Chapter 4

Author: Flying Potatoes
At last, when my parents saw me lying there with smoke rising from my body and my entire face burned beyond recognition, they let out strangled sobs.

Mom covered her mouth. Huge droplets of tears rolled down her face. "Cal… why aren't you fighting back at all?"

She staggered to the bedside, trembling as she stared at the charred wound on my throat.

"Did… did you suffer so much in prison that it scared the courage out of you? Tell me what happened. I'll stand up for you…"

She was going to stand up for me, huh? Why didn't she offer to do that when they sent me to prison three years ago?

Regina came over as well. As she looked at my face—now corroded beyond recognition by the sulfuric acid—a pained look came into her eyes, one that I hadn't seen in forever.

"I'm sorry, Cal…" Her voice choked with emotion. "Why did you behave so foolishly? From now on, I'll protect you. I won't let anyone hurt you again…"

I slowly turned my eyes toward her.

Then, I weakly shook my head and started to speak. My voice slurred and barely coherent.

"You… won't. Y-You guys… were the ones who sent me to prison… Why would you… protect me?"

For Regina and my parents, those words felt like a slap to the face.

Calista was standing to the side, her face pale, but she stubbornly declared, "Mom, Dad, Regina, don't let him fool you! He's just having a pity party! He deliberately let those people do this to him so that you'll feel guilty and take pity on him!"

Regina whipped around, her eyes red as she shouted, "Shut up, Calista! Can't you see the state he's in? They poured sulfuric acid down his throat! They used an electroshock baton on him! He almost died!"

"He should've just died then!" Calista screamed right back as she wagged her finger at me. "Look at him! He's completely insane! He'll only cause trouble for the family if we keep him around. I don't think he has learned a thing—he's just acting!"

But the moment her gaze met Tyler's frightened expression, her eyes softened immediately.

"Don't be scared, Ty. As your sister, I will never let you suffer any injustice."

Tyler looked at me and abruptly spoke up in a timid voice. "Mom, Dad, Callie… I think… there's really something wrong with Cal."

After a pause, he added with a terrified expression, "Do you think… he has some kind of mental disorder? What if his show of obedience now is just an act? Once we let our guard down, he might suddenly…"

"A mental disorder?" Calista's eyes lit up, seemingly having thought of something. "That's right. I bet he's mentally ill right now. He probably has some kind of personality disorder!

"People like him, who are good at pretending, are the most dangerous. If he can be this ruthless to himself, who knows how he'll hurt Ty once he gets the chance!"

Calista's words made everyone hesitate.

"Cal, your behavior does seem rather abnormal. It's best if we let a doctor check on you," Dad said.

A short while later, two psychiatrists hurried into the room.

Calista was the first to step forward, pointing at me as she declared, "Doctors, he's an extremely dangerous patient with some kind of mental disorder. He also has a violent streak and self-harm tendencies!"

Meanwhile, standing from afar, Tyler shot the two psychiatrists a look, his eyes blazing venomously.

An hour later, the results came out. I was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia.

The doctor handed the report to my parents and suggested that I be isolated for everyone's safety.

After looking at the report, Calista screamed sharply, "Quick! Have him taken away right this minute! Put him in a psychiatric hospital—or better yet, send him back to prison! I'll apply for mandatory confinement!"

She stared at me coldly, as if I weren't her younger brother but her mortal enemy. "A troublemaker like you will only bring disaster to the family. You should just die!"

The word "die" was all my mind grabbed onto. Instinctively, I obeyed the command.

I'd noticed earlier that one of the windows didn't have any safety bars. While Regina and Calista were busy arguing, I climbed onto the windowsill and jumped.

My body fell through the air. The wind roared in my ears.

The ground kept getting closer with every passing second. Above, I saw their horrified faces pressed against the windows.

With a deafening crash, I hit the ground like a watermelon smashed against concrete.

My skull split open. Blood gushed out, forming a pool all around me.

"Which one of you is Tyler Lowe?" one officer asked. "You're under suspicion for hiring people to commit assault. You need to come with us for further investigation."The color drained from Tyler's face. He ducked behind Mom before shouting, "I didn't do anything! I'm innocent! What gives you the right to arrest me? I'm the victim!""Innocent?" Regina sneered. "All of the evidence here proves everything you've done to Calvin. We'll let the court decide whether you're truly innocent."She fell silent for a moment before adding, "It's not just you. I helped you fabricate false charges, too. I can't escape legal punishment either."With that, she walked up to the police officers, her tone sincere as she said, "Officer, I want to turn myself in."Tyler's body trembled as the realization hit him. "You called the police? You bitch!""Shut up!" Regina raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face. The police officers stepped forward and snapped cold handcuffs around his wrists.

My parents' faces grew paler and paler, their bodies shaking harder with each second. Tears streamed down uncontrollably once again. They wanted to argue, to defend themselves, but they realized there was nothing they could say. Every single thing that had been exposed was true.Regina suddenly lifted her head, tears blurring her vision. She stared at my parents with desperate fury, each word escaping her mouth a bitter accusation."Since you already had Calvin, why did you still adopt Tyler? Why did you even give birth to him if you weren't going to love him? Why!"That final "why" seemed to drain every last ounce of strength from Regina. She collapsed to her knees, covering her face as she broke down sobbing."He had always been so thoughtful and kind… All he wanted was a bit of your love… Even just a little would've been enough… but what did you do, huh? What did you guys take him for?"Half-crazed, she hurled the stack of medical reports from the box across the floor."These

The entire living room fell silent, and a figure dressed in black slowly approached the Lowes. It was Regina, and she'd brought a large cardboard box with her. After roughly wiping her tears away, she hoarsely declared, "Tyler deceived all of us! He was never as innocent and harmless as we thought. Even Calvin's death was orchestrated by him from the very beginning!" "Regina…" Calista said shakily. "Y-You can't just accuse him like that… You can't blame everything on Ty just because Calvin is dead…"But Regina ignored her completely. She walked straight to the front and placed the cardboard box in front of my funeral portrait. Then, she took out a voice recorder and pressed the play button.Tyler's voice immediately rang across the living room."Calvin, there can only be one son in the Lowe family, and that's me! So what if they're your biological parents? I'll definitely find a way to drive you out of this family!"Everyone's expressions changed drastically as they all turned t

"I'm sorry. We did everything we could."Those words from the doctor completely shattered their last bit of hope.Regina let out a shrill scream and fainted on the spot. Mom collapsed right after her.Dad stared at my body beneath the white sheet. Every trace of color drained from his face as his body shook violently. Standing on the side, Calista remained in complete disbelief, still muttering, "How could he be dead… How could he die…"Just then, the system's voice rang out inside my head."Host's death detected. The Absolute Obedience Mission has been successfully completed. Ten billion dollars is now being transferred to the host's account…"I looked around at the familiar surroundings before asking, "Why am I still here in this world?"The system explained that there was a time difference between this world and my original world, so my soul would need to remain here for three more days. Each passing second felt like an eternity.I watched as Regina woke up and started cl

Everything was finally over.I slowly lowered my head and saw myself lying on the ground. My skull had completely shattered. One eyeball had fallen out. My limbs twisted at unnatural angles, surrounded by a massive pool of blood. It was such a miserable sight. I couldn't believe I'd allowed myself to end up like that.Floating in midair, I watched the whole scene unfold in silence, as if I were just a passing onlooker. Things had already descended into complete chaos.Mom had collapsed to the ground from crying uncontrollably. As she clutched Dad's arm tightly, she choked out in a broken voice, "Cal… my son… Wake up…"She grabbed at Calista and Tyler, pounding them with her fists. "You're the ones who killed my son! Give him back to me…"Dad buried his face in his hands, his shoulders trembling. I couldn't see his face, b
