Chapter 4

Keira grabbed my hand anxiously.

"It's my fault. I didn't know how to respect boundaries. From now on, I won't join you when you're on dates, and I definitely won't meet Zac alone."

She looked deeply wronged. Her eyes welled up with tears.

"We've been friends since we were seven. We're like family. I really don't want to lose you."

At that moment, I felt even more disgusted than I had in the cab.

There was a crudely made silver ring on her finger.

She had posted a photo of herself on Instagram wearing the ring while holding Zac's hand. Their fingers were intertwined.

There was a caption below the photo.

[I asked him what he was thinking about when he had the ring made. He didn't say anything when he looked at me, but I already knew the answer.]

I smiled sarcastically before shaking her hand off.

"Stop pretending."

Her expression turned horrid. Zac frowned too.

"Jocelyn."

Right then, his phone rang.

"Zac, Jocelyn sent me a long post and asked me to put it on the school confession page as soon as possible. I don't think that's a good idea. I sent it to you on Telegram. Take a look."

I froze.

After reading it, Zac angrily shoved his phone screen in front of my face.

"Is your brain filled with nothing but filthy thoughts? First you made up a story about being sexually harassed, and now you're spreading sexual rumors about Keira. Have you lost all sense of decency just because you're jealous?"

The long post was allegedly me accusing Keira of being the other woman who had broken up my relationship. It claimed the two of them had slept together long ago, and Keira had gotten an abortion after the college entrance exam.

There was a photo of her sitting in a hospital hallway below it.

Keira looked shocked and hurt. Her voice was trembling.

"Jocelyn, do you really hate me this much?"

I laughed so hard I doubled over.

"Keira, that's a question I should be asking you. You should become an actress. Otherwise, it would be a waste of your talent."

Zac looked at me as if I were crazy. His eyes were filled with anger, disappointment, and disgust. Finally, he warned in a harsh tone, "Jocelyn, three strikes and you're out. If you still want your mom's business to continue running properly, don't pull these disgusting tricks again."

It felt like someone had grabbed me by the throat.

My dad had fallen ill and died when I was in middle school. My mom Irene had supported our family with a small food truck that was only a few dozen square feet in size. At the same time, she was also paying off the debts from my dad's medical treatment.

Zac's father was powerful and influential.

Once, Irene's food truck had even been confiscated. She had to pay a 500-dollar fine to get it back.

He was using Irene to threaten me. I had no way to fight back.

Perhaps satisfied with my reaction, he reached for Keira's hand and left with her.

"Jocelyn, Zac and I really don't have anything going on–"

Keira turned around to look at me. She kept up the act until the very last second. There was a barely noticeable smile on her face.

At noon, the long post was published on the confession page of our neighboring high school. It was quickly decoded and circulated back to our school.

People in our class started criticizing Keira and sympathizing with me.

The more I read, the more panicked I became. I couldn't sit still. I dug my fingernails into my palm until it started bleeding.

Neither Zac nor Keira answered my calls.

I got changed and went to find Zac. I had to explain everything to him.

It didn't matter if he misunderstood me. I couldn't let him hurt my mom.

On my way there, I received a call. My heart stopped beating for a second.

"Jocelyn, listen to me first. Don't panic–"

It was the woman who ran another food truck next to Irene.

"A woman came looking for trouble. She claimed she found a hair in the food your mom was selling, and that the sausages had gone sour. She even brought a bunch of reporters with her.

"Your mom was pushed and fell. She hit her head on the corner of the steel table–"

I rushed to the hospital as fast as I could.

My heart was beating so fast I could hear it. When I heard the words 'we couldn't save her,' the entire world suddenly fell silent.

"Jocelyn–"

The pain in my chest became unbearable, and everything went black.

In the haze, a familiar but blurry figure walked quickly toward me.

When I finally recognized the person standing in front of me, my heart immediately clenched.

  • Once Our Love Shone No More   Chapter 8

After college started, I found out my roommates and classmates were all very kind.I sent Irene messages about everything that happened every day.I often dreamed that she was replying to my messages from another world while frantically asking me why I couldn't see them. There was a woman at Annex Cafeteria who sold casseroles. Her silhouette often reminded me of Irene.I ate there for an entire week. The woman eventually remembered my face.Whenever it wasn't too busy, she'd chat with me."Jocelyn, will you have the usual today?"I nodded. She retrieved a chocolate bar from her pocket and sneakily handed it to me."I won it in a bet. I don't like sweet stuff. You can have it."My eyes instantly welled up with tears.I couldn't even get the words 'thank you' out properly. The woman noticed and nervously asked whether someone had mistreated me or whether I was homesick.I nodded. "I miss my mom."She ruffled my hair and silently comforted me.Halfway through my meal, I r

I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep, but after lying down in Irene's bed and hugging her pillow, I soon felt drowsy. My eyelids grew heavier and heavier. When I opened my eyes again, it was already completely dark. For the first time in so many days, I had slept soundly. My body felt much better.I turned over, and suddenly my tears came pouring out.For the first time, I truly cried."Mom, I'm so scared."It was just like when I was little. Whenever I woke up and couldn't find Irene, I'd sit on the bed and cry hysterically.Back then, my dad and mom would hear me and rush in before taking me into their arms and comforting me.Now, no matter how loudly I cried, they couldn't hear me anymore.Even if they could, they couldn't hold me anymore.I cried until I became lightheaded, and my ears started ringing. I wanted to get up and wash my face, but I fell asleep again. When I next woke up, I was already lying in a hospital bed.My eyes were dry and sore. It felt horrible.M

The day after Irene's funeral, Zac and Keira's college acceptance letters arrived. They had both been accepted to Aberton College.Keira deliberately came to my house to show hers to me."Jocelyn, the things Zac said at the hospital were just to comfort you because you were so devastated."We'll be at the same college and in the same major. We'll spend so much time together. He likes me too. We're definitely going to end up together."I sneered."If you're so confident, why did you go to such lengths to frame me? You were willing to hurt yourself just to hurt me."She shrugged."I don't think I lost anything. Let people say whatever they want. Who's going to remember it a month or a year from now?"So what if everyone thinks I was the other woman and had an abortion? As long as Zac feels sorry for me, that's all that matters."I asked her, "Why do you hate me so much? Was our friendship of more than ten years all fake?"She gently rubbed her acceptance letter."Because you'

"I'm sorry. I never thought things would turn out like this–"I simply stared at him.I didn't think they would act so quickly. They were so evil.Life was fragile. Why did such an unlikely tragedy have to happen to Irene? She hadn't even seen my college acceptance letter yet.I hated them, but I hated myself even more. Why had I fallen in love with Zac? Why had I confessed to him?Just as he had asked me, I now asked myself, 'Why did I cause such a scene? I'd already endured for so long. Why did I hesitate for so long at home?'-Those regrets gnawed at my heart."Jocelyn, I'm sorry."Zac carefully wrapped his trembling arms around me. He held me as he repeated those words over and over."I'm sorry. I'm sorry–"I saw Keira step out of the elevator.Suppressing my disgust and hatred, I raised my arms and hugged Zac back before slowly tightening my grip.He felt it immediately and hugged me even tighter."Jocelyn, please just cry. Let it out."I looked at Keira and sa

Two days later, I returned home alone. The moment I saw my mom, all the grievances I had been holding back came rushing out, and I burst into tears."Mom, I don't want to go to Berunia for college anymore."The three of us had discussed our college applications together, and almost all of our choices were colleges in Berunia. It had once been the place I dreamed of going to, the place that constantly motivated me to work toward my goals. But just like Zac, that place had gradually faded from my heart.Even so, it was too late. I could no longer change my applications.Mom hugged me and gently rubbed my back."Okay. I will support your decision no matter where you choose to go."The next morning, Mom left me some breakfast before heading out to her food truck.I was soaking my hands in disinfectant and scrubbing them hard with a steel wool pad when I heard someone knocking on the door.It was Zac."Why haven't you been answering my calls or replying to my messages?
