Chapter 5

作者: Reneemoon
The pain was so bad I could barely breathe.

Then the phone by my pillow buzzed. An unknown number had sent me a video.

In a dim room, a man bent his head and tenderly kissed the woman in his arms.

My breath caught.

It was my bedroom. The woman was Julia, dressed in a skimpy bunny costume.

"I wore your favorite. Do you like it?"

The man's breathing grew heavy. Without hesitation, he tore the outfit off her.

A second later, a photo popped up, sharp and clear.

It was a pregnancy test result.

Then the texts started coming. "Donna Moretti, the baby is Vincenzo's."

"For the three days you were unconscious, he snuck me into your bedroom every single night. He was so wild we went through boxes of condoms."

"His car, his office, even beside the altar where you said your vows. We've left our mark everywhere."

"The woman he doesn't love is the real other woman. I think we both know which of us should leave."

Julia had dropped the act. She threw every filthy detail of her affair with Vincenzo in my face.

I clenched my fists. The blood beneath me soaked the sheets red and dripped steadily onto the floor.

The nurses cried out and rushed me into the OR.

The anesthesia crept slowly through my body, and everything went hazy.

When I came to, I pulled my gown tighter around me. My belly felt empty.

It was as if the baby who had been there had never existed.

The doctor hesitated, then handed me the test report.

According to the report, the main cause of the miscarriage was a toxic chemical absorbed through my skin.

The bottle of daisy-scented massage oil flashed into my mind.

I sat there for a long time, holding the report.

At sunset, I folded it up, put it away, and checked myself out of the hospital.

Back at the house, I put the miscarriage report and the divorce papers I'd prepared into a black gift box.

Then I picked up a pen and wrote a single line on a sticky note.

"My last gift to you."

I packed my bags, picked up my parents' urn, and walked out of that house, one step at a time.

...

Meanwhile, Vincenzo had finished calming Julia down and left the room next door.

On his way back, Marco Bellini, one of his men, caught up and spoke in a low voice.

"Don, should we keep having the oil flown in as usual?"

Vincenzo paused. Only then did he realize how long it had been.

He hadn't massaged Vivian's scars in two whole weeks.

He pictured her pregnant, and a faint tenderness came into his eyes.

"Same as before. White-rose oil."

He pushed open the door to her hospital room.

The room was empty.

Vincenzo stopped short. Frowning, he turned to a nurse.

"Where's my wife?"

"She didn't tell you? She checked herself out earlier today."

Checked out?

Without even telling him?

Vincenzo frowned, and a strange irritation rose in him.

Pushing the feeling down, he drove straight back to the house.

But the moment he opened the front door, the whole place felt cold and empty.

A suffocating dread gripped his heart.

He searched the house floor by floor, room by room.

But even the urn in the study was gone.

Vincenzo swore under his breath, pulled out his phone, and called Vivian's number again and again. All he got was the same cold recorded voice.

"The number you have dialed is no longer in service."

He paced the living room until he spotted the black gift box in the middle of the coffee table.

The sticky note on the lid was in her handwriting.

His hands weren't steady as he opened the box.

On top lay a report, printed in black and white.

"Pregnancy: 12 weeks. Procedure: dilation and curettage."

His suit was hopelessly wrinkled, his hair a mess, his eyes sunken. He looked hollowed out.I looked at him, and I felt strangely calm.I tucked the blanket around Lorenzo. He gave me an encouraging look, and I left the room.I stopped in front of Vincenzo."Did you see that?" I said. "When disaster struck, he shielded me. You didn't."Vincenzo swallowed hard."So what do you feel for me? Is it love, obsession, or the need to own me?" I looked into his eyes. "Someone who would never leave you finally did, and now you can't stand it."His lips parted, but nothing came out."Leave us alone."Vincenzo stood there for a long, long time. He'd only meant to scare them.Jealousy had coiled around his gut like a snake. She'd moved into that man's house, called him her fiancé, and laughed so easily right in front of him.He couldn't stand it.He'd only wanted to frighten her, to make her understand that she couldn't just leave him.At most, he'd meant to scorch the living room and scare the kid

In the firelight, his bloodshot eyes looked raw. Then he turned his head. When he saw me, he went rigid, his lips trembling. The next second, he rushed toward me."Thank God you're okay..."The words were barely out of his mouth when I slapped him across the face.Smack! The crack split the night, louder than the timber snapping inside the burning house. His head jerked to the side. A thread of blood appeared on his lip, and my hand left a pale streak in the soot on his cheek. He turned back toward me. Half his face was swelling before my eyes.He just looked at me. He didn't flinch away."If anything happens to Lorenzo," I said, meeting his eyes, my voice cold, "I will kill you."When the firefighters carried Lorenzo out, most of his shirt had burned away. His back and arms were an angry red.The skin had peeled back and was still oozing blood. His eyes were closed, his lips pale. When they lifted him into the ambulance, I climbed in after him and held his hand. His fingertips were st

I was stunned.Carmen exchanged a look with a few of the kids, smiled, and quietly led them away. The door eased shut.It was just the two of us in the hallway."Vivian," he said softly. "I noticed you as soon as you arrived."Now I think I know why you always seemed so withdrawn."I blinked."That man acts devoted, but he doesn't really know you. He doesn't respect what you want, either, does he?"You lived like that for so long. That's why, when I asked you what you liked, you just froze."He paused, his eyes on my face."But when you smile, you're beautiful. It makes me think you must have really shone once, before something dimmed your light."Whether I'm asking you to marry me or just trying to be your friend," he said with a self-deprecating laugh, looking down, "maybe I'm just being selfish. It's okay if you say no. But please let me stay and keep looking out for you."I was quiet for a long time. Then I smiled."Okay."Over the next few days, Vincenzo followed me to and from wo

Vincenzo froze. His eyes slowly reddened, as though something deep inside him were tearing open. He'd probably expected me to push him away, maybe even say worse things. But he'd never imagined I'd take back my love.I had simply realized something: the man I'd fallen for, the man I'd loved in the beginning, might have been real. What had really trapped me, left me too numb even to cry, wasn't him. It was my own obsession.I'd tied every hope I had to one person, and I'd kept them tied there for seven years.I'd held on so tightly that I forgot what I liked. I lost the strength to cry. I began to think living meant enduring. But everyone loves freedom. If he could have it, so could I.Vincenzo, though, clearly didn't want to understand any of that.He spun around and pointed toward the classroom at the other end of the hall, his voice a low snarl."Is this because of him?"I was taken aback."What are you talking about?""Because of him!" he shouted, his eyes bloodshot. "You two looked

Lorenzo's brows drew together, his eyes darting between Vincenzo and me. He looked like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he nodded.I followed Vincenzo out the door. The hallway was quiet except for the kids' laughter in the distance. He stood at the end of the hall, staring at me hungrily, as though he were trying to burn every inch of me into his memory."Do you know how long I've been looking for you?" His voice was raw. "I've spent the past few days searching ballet schools all over Europe. I knew you'd go back to dance."I leaned against the wall, arms crossed, and looked at him."So? What's your point? That you know me so well?"He faltered."Vivian... I know about the baby." He stepped closer and lowered his voice. "But we can have another one. I'll make it up to you."We've had seven years together. I just lost my head for a little while."He paused and swallowed hard."And don't worry. That woman isn't carrying my child anymore."He sounded as though he were reading

He'd lost a lot of weight. His jaw was sharper than before, and dark circles ringed his eyes, as though he hadn't slept properly in days. His suit was wrinkled, and his tie hung loose around his neck.He was glaring at us.Lorenzo's hand was still raised, his fingers almost brushing my lips."Who is he?"Vincenzo's voice was rough as sandpaper. The warmth slowly drained from my face.I'd known this day would come.He was the head of the Moretti family, after all, and his reach was almost limitless. Finding me in Spain was only a matter of time.I just hadn't expected it to be now.He strode over and grabbed my wrist. His grip was so tight that his fingers dug into my skin.I didn't fight him.Not because I didn't have the strength. I just didn't want to make a scene here. The kids were still gathered around us, wide-eyed and confused.I looked up at him, my voice tired."Let's talk outside."I'd barely turned when Lorenzo stepped in front of me.He frowned, his gaze dropping to Vincenz
