Chapter 6

作者: Reneemoon
The sun felt harsher in Spain than it had in Chicago.

When I landed, someone was already waiting to pick me up.

Everything went more smoothly than I'd expected. My friend had quietly arranged my new identity, visa, work permit, and hiring paperwork months earlier, so everything was already in place when I arrived.

The director, a gray-haired woman named Carmen Ruiz, took my hand and spoke in accented English.

"We've waited a long time for a real ballerina to teach these children."

I nodded and didn't mention that I hadn't been on a stage in a very long time.

The medical exam was the last step.

When the doctor lifted the back of my shirt, the exam room went quiet for a long time.

He frowned and said something in Spanish. The nurse beside him translated.

"These scars... what happened?"

I stared at the anatomy chart on the opposite wall.

The fire.

The fire that burned all night.

And everything I'd taken for Vincenzo since. Broken glass, falling beams, knives thrown by his enemies.

"Don't worry, it's fine," I said. "I won't be performing. Teaching the kids is enough for me.

"These scars... think of them as proof that I've lived."

The doctor started to say something, then stopped.

I pulled my shirt back down and turned around.

Carmen had been waiting outside. When she heard what I'd said, she fell quiet for a moment, then sighed and pulled me into a hug.

"Thank you for never giving up. Welcome to our academy," she said. "Welcome."

She'd barely finished speaking when a bunch of kids swarmed around us, chattering away.

There were seven or eight of them. The youngest was only five. She stood on tiptoe and hugged me around the waist.

Her hair was twisted into a lopsided bun with a pink hair tie.

It looked just like the one my mom had done for me before my first performance.

I looked down at her, and slowly, I smiled.

The empty place in my chest seemed to fill, little by little.

That was when I realized something.

Letting go wasn't as hard as I'd thought.

...

A few hours earlier, in Chicago.

A black car sped through the streets before dawn.

The city was still asleep, but every route out of Chicago, including the highways, marinas, and airports, had been blocked.

Traffic backed up at the checkpoints. People rolled down their windows to curse, leaned on their horns, and complained to anyone who'd listen.

Marco spoke quietly from the passenger seat.

"Don, still nothing. None of the checkpoints have found Donna Moretti."

Vincenzo stared at the empty highway ahead, his fists clenched on his knees, his knuckles white.

"Keep looking."

"But every checkpoint has already..."

"I said keep looking."

Marco said nothing more.

Vincenzo closed his eyes. All he could see was the report from that black box, every word stark on the page.

"Pregnancy: 12 weeks. Procedure: dilation and curettage."

Vivian had been carrying his child.

Then she'd gone through the procedure alone, and their baby was gone.

Now Vivian was gone too.

Vincenzo's eyes snapped open. In the car window, he caught his own reflection, eyes bloodshot.

"There's no record of her anywhere?"

His voice had gone hoarse.

"It looks like Donna Moretti used a different identity. There's no record of her leaving the country. It's like... she planned it all."

She had it all planned.

Vincenzo sank back into his seat. It felt as though a fist had closed around his chest.

How had she hidden it from him so well?

How had he missed it? He hadn't even known she was planning to leave.

Then a scent reached him.

Crisp and wild, with a sweetness that stung his nose.

Daisies.

His suit was hopelessly wrinkled, his hair a mess, his eyes sunken. He looked hollowed out.I looked at him, and I felt strangely calm.I tucked the blanket around Lorenzo. He gave me an encouraging look, and I left the room.I stopped in front of Vincenzo."Did you see that?" I said. "When disaster struck, he shielded me. You didn't."Vincenzo swallowed hard."So what do you feel for me? Is it love, obsession, or the need to own me?" I looked into his eyes. "Someone who would never leave you finally did, and now you can't stand it."His lips parted, but nothing came out."Leave us alone."Vincenzo stood there for a long, long time. He'd only meant to scare them.Jealousy had coiled around his gut like a snake. She'd moved into that man's house, called him her fiancé, and laughed so easily right in front of him.He couldn't stand it.He'd only wanted to frighten her, to make her understand that she couldn't just leave him.At most, he'd meant to scorch the living room and scare the kid

In the firelight, his bloodshot eyes looked raw. Then he turned his head. When he saw me, he went rigid, his lips trembling. The next second, he rushed toward me."Thank God you're okay..."The words were barely out of his mouth when I slapped him across the face.Smack! The crack split the night, louder than the timber snapping inside the burning house. His head jerked to the side. A thread of blood appeared on his lip, and my hand left a pale streak in the soot on his cheek. He turned back toward me. Half his face was swelling before my eyes.He just looked at me. He didn't flinch away."If anything happens to Lorenzo," I said, meeting his eyes, my voice cold, "I will kill you."When the firefighters carried Lorenzo out, most of his shirt had burned away. His back and arms were an angry red.The skin had peeled back and was still oozing blood. His eyes were closed, his lips pale. When they lifted him into the ambulance, I climbed in after him and held his hand. His fingertips were st

I was stunned.Carmen exchanged a look with a few of the kids, smiled, and quietly led them away. The door eased shut.It was just the two of us in the hallway."Vivian," he said softly. "I noticed you as soon as you arrived."Now I think I know why you always seemed so withdrawn."I blinked."That man acts devoted, but he doesn't really know you. He doesn't respect what you want, either, does he?"You lived like that for so long. That's why, when I asked you what you liked, you just froze."He paused, his eyes on my face."But when you smile, you're beautiful. It makes me think you must have really shone once, before something dimmed your light."Whether I'm asking you to marry me or just trying to be your friend," he said with a self-deprecating laugh, looking down, "maybe I'm just being selfish. It's okay if you say no. But please let me stay and keep looking out for you."I was quiet for a long time. Then I smiled."Okay."Over the next few days, Vincenzo followed me to and from wo

Vincenzo froze. His eyes slowly reddened, as though something deep inside him were tearing open. He'd probably expected me to push him away, maybe even say worse things. But he'd never imagined I'd take back my love.I had simply realized something: the man I'd fallen for, the man I'd loved in the beginning, might have been real. What had really trapped me, left me too numb even to cry, wasn't him. It was my own obsession.I'd tied every hope I had to one person, and I'd kept them tied there for seven years.I'd held on so tightly that I forgot what I liked. I lost the strength to cry. I began to think living meant enduring. But everyone loves freedom. If he could have it, so could I.Vincenzo, though, clearly didn't want to understand any of that.He spun around and pointed toward the classroom at the other end of the hall, his voice a low snarl."Is this because of him?"I was taken aback."What are you talking about?""Because of him!" he shouted, his eyes bloodshot. "You two looked

Lorenzo's brows drew together, his eyes darting between Vincenzo and me. He looked like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he nodded.I followed Vincenzo out the door. The hallway was quiet except for the kids' laughter in the distance. He stood at the end of the hall, staring at me hungrily, as though he were trying to burn every inch of me into his memory."Do you know how long I've been looking for you?" His voice was raw. "I've spent the past few days searching ballet schools all over Europe. I knew you'd go back to dance."I leaned against the wall, arms crossed, and looked at him."So? What's your point? That you know me so well?"He faltered."Vivian... I know about the baby." He stepped closer and lowered his voice. "But we can have another one. I'll make it up to you."We've had seven years together. I just lost my head for a little while."He paused and swallowed hard."And don't worry. That woman isn't carrying my child anymore."He sounded as though he were reading

He'd lost a lot of weight. His jaw was sharper than before, and dark circles ringed his eyes, as though he hadn't slept properly in days. His suit was wrinkled, and his tie hung loose around his neck.He was glaring at us.Lorenzo's hand was still raised, his fingers almost brushing my lips."Who is he?"Vincenzo's voice was rough as sandpaper. The warmth slowly drained from my face.I'd known this day would come.He was the head of the Moretti family, after all, and his reach was almost limitless. Finding me in Spain was only a matter of time.I just hadn't expected it to be now.He strode over and grabbed my wrist. His grip was so tight that his fingers dug into my skin.I didn't fight him.Not because I didn't have the strength. I just didn't want to make a scene here. The kids were still gathered around us, wide-eyed and confused.I looked up at him, my voice tired."Let's talk outside."I'd barely turned when Lorenzo stepped in front of me.He frowned, his gaze dropping to Vincenz
