my right and Teagan’s with my left and pulled them along as tight as I could. My bad leg was already throbbing like someone was stabbin

Why was this happening to me?Hadn't I suffered enough?Wasn’t it enough to grow up unwanted, to learn early that no one was ever coming to save me? Mirabel sighed in frustration. "I’m not helping you because I like you." She said flatly. "I’m helping because four bodies moving together make more noise and more scent than one, but four also means four pairs of eyes and ears."Her gaze flicked into the dark trees, then back to us."And right no
