Chapter 3

작가: Roewan
Two days later, I returned home alone.

The moment I saw my mom, all the grievances I had been holding back came rushing out, and I burst into tears.

"Mom, I don't want to go to Berunia for college anymore."

The three of us had discussed our college applications together, and almost all of our choices were colleges in Berunia.

It had once been the place I dreamed of going to, the place that constantly motivated me to work toward my goals.

But just like Zac, that place had gradually faded from my heart.

Even so, it was too late. I could no longer change my applications.

Mom hugged me and gently rubbed my back.

"Okay. I will support your decision no matter where you choose to go."

The next morning, Mom left me some breakfast before heading out to her food truck.

I was soaking my hands in disinfectant and scrubbing them hard with a steel wool pad when I heard someone knocking on the door.

It was Zac.

"Why haven't you been answering my calls or replying to my messages? You could've at least told me you were safe."

He sounded angry and helpless, but halfway through his sentence, he glanced at the flowers in his hand. It was as if he suddenly recalled that he had come to apologize.

"I'm sorry. I was wrong. Don't be upset anymore, okay?

"From now on, our trips will just be the two of us. Keira won't come with us again."

I didn't respond. He awkwardly placed the flowers on the cabinet and retrieved a cloth bag.

"Keira spent the entire day making this silver bracelet for you by hand. She was on her period and in so much pain that her lips turned pale. She even hit her fingernail with the hammer and bruised it.

"You can take your anger out on me, but don't take it out on her. She was worried about you. She felt guilty and blamed herself. She even cried until her eyes were swollen."

I closed my dry, aching eyes. I felt the urge to ask him whether he was blind to the truth or simply chose to ignore it.

His apology was perfunctory and insincere, yet whenever it came to Keira, his concern was as genuine as ever.

I recalled one time when I didn't know Keira was on her period and handed her a bottle of ice-cold soda.

The moment I offered it to her, Zac reached out and took it from me. Without saying a word, he turned around, walked into the store, and exchanged it for a room-temperature one.

Keira smiled gratefully. She then continued chatting with me as if nothing had happened.

I rubbed my fingers, which were still numb from the ice-cold soda, and felt a dull ache in my chest.

It was only a minor thing, but I couldn't ask about it or make an issue of it. It felt like the moment I said something, everything would change.

It was just like how Zac had suddenly developed the habit of keeping painkillers in his backpack. He did it even on the day of the college entrance exam.

Keira's periods were irregular, and her period cramps were especially severe, so she had to take painkillers.

I had seen Zac secretly practicing his handwriting with his left hand during evening study sessions because Keira was left-handed.

I saw the same sentence written over and over on a discarded sheet of Keira's scratch paper.

[Sometimes, the order in which people enter your life really does matter.]

-

Those subtle, indescribable moments flashed through my mind one after another.

I looked at Zac's increasingly irritated expression. I took the bracelet, grabbed the flowers, and tossed both into the garbage bin.

I then tied up the garbage bag, handed it to him, and told him to leave.

"Take this downstairs for me. Thanks."

He raised his hand and braced it against the doorframe.

"I already apologized. What else do you want from me? Just tell me. I can't read your mind, and I hate meaningless arguments and silent treatment."

"Oh, right. I forgot."

His words reminded me of something.

"Zac, let's break up. You don't have to guess what I'm thinking, apologize to me, or force yourself to comfort me anymore," I said coldly.

His eyes widened in disbelief, but his voice was barely above a whisper.

"What did you say?"

In our relationship, he was the brilliant, dazzling one, while I had always been the one who lowered my stance and tried to please him. I'd always been the one who invested more emotionally.

Naturally, he assumed that whenever I acted up, I was simply jealous and trying to make him care about me more.

Breaking up was something I could never and should never be the one to bring up.

"Jocelyn! You can't break up with him!"

At that moment, Keira ran up the stairs from the floor below.

  • Once Our Love Shone No More   Chapter 8

After college started, I found out my roommates and classmates were all very kind.I sent Irene messages about everything that happened every day.I often dreamed that she was replying to my messages from another world while frantically asking me why I couldn't see them. There was a woman at Annex Cafeteria who sold casseroles. Her silhouette often reminded me of Irene.I ate there for an entire week. The woman eventually remembered my face.Whenever it wasn't too busy, she'd chat with me."Jocelyn, will you have the usual today?"I nodded. She retrieved a chocolate bar from her pocket and sneakily handed it to me."I won it in a bet. I don't like sweet stuff. You can have it."My eyes instantly welled up with tears.I couldn't even get the words 'thank you' out properly. The woman noticed and nervously asked whether someone had mistreated me or whether I was homesick.I nodded. "I miss my mom."She ruffled my hair and silently comforted me.Halfway through my meal, I r

I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep, but after lying down in Irene's bed and hugging her pillow, I soon felt drowsy. My eyelids grew heavier and heavier. When I opened my eyes again, it was already completely dark. For the first time in so many days, I had slept soundly. My body felt much better.I turned over, and suddenly my tears came pouring out.For the first time, I truly cried."Mom, I'm so scared."It was just like when I was little. Whenever I woke up and couldn't find Irene, I'd sit on the bed and cry hysterically.Back then, my dad and mom would hear me and rush in before taking me into their arms and comforting me.Now, no matter how loudly I cried, they couldn't hear me anymore.Even if they could, they couldn't hold me anymore.I cried until I became lightheaded, and my ears started ringing. I wanted to get up and wash my face, but I fell asleep again. When I next woke up, I was already lying in a hospital bed.My eyes were dry and sore. It felt horrible.M

The day after Irene's funeral, Zac and Keira's college acceptance letters arrived. They had both been accepted to Aberton College.Keira deliberately came to my house to show hers to me."Jocelyn, the things Zac said at the hospital were just to comfort you because you were so devastated."We'll be at the same college and in the same major. We'll spend so much time together. He likes me too. We're definitely going to end up together."I sneered."If you're so confident, why did you go to such lengths to frame me? You were willing to hurt yourself just to hurt me."She shrugged."I don't think I lost anything. Let people say whatever they want. Who's going to remember it a month or a year from now?"So what if everyone thinks I was the other woman and had an abortion? As long as Zac feels sorry for me, that's all that matters."I asked her, "Why do you hate me so much? Was our friendship of more than ten years all fake?"She gently rubbed her acceptance letter."Because you'

"I'm sorry. I never thought things would turn out like this–"I simply stared at him.I didn't think they would act so quickly. They were so evil.Life was fragile. Why did such an unlikely tragedy have to happen to Irene? She hadn't even seen my college acceptance letter yet.I hated them, but I hated myself even more. Why had I fallen in love with Zac? Why had I confessed to him?Just as he had asked me, I now asked myself, 'Why did I cause such a scene? I'd already endured for so long. Why did I hesitate for so long at home?'-Those regrets gnawed at my heart."Jocelyn, I'm sorry."Zac carefully wrapped his trembling arms around me. He held me as he repeated those words over and over."I'm sorry. I'm sorry–"I saw Keira step out of the elevator.Suppressing my disgust and hatred, I raised my arms and hugged Zac back before slowly tightening my grip.He felt it immediately and hugged me even tighter."Jocelyn, please just cry. Let it out."I looked at Keira and sa

Keira grabbed my hand anxiously."It's my fault. I didn't know how to respect boundaries. From now on, I won't join you when you're on dates, and I definitely won't meet Zac alone."She looked deeply wronged. Her eyes welled up with tears."We've been friends since we were seven. We're like family. I really don't want to lose you."At that moment, I felt even more disgusted than I had in the cab. There was a crudely made silver ring on her finger. She had posted a photo of herself on Instagram wearing the ring while holding Zac's hand. Their fingers were intertwined. There was a caption below the photo.[I asked him what he was thinking about when he had the ring made. He didn't say anything when he looked at me, but I already knew the answer.]I smiled sarcastically before shaking her hand off."Stop pretending."Her expression turned horrid. Zac frowned too."Jocelyn."Right then, his phone rang."Zac, Jocelyn sent me a long post and asked me to put it on the school con
