Chapter 2

작가: Roewan
"Girlfriend," I murmured. My heart was aching.

I had a crush on Zac for two years. Finally, during the summer of my sophomore year, I gathered enough courage to confess to him.

He smiled at me and said, "I thought you'd wait until after the college entrance exam."

I was too nervous to pick up on the undertone and answered, "I won't interfere with your studies. My parents got together when they were seniors in high school, and they've always had a really good relationship."

He reached out and ruffled my hair. "Why are you so adorable?"

My heart raced then.

That summer, Keira, who had grown up with me, transferred back from another city to take the college entrance exam.

I introduced the two of them to each other. That was when I learned that Zac had a younger sister who had died unexpectedly, and her name had also been Keira.

Keira laughed at the coincidence and said jokingly, "Does that make you my future sister-in-law?"

Gradually, the two of them became close like actual siblings. In our group of three, the two of them seemed to form an even stronger bond day by day.

Whenever Zac bought me breakfast or a gift, he would always get one for Keira too.

Keira was academically gifted and could compete with Zac for first place.

They could discuss the most difficult math problems while eating or walking, debating which solution was simpler.

They both loved soccer. They could talk about a single game until their throats were dry and argue until their faces turned red.

With perfect understanding, they would suddenly say the name of the same player at the exact same time, high-five, and burst out laughing.

I understood none of it. All I could do was silently follow behind them.

Whenever they disagreed and turned around to ask whose side I was on, I could only smile awkwardly.

"My girlfriend would obviously take my side."

Zac would come back and grab my hand.

The disappointment I'd felt would instantly disappear.

I would tell myself he liked me.

That afternoon, when I was dizzy from the heat and crouched down on the ground, I saw their hands bump against each other. Zac hooked his finger around Keira's.

It might have only lasted two seconds, but in my mind, those two seconds stretched into a two-hour movie.

The cab smelled awful. I rolled down the window and tried to endure it, but suddenly, without warning, I vomited.

I quickly apologized to the driver. "I'm sorry."

The driver suddenly turned into a side road. He got out, opened the rear door, and climbed into the backseat.

"Don't be scared. It's already dirty, so just leave it. I won't make you pay."

As he spoke, he placed his hand on my thigh.

My heart began pounding in fear. When I reached for the door, he grabbed my hand.

"Your eyes are so swollen from crying. Did you fight with your boyfriend? Tell me about it. I won't hurt you."

Five minutes later, I fell out of the cab. The car sped away.

I desperately rubbed my palm against my clothes while trying to wipe away the disgusting, sticky fluid. Overwhelmed by terror that came after narrowly escaping danger, I kept gagging uncontrollably as tears streamed down my face.

Feeling alone and helpless, the first person I instinctively thought of was still Zac.

Thankfully, he answered the phone quickly.

"Zac, can you come pick me up? I'm really scared–"

He was silent for several seconds. He sounded disappointed when he spoke.

"Jocelyn, when did you become like this? You're even making up lies like this now.

"What do you want me to do? Leave Keira alone at the hospital and come find you? Is that how I'm supposed to prove that I love you?

"That's childish and disgusting."

It felt like someone had poured a bucket of cold water over my head. The pain was bone-deep.

My phone automatically shut down, and the screen turned black.

I clenched my jaw, wiped away my tears, and stood up.

With my ankle twisted, I limped toward the main road and borrowed a phone from the owner of a restaurant to call the police.

"I came here alone for a trip. I don't have any companions.

"There's nothing valuable in my suitcase. Just clothes."

That suitcase was the most expensive thing I owned. Zac had given it to me. My initials were engraved on the handle.

I had thought it was a matching couple's suitcase, and I had been so happy.

But at the airport, I saw Keira pulling one that was identical.

Losing it was probably for the best.

  • Once Our Love Shone No More   Chapter 8

After college started, I found out my roommates and classmates were all very kind.I sent Irene messages about everything that happened every day.I often dreamed that she was replying to my messages from another world while frantically asking me why I couldn't see them. There was a woman at Annex Cafeteria who sold casseroles. Her silhouette often reminded me of Irene.I ate there for an entire week. The woman eventually remembered my face.Whenever it wasn't too busy, she'd chat with me."Jocelyn, will you have the usual today?"I nodded. She retrieved a chocolate bar from her pocket and sneakily handed it to me."I won it in a bet. I don't like sweet stuff. You can have it."My eyes instantly welled up with tears.I couldn't even get the words 'thank you' out properly. The woman noticed and nervously asked whether someone had mistreated me or whether I was homesick.I nodded. "I miss my mom."She ruffled my hair and silently comforted me.Halfway through my meal, I r

I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep, but after lying down in Irene's bed and hugging her pillow, I soon felt drowsy. My eyelids grew heavier and heavier. When I opened my eyes again, it was already completely dark. For the first time in so many days, I had slept soundly. My body felt much better.I turned over, and suddenly my tears came pouring out.For the first time, I truly cried."Mom, I'm so scared."It was just like when I was little. Whenever I woke up and couldn't find Irene, I'd sit on the bed and cry hysterically.Back then, my dad and mom would hear me and rush in before taking me into their arms and comforting me.Now, no matter how loudly I cried, they couldn't hear me anymore.Even if they could, they couldn't hold me anymore.I cried until I became lightheaded, and my ears started ringing. I wanted to get up and wash my face, but I fell asleep again. When I next woke up, I was already lying in a hospital bed.My eyes were dry and sore. It felt horrible.M

The day after Irene's funeral, Zac and Keira's college acceptance letters arrived. They had both been accepted to Aberton College.Keira deliberately came to my house to show hers to me."Jocelyn, the things Zac said at the hospital were just to comfort you because you were so devastated."We'll be at the same college and in the same major. We'll spend so much time together. He likes me too. We're definitely going to end up together."I sneered."If you're so confident, why did you go to such lengths to frame me? You were willing to hurt yourself just to hurt me."She shrugged."I don't think I lost anything. Let people say whatever they want. Who's going to remember it a month or a year from now?"So what if everyone thinks I was the other woman and had an abortion? As long as Zac feels sorry for me, that's all that matters."I asked her, "Why do you hate me so much? Was our friendship of more than ten years all fake?"She gently rubbed her acceptance letter."Because you'

"I'm sorry. I never thought things would turn out like this–"I simply stared at him.I didn't think they would act so quickly. They were so evil.Life was fragile. Why did such an unlikely tragedy have to happen to Irene? She hadn't even seen my college acceptance letter yet.I hated them, but I hated myself even more. Why had I fallen in love with Zac? Why had I confessed to him?Just as he had asked me, I now asked myself, 'Why did I cause such a scene? I'd already endured for so long. Why did I hesitate for so long at home?'-Those regrets gnawed at my heart."Jocelyn, I'm sorry."Zac carefully wrapped his trembling arms around me. He held me as he repeated those words over and over."I'm sorry. I'm sorry–"I saw Keira step out of the elevator.Suppressing my disgust and hatred, I raised my arms and hugged Zac back before slowly tightening my grip.He felt it immediately and hugged me even tighter."Jocelyn, please just cry. Let it out."I looked at Keira and sa

Keira grabbed my hand anxiously."It's my fault. I didn't know how to respect boundaries. From now on, I won't join you when you're on dates, and I definitely won't meet Zac alone."She looked deeply wronged. Her eyes welled up with tears."We've been friends since we were seven. We're like family. I really don't want to lose you."At that moment, I felt even more disgusted than I had in the cab. There was a crudely made silver ring on her finger. She had posted a photo of herself on Instagram wearing the ring while holding Zac's hand. Their fingers were intertwined. There was a caption below the photo.[I asked him what he was thinking about when he had the ring made. He didn't say anything when he looked at me, but I already knew the answer.]I smiled sarcastically before shaking her hand off."Stop pretending."Her expression turned horrid. Zac frowned too."Jocelyn."Right then, his phone rang."Zac, Jocelyn sent me a long post and asked me to put it on the school con

Two days later, I returned home alone. The moment I saw my mom, all the grievances I had been holding back came rushing out, and I burst into tears."Mom, I don't want to go to Berunia for college anymore."The three of us had discussed our college applications together, and almost all of our choices were colleges in Berunia. It had once been the place I dreamed of going to, the place that constantly motivated me to work toward my goals. But just like Zac, that place had gradually faded from my heart.Even so, it was too late. I could no longer change my applications.Mom hugged me and gently rubbed my back."Okay. I will support your decision no matter where you choose to go."The next morning, Mom left me some breakfast before heading out to her food truck.I was soaking my hands in disinfectant and scrubbing them hard with a steel wool pad when I heard someone knocking on the door.It was Zac."Why haven't you been answering my calls or replying to my messages?
